Abstract

We investigate a two-species Fermi gas in which one species is confined in a two-dimensional plane (2D) or one-dimensional line (1D) while the other is free in the three-dimensional space (3D). We discuss the realization of such a system with the interspecies interaction tuned to resonance. When the mass ratio is in the range 0.0351<m_(2D)/m_(3D)<6.35 for the 2D-3D mixture or 0.006 46<m_(1D)/m_(3D)<2.06 for the 1D-3D mixture, the resulting system is stable against the Efimov effect and has universal properties. We calculate key quantities in the many-body phase diagram. Other possible scale-invariant systems with short-range few-body interactions are also elucidated.

Universal Fermi Gas with Two- and Three-Body Resonances

Yusuke Nishida, Dam Thanh Son, Shina Tan

We consider a Fermi gas with two components of different masses, with the s-wave two-body interaction tuned to unitarity. In the range of mass ratio 8.62<M/m<13.6, it is possible for a short-range interaction between heavy fermions to produce a resonance in a three-body channel. The resulting system is scale invariant and has universal properties, and is very strongly interacting. When M/m is slightly above the lower limit 8.62, the ground state energy of a 2ratio1 mixture of heavy and light fermions is less than 2% of the energy of a noninteracting gas with the same number densities. We derive exact relationships between the pressures of the unitary Fermi gases with and without three-body resonance when the mass ratio is close to the critical values of 8.62 and 13.6.

Phases of a bilayer Fermi gas

Yusuke Nishida

We investigate a two-species Fermi gas in which one species is confined in two parallel layers and interacts with the other species in the three-dimensional space by a tunable short-range interaction. Based on the controlled weak coupling analysis and the exact three-body calculation, we show that the system has a rich phase diagram in the plane of the effective scattering length and the layer separation. Resulting phases include an interlayer $s$-wave pairing, an intralayer $p$-wave pairing, a dimer Bose-Einstein condensation, and a Fermi gas of stable Efimov-like trimers. Our system provides a widely applicable scheme to induce long-range interlayer correlations in ultracold atoms.

Universal three-body bound states in mixed dimensions beyond the Efimov paradigm

Pengfei Zhang, Zhenhua Yu

The Efimov effect was first predicted for three particles interacting at an $s$-wave resonance in three dimensions. A subsequent study showed that the same effect can be realized by considering two-body and three-body interactions in mixed dimensions. In this work, we consider the three-body problem of two bosonic $A$ atoms interacting with another single $B$ atom in mixed dimensions: The $A$ atoms are confined in a space of dimension ${d}_{A}$ and the $B$ atom in a space of dimension ${d}_{B}$, and there is an interspecies $s$-wave interaction in a ${d}_{\mathrm{int}}$-codimensional space accessible to both species. We find that when the $s$-wave interaction is tuned on resonance, there emerge an infinite series of universal three-body bound states for ${{d}_{A},{d}_{B},{d}_{\mathrm{int}}}={2,2,0}$ and ${2,3,1}$. Going beyond the Efimov paradigm, the binding energies of these states follow the scaling $ln|{E}_{n}{|\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{-}s(n\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta})}^{2}/4$, with the scaling factor $s$ being unity for the former case and $\sqrt{{m}_{B}(2{m}_{A}+{m}_{B})}/({m}_{A}+{m}_{B})$ for the latter. We discuss the possibility of realizing our mixed-dimensional systems in a cold-atom experiment and how the effects of these universal three-body bound states may be detected.

Bound States in a Quasi-Two-Dimensional Fermi Gas

Jesper Levinsen, Meera M. Parish

We consider the problem of $N$ identical fermions of mass ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}$ and one distinguishable particle of mass ${m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$ interacting via short-range interactions in a confined quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) geometry. For $N=2$ and mass ratios ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}/{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<13.6$, we find non-Efimov trimers that smoothly evolve from 2D to 3D. In the limit of strong 2D confinement, we show that the energy of the $N+1$ system can be approximated by an effective two-channel model. We use this approximation to solve the $3+1$ problem and we find that a bound tetramer can exist for mass ratios ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}/{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$ as low as 5 for strong confinement, thus providing the first example of a universal, non-Efimov tetramer involving three identical fermions.

Scaling and universality in two dimensions: three-body bound states with short-ranged interactions

F F Bellotti, T. Frederico, M T Yamashita +3 more

The momentum space zero-range model is used to investigate universal properties of three interacting particles confined to two dimensions. The pertinent equations are first formulated for a system of two identical and one distinct particle and the two different two-body subsystems are characterized by two-body energies and masses. The three-body energy in units of one of the two-body energies is a universal function of the other two-body energy and the mass ratio. We derive convenient analytical formulae for calculations of the three-body energy as a function of these two independent parameters and exhibit the results as universal curves. In particular, we show that the three-body system can have any number of stable bound states. When the mass ratio of the distinct to identical particles is greater than 0.22, we find that at most two stable bound states exist, while for two heavy and one light mass an increasing number of bound states is possible. The specific number of stable bound states depends on the ratio of two-body bound state energies and on the mass ratio, and we map out an energy–mass phase diagram of the number of stable bound states. Realizable systems of both fermions and bosons are discussed in this framework.

Confinement-induced Efimov resonances in Fermi-Fermi mixtures

Yusuke Nishida, Shina Tan

A Fermi-Fermi mixture of $^{40}\text{K}$ and $^{6}\text{L}\text{i}$ does not exhibit the Efimov effect in a free space, but the Efimov effect can be induced by confining only $^{40}\text{K}$ in one dimension. Here the Efimov's three-body parameter is controlled by the confinement length. We show that the three-body recombination rate in such a system in the dilute limit has a characteristic logarithmic-periodic dependence on the effective scattering length with the scaling factor 22.0 and can be expressed by formulas similar to those for identical bosons in three dimensions. The ultracold mixture of $^{40}\text{K}$ and $^{6}\text{L}\text{i}$ in the one-dimensional--three-dimensional mixed dimensions is thus a promising candidate to observe the Efimov physics in fermions.
