Abstract

We investigate the quantum phases of mixed-dimensional cold atom mixtures. In particular, we consider a mixture of a Fermi gas in a two-dimensional lattice, interacting with a bulk Fermi gas or a Bose-Einstein condensate in a three-dimensional lattice. The effective interaction of the two-dimensional system mediated by the bulk system is determined. We perform a functional renormalization group analysis, and demonstrate that by tuning the properties of the bulk system, a subtle competition of several superconducting orders can be controlled among $s\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}, p\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}, {d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$, and ${g}_{xy({x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2})}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$ pairing symmetries. Other instabilities such as a charge-density-wave order are also demonstrated to occur. In particular, we find that the critical temperature of the $d\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$ pairing induced by the next-nearest-neighbor interactions can be an order of magnitude larger than that of the same pairing induced by doping in the simple Hubbard model. We expect that by combining the nearest-neighbor interaction with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping (known to enhance $d\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$ pairing), an even higher critical temperature may be achieved.

Mean-field phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Hubbard model

Marin Bukov, Lode Pollet

We analyze the ground-state properties of mixtures consisting of scalar bosons and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions using a mean-field treatment of the local boson-fermion interaction on a simple cubic lattice. In the deep superfluid limit of the boson sector and the BCS regime of the fermion sector, we derive BCS-type equations to determine the phase diagram of the system. We find a competition between a charge density wave and a superconducting phase. In the opposite limit, we study the Mott-insulator-to-superfluid transition of the boson sector in the presence of a staggered density-induced alternating potential provided by the fermions, and determine the mean-field transition line. In the two-superfluids phase of the mixture, we restrict to nearest-neighbor-induced interactions between the fermions and consider the extended Hubbard model. We perform a mean-field analysis of the critical temperature for the formation of boson-assisted $s$-, extended ${s}^{\ensuremath{-}}$-, $d$-, and $p$-wave pairs at fermionic half-filling. We compare our results with a recent dynamical mean-field study [P. Anders et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 206401 (2012)].

Pairing and Density-Wave Phases in Boson-Fermion Mixtures at Fixed Filling

F. D. Klironomos, Shan-Wen Tsai

We study a mixture of fermionic and bosonic cold atoms on a two-dimensional optical lattice, where the fermions are prepared in two isospin states and the bosons have Bose-Einstein condensed. Number density fluctuations of the condensate form delocalized bosonic modes which couple to the fermionic atoms similarly to the electron-phonon coupling in crystals. We study the phase diagram for this system at fixed fermion density of one per site. We find that tuning of the lattice parameters and interaction strengths drives the system to undergo antiferromagnetic ordering, s-wave and d-wave pairing superconductivity, or a charge density-wave phase. We use functional renormalization group analysis where retardation effects are fully taken into account. We calculate response functions and also provide estimates of the energy gap associated with the dominant order, and how it depends on different parameters of the problem.

Competing Types of Order in Two-Dimensional Bose-Fermi Mixtures

Ludwig Mathey, Shan-Wen Tsai, A. H. Castro Neto

Using a functional renormalization group approach we study the zero temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold atoms in optical lattices, in the limit when the velocity of bosonic condensate fluctuations is much larger than the Fermi velocity. For spin-1/2 fermions we obtain a phase diagram, which shows a competition of pairing phases of various orbital symmetry (s, p, and d) and antiferromagnetic order. We determine the value of the gaps of various phases close to half filling, and identify subdominant orders as well as short-range fluctuations from the renormalization group flow. For spinless fermions we find that p-wave pairing dominates the phase diagram.

Weak three-dimensional mediators of two-dimensional triplet pairing

Shane P. Kelly, Shan-Wen Tsai

Recent experiments demonstrate the ability to construct cold-atom mixtures with species-selective optical lattices. This allows for the possibility of a mixed-dimension system, where one fermionic atomic species is confined to a two-dimensional lattice, while another species is confined to a three-dimensional lattice that contains the two-dimensional one. We show that by tuning the density of an arbitrary number of three-dimensional atomic species, we can engineer an arbitrary, rotationally symmetric, density-density, effective interaction for the two-dimensional particles. This possibility allows for an effective interaction that favors triplet pairing for two-dimensional, $\text{SU}(2)$ symmetric particles. Using a functional renormalization-group analysis for the two-dimensional particles, we derive and numerically confirm that the critical temperature for triplet pairing depends exponentially on the effective interaction strength. We then analyze how the stability of this phase is affected by the particle densities and the fine tuning of interaction parameters. We conclude by briefly discussing experimental considerations and the potential to study triplet-pairing physics, including Majorana fermions and spin textures, with cold atoms on optical lattices.

Possible quantum phase manipulation of a two-leg ladder in mixed-dimensional fermionic cold atoms

Wen-Min Huang, Kyle Irwin, Shan-Wen Tsai

The recent realization of mixed-dimensional systems of cold atoms has attracted much attention from both experimentalists and theorists. In this article we investigate a two-species Fermi atom mixture: one species of atom exists in two hyperfine states and is confined to move in a two-leg ladder, interacting with an on-site interaction, and the other moves freely in a two-dimensional square lattice that contains the two-leg ladder. The two species of atoms interact via an on-site interaction on the ladder. In the limit of weak interspecies interactions, the two-dimensional gas can be integrated out, leading to an effective long-range mediated interaction in the ladder, generated by the on-site interspecies interaction. We show that the form of the mediated interaction can be controlled by the density of the two-dimensional gas and that it enhances the charge-density wave instability in the two-leg ladder after the renormalization-group transformation. Parametrizing the phase diagram with various experimentally controllable quantities, we discuss the possible tuning of the macroscopic quantum many-body phases of the two-leg ladder in this mixed-dimensional fermionic cold atom system.

Insulator phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures induced by intraspecies next-neighbor interactions

Felipe Gómez-Lozada, Roberto Franco Peñaloza, Jereson Silva-Valencia

We study a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons at the hardcore limit, focusing on the effect that the intraspecies next-neighbor interactions have on the zero-temperature ground state of the system for different fillings of each carrier. Exploring the problem’s parameters, we observed that the nearest-neighbor interaction could favor or harm the well-known mixed Mott and spin-selective Mott insulators. We also found the emergence of three unusual insulating states with charge density wave (CDW) structures in which the orders of the carriers are out of phase between each other. For instance, the immiscible CDW appears only at half-filling bosonic density, whereas the mixed CDW state is characterized by equal densities of bosons and fermions. Finally, the spin-selective CDW couples the bosons and only one kind of fermions. Appropriate order parameters were proposed for each phase to obtain the critical parameters for the corresponding superfluid-insulator transition. Our results can inspire or contribute to understanding experiments in cold-atom setups with long-range interactions or recent reports involving quasiparticles in semiconductor heterostructures.
