Kondo effect and continuous quantum phase transitions in double quantum dots with on-site and interdot repulsion and magnetic field

Abstract

By means of the numerical renormalization group method, I study the Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions in a double quantum dot system with on-site repulsion $U$, interdot repulsion $V,$ and magnetic field $B$. At zero temperature and $B=0$, there is a local spin triplet-singlet transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type when $V$ increases to a critical value ${V}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}U$. With increasing $B$, a singlet-triplet transition of the second order occurs at a critical magnetic field ${B}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}V\ensuremath{-}U$. The magnetic susceptibility and the first derivatives of the spin correlation and double occupation are expected to diverge at ${B}_{c}$ and to have different critical exponents, which are universal for different parameters. An appropriate magnetic field can restore the Kondo effect.

Renormalization group study of capacitively coupled double quantum dots

Martin R Galpin, David E Logan, H R Krishnamurthy

The numerical renormalization group is employed to study a double quantum (DQD) dot system consisting of two equivalent single-level dots, each coupled to its own lead and with a mutual capacitive coupling embodied in an interdot interaction U', in addition to the intradot Coulomb interaction U. We focus on the regime with two electrons on the DQD, and the evolution of the system on increasing U'/U. The spin-Kondo effect arising for U'=0 (SU(2) x SU(2)) is found to persist robustly with increasing U'/U, before a rapid but continuous crossover to (a) the SU(4) point U'=U where charge and spin degrees of freedom are entangled and the Kondo scale strongly enhanced; and then (b) a charge-Kondo state, in which a charge-pseudospin is quenched on coupling to the leads/conduction channels. A quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type then occurs from this Fermi liquid, strong coupling (SC) phase, to a broken symmetry, non-Fermi liquid charge ordered (CO) phase at a critical U'_c. Our emphasis in this paper is on the structure, stability and flows between the underlying RG fixed points, on the overall phase diagram in the (U,U')-plane and evolution of the characteristic low-energy Kondo scale inherent to the SC phase; and on static physical properties such as spin- and charge-susceptibilities (staggered and uniform), including universality and scaling behaviour in the strongly correlated regime. Some exact results for associated Wilson ratios are also obtained.

Renormalization group study of capacitively coupled double quantum dots

Abstract. The numerical renormalization group is employed to study a double quantum (DQD) dot system consisting of two equivalent single-level dots, each coupled to its own lead and with a mutual capacitive coupling embodied in an interdot interaction U ′, in addition to the intradot Coulomb interaction U. We focus on the regime with two electrons on the DQD, and the evolution of the system on increasing U ′/U. The spin-Kondo effect arising for U ′ = 0 (SU(2) × SU(2)) is found to persist robustly with increasing U ′/U, before a rapid but continuous crossover to (a) the SU(4) point U ′ = U where charge and spin degrees of freedom are entangled and the Kondo scale strongly enhanced; and then (b) a charge-Kondo state, in which a charge-pseudospin is quenched on coupling to the leads/conduction channels. A quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type then occurs from this Fermi liquid, strong coupling (SC) phase, to a broken symmetry, non-Fermi liquid charge ordered (CO) phase at a critical U ′ c. Our emphasis in this paper is on the structure, stability and flows between the underlying RG fixed points, on the overall phase diagram in the (U, U ′)-plane and evolution of the characteristic low-energy Kondo scale inherent to the SC phase; and on static physical properties such as spin- and charge-susceptibilities (staggered and uniform), including universality and scaling behaviour in the strongly correlated regime. Quantum phase transition and underscreened Kondo effect in electron transport through parallel double quantum dots

Guo-Hui Ding, Fei Ye, Bing Dong

We investigate electronic transport through a parallel double quantum dot (DQD) system with strong on-site Coulomb interaction and capacitive interdot coupling. By applying the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method, the ground state of the system and the transmission probability at zero temperature have been obtained. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels and small interdot tunnel coupling, the spin correlations between the DQDs is ferromagnetic and the ground state of the system is a spin-1 triplet state. The linear conductance will reach the unitary limit (2e(2)/h) due to the underscreened Kondo effect at low temperature. As the interdot tunnel coupling increases, there is a quantum phase transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic spin correlation in DQDs and the linear conductance is strongly suppressed.

Quantum Phase Transition and Ferromagnetic Spin Correlation in Parallel Double Quantum Dots

We investigate electronic transport through a parallel double quantum dot (DQD) system with strong on-site Coulomb interaction, as well as the interdot tunnelling. By applying numerical renormalization group method, the ground state of the system and the transmission probability at zero temperature are obtained. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels and small interdot tunnel coupling, the spin correlations between the DQDs is ferromagnetic, and the ground state of the system is a spin-1 triplet state. Zero-Field Kondo Splitting and Quantum-Critical Transition in Double Quantum Dots

Luis G. G. V. Dias da Silva, Nancy Sandler, Kevin Ingersent +1 more

Double quantum dots offer unique possibilities for the study of many-body correlations. A system containing one Kondo dot and one effectively noninteracting dot maps onto a single-impurity Anderson model with a structured (nonconstant) density of states. Numerical renormalization-group calculations show that, while band filtering through the resonant dot splits the Kondo resonance, the singlet ground state is robust. The system can also be continuously tuned to create a pseudogapped density of states and access a quantum-critical point separating Kondo and non-Kondo phases.

Quantum Phase Transition in Capacitively Coupled Double Quantum Dots

Martin R. Galpin, David E. Logan, H. R. Krishnamurthy

We investigate two equivalent, capacitively coupled semiconducting quantum dots, each coupled to its own lead, in a regime where there are two electrons on the double dot. With increasing interdot coupling, a rich range of behavior is uncovered: first a crossover from spin- to charge-Kondo physics, via an intermediate SU(4) state with entangled spin and charge degrees of freedom, followed by a quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type to a non-Fermi-liquid "charge-ordered" phase with finite residual entropy and anomalous transport properties. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization group methods are employed to obtain a detailed understanding of the problem.

By means of the numerical renormalization group method, I study the Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions in a double quantum dot system with on-site repulsion UUU, interdot repulsion V,V,V, and magnetic field BBB. At zero temperature and B=0B=0B=0, there is a local spin triplet-singlet transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type when VVV increases to a critical value Vc\ensuremath≈U{V}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}UVc\ensuremath≈U. The magnetic susceptibility and the first derivatives of the spin correlation and double occupation are expected to diverge at Bc{B}_{c}Bc and to have different critical exponents, which are universal for different parameters.
