Abstract

The recent realization of mixed-dimensional systems of cold atoms has attracted much attention from both experimentalists and theorists. In this article we investigate a two-species Fermi atom mixture: one species of atom exists in two hyperfine states and is confined to move in a two-leg ladder, interacting with an on-site interaction, and the other moves freely in a two-dimensional square lattice that contains the two-leg ladder. The two species of atoms interact via an on-site interaction on the ladder. In the limit of weak interspecies interactions, the two-dimensional gas can be integrated out, leading to an effective long-range mediated interaction in the ladder, generated by the on-site interspecies interaction. We show that the form of the mediated interaction can be controlled by the density of the two-dimensional gas and that it enhances the charge-density wave instability in the two-leg ladder after the renormalization-group transformation. Parametrizing the phase diagram with various experimentally controllable quantities, we discuss the possible tuning of the macroscopic quantum many-body phases of the two-leg ladder in this mixed-dimensional fermionic cold atom system.

Fermion pairing in mixed-dimensional atomic mixtures

Junichi Okamoto, Ludwig Mathey, Wen-Min Huang

We investigate the quantum phases of mixed-dimensional cold atom mixtures. In particular, we consider a mixture of a Fermi gas in a two-dimensional lattice, interacting with a bulk Fermi gas or a Bose-Einstein condensate in a three-dimensional lattice. The effective interaction of the two-dimensional system mediated by the bulk system is determined. We perform a functional renormalization group analysis, and demonstrate that by tuning the properties of the bulk system, a subtle competition of several superconducting orders can be controlled among $s\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}, p\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}, {d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$, and ${g}_{xy({x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2})}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$ pairing symmetries. Other instabilities such as a charge-density-wave order are also demonstrated to occur. In particular, we find that the critical temperature of the $d\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$ pairing induced by the next-nearest-neighbor interactions can be an order of magnitude larger than that of the same pairing induced by doping in the simple Hubbard model. We expect that by combining the nearest-neighbor interaction with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping (known to enhance $d\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{wave}$ pairing), an even higher critical temperature may be achieved.

Correlated phases of population imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures on an optical lattice

Chen-Yen Lai, Chuntai Shi, Shan-Wen Tsai

We study a two-species fermion mixture with different populations on a square lattice modeled by a Hubbard Hamiltonian with onsite interspecies repulsive interaction. Such a model can be realized in a cold-atom system with fermionic atoms in two different hyperfine states loaded on an optical lattice and with tunable interspecies interaction strength via external fields. For a two-dimensional square lattice, when at least one of the fermion species is close to half-filling, the system is highly affected by lattice effects. With the majority species near half-filling and varying densities for the minority species, we find that several correlated phases emerge as the ground state, including a spin density wave state, a charge density wave state with stripe structure, and various $p$-wave BCS pairing states for both species. We study this system using a functional renormalization group method, determine its phase diagram at weak coupling, discuss the origin and characteristics of each phase, and provide estimates for the critical temperatures.

Effect of mediated interactions on a Hubbard chain in mixed-dimensional fermionic cold atoms

Junichi Okamoto, Wen-Min Huang, Kyle Irwin +2 more

This work studies a one-dimensional Fermi gas embedded in a two-dimensional noninteracting Fermi gas. The authors demonstrate that various quantum phases emerge due to the mediated interaction among the one-dimensional gas, which can be controlled by varying the density of the two-dimensional Fermi gas.

Universal Fermi Gases in Mixed Dimensions

Yusuke Nishida, Shina Tan

We investigate a two-species Fermi gas in which one species is confined in a two-dimensional plane (2D) or one-dimensional line (1D) while the other is free in the three-dimensional space (3D). We discuss the realization of such a system with the interspecies interaction tuned to resonance. When the mass ratio is in the range 0.0351<m_(2D)/m_(3D)<6.35 for the 2D-3D mixture or 0.006 46<m_(1D)/m_(3D)<2.06 for the 1D-3D mixture, the resulting system is stable against the Efimov effect and has universal properties. We calculate key quantities in the many-body phase diagram. Other possible scale-invariant systems with short-range few-body interactions are also elucidated.

Bosons with long-range interactions on two-leg ladders in artificial magnetic fields

Stefan S. Natu

Motivated by experiments exploring the physics of neutral atoms in artificial magnetic fields, we study the ground state of bosons interacting with long-range dipolar interactions on a two-leg ladder. We focus on the limit where the number of particles per site is large and the interactions are weak. Using two complementary variational approaches, we find rich physics driven by the long-range forces. Generically, long-range interactions tend to destroy the Meissner phase in favor of modulated density wave phases. For example, nearest-neighbor interactions produce an interleg charge density wave phase, where the total density remains uniform but the density on each leg of the ladder is modulating in space, out of phase with one another. Next-nearest-neighbor interactions lead to a fully modulated biased ladder phase, where all of the particles are on one leg of the ladder. This state simultaneously breaks ${Z}_{2}$ reflection symmetry and $\mathrm{U}(1)$ translation symmetry. For values of the flux near $\ensuremath{\phi}=\ensuremath{\pi}$, we find a switching effect for arbitrarily weak interactions, where the density is modulated but the chiral current changes sign on every plaquette. Arbitrarily weak attractive interactions along the rungs destroy the Meissner phase completely, in favor of a modulated density wave phase. Remarkably, varying the rung to ladder hopping produces a cascade of first-order transitions between modulated density wave states with different wave vectors, which manifests itself as discrete jumps in the chiral current. Polarizing the dipoles along the ladder direction yields a region of phase space where a stable biased ladder phase occurs even at arbitrarily weak rung hopping. We discuss the experimental consequences of our work and draw connections between our work and recent experiments on cold atoms in synthetic dimensions.

Exotic paired phases in ladders with spin-dependent hopping

Adrian E. Feiguin, Matthew P. A. Fisher

Fermions in two dimensions, when subject to anisotropic spin-dependent hopping, can potentially give rise to unusual paired states in unpolarized mixtures that can behave as non-Fermi liquids. One possibility is a fully paired state with a gap for fermion excitations in which the Cooper pairs remain uncondensed. Such a ``Cooper-pair Bose-metal'' phase would be expected to have a singular Bose surface in momentum space. As demonstrated in the context of two-dimensional bosons hopping with a frustrating ring-exchange interaction, an analogous Bose-metal phase has a set of quasi-one-dimensional descendant states when put on a ladder geometry. Here we present a density matrix renormalization group study of the attractive Hubbard model with spin-dependent hopping on a two-leg ladder geometry. In our setup, one spin species moves preferentially along the leg direction, while the other does so along the rung direction. We find compelling evidence for the existence of a novel Cooper-pair Bose-metal phase in a region of the phase diagram at intermediate coupling. We further explore the phase diagram of this model as a function of hopping anisotropy, density, and interaction strength, finding a conventional superfluid phase as well as a phase of paired Cooper pairs with $d$-wave symmetry, similar to the one found in models of hard-core bosons with ring exchange. We argue that simulating this model with cold Fermi gases on spin-dependent optical lattices is a promising direction for realizing exotic quantum states.
