We study various questions related to operators with spin in quantum conformal field theory in dimensions higher than two. In particular, we classify conformally-invariant tensor structures which appear in correlation functions of local operators and develop tools for computation of conformal blocks which contribute to these functions. We study the crossing equations for four-point functions using numerical and analytical techniques. Finally, we explore the question of analytic continuation of local operators in spin, which leads us to a simple proof of a generalized Lorentzian inversion formula.
This thesis investigates two aspects of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in D dimensions. Its first part is devoted to conformal blocks, special functions that arise in the partial wave expansion of CFT four-point functions. We prove that these conformal blocks admit an expansion in terms of polar coordinates and show that the expansion coefficients are determined by recursion relations. Conformal blocks are naturally defined on the complex plane: we study their restriction to the real line, and show that they obey a fourth-order differential equation there. This ODE can be used to efficiently compute conformal blocks and their derivatives in general D. Several applications to the conformal bootstrap program are mentioned. The second half of this thesis investigates RG flows that are defined by perturbing a CFT by a number of relevant operators. We study such flows using the Truncated Conformal Space Approach (TCSA) of Yurov and Zamolodchikov, a numerical method that allows for controlled computations in strongly coupled QFTs. Two different RG flows are considered: the free scalar field deformed by a mass term, and phi^4 theory. The former is used as a benchmark, in order to compare numerical TCSA results to exact predictions. TCSA results for phi^4 theory display spontaneous Z_2 symmetry breaking at strong coupling: we study the spectrum of this theory both in the Z_2-broken and preserved phase, and we compare the critical exponents governing the phase transition to known values. In a separate chapter, we show how truncation errors can be reduced by adding suitable counterterms to the bare TCSA action, following earlier work in two dimensions.
A bstract We use the embedding formalism to construct conformal fields in D dimensions, by restricting Lorentz-invariant ensembles of homogeneous neural networks in ( D + 2) dimensions to the projective null cone. Conformal correlators may be computed using the parameter space description of the neural network. Exact four-point correlators are computed in a number of examples, and we perform a 4D conformal block decomposition that elucidates the spectrum. In a non-unitary example the decomposition precisely matches OPE coefficients for the self-correlator, but not for the mixed correlator. In others, the analysis is facilitated by recent approaches to Feynman integrals. Generalized free CFTs are constructed using the infinite-width Gaussian process limit of the neural network, enabling a realization of the free boson. The extension to deep networks constructs conformal fields at each subsequent layer, with recursion relations relating their conformal dimensions and four-point functions. Numerical approaches are discussed.
We study twist operators in higher dimensional CFT’s. In particular, we express their conformal dimension in terms of the energy density for the CFT in a particular thermal ensemble. We construct an expansion of the conformal dimension in power series around n =1, with n being replica parameter. We show that the coefficients in this expansion are determined by higher point correlations of the energy-momentum tensor. In particular, the first and second terms, i.e. the first and second derivatives of the scaling dimension, have a simple universal form. We test these results using holography and free field theory computations, finding agreement in both cases. We also consider the ‘operator product expansion’ of spherical twist operators and finally, we examine the behaviour of correlators of twist operators with other operators in the limit n → 1.
We analyze the operator spectrum of Conformal Field Theories at large conformal dimensions
Delta with and without global symmetries. General constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity allow us to extract a number of universal properties of heavy operator spectrum perturbatively in
1overDelta.\nFirst, we consider four-point correlators and solve crossing equations in the deep Euclidean regime. Large scaling dimension
Delta tails of the weighted spectral density of primary operators of given spin in one channel are matched to the Euclidean OPE data in the other channel. Subleading
1overDelta tails are systematically captured by including more operators in the Euclidean OPE in the dual channel. We use dispersion relations for conformal partial waves in the complex
Delta plane, the Lorentzian inversion formula and complex tauberian theorems to derive this result. We make predictions for the 3d Ising model.\nSecond, we apply the methods of tauberian theory to modular invariance in 2d CFTs. We derive lower and upper bounds on the number of operators within a given energy interval. At high energies we rigorously derive the Cardy formula for the microcanonical entropy together with optimal error estimates for various widths of the averaging energy shell. We identify a new universal contribution to the microcanonical entropy controlled by the central charge and the width of the shell. We derive an upper bound on the spacings between Virasoro primaries. Analogous results are obtained in holographic 2d CFTs. \nThird, we consider unitary CFTs with continuous global symmetries in
d>2. We consider a state created by the lightest operator of large charge
Qgg1 and analyze the correlator of two light charged operators in this state. Assuming the correlator admits a well-defined large
Q expansion and, relatedly, that the macroscopic (thermodynamic) limit of the correlator exists, we find that the crossing equations admit a consistent truncation, where only a finite number
N of Regge trajectories contribute at leading nontrivial order. We classify all such solutions to the crossing. For one Regge trajectory
N=1, the solution is unique and given by the effective field theory of a Goldstone mode.
We demonstrate that various aspects of Conformal Field Theory are amenable to machine learning. Relatively modest feed-forward neural networks are able to distinguish between scale and conformal invariance of a three-point function and identify a crossing-symmetric four-point function to nearly 100% accuracy. Furthermore, neural networks are also able to identify conformal blocks appearing in a putative CFT four-point function and predict the values of the corresponding operator product expansions (OPE) coefficients. Neural networks also successfully classify primary operators by their quantum numbers under discrete symmetries in the CFT from examining OPE data. We also demonstrate that neural networks are able to learn the available OPE data for scalar correlation function in the 3D Ising model and predict the twists of higher-spin operators that appear in scalar OPE channels by regression.
