Spin in Conformal Field Theory

Abstract

We study various questions related to operators with spin in quantum conformal field theory in dimensions higher than two. In particular, we classify conformally-invariant tensor structures which appear in correlation functions of local operators and develop tools for computation of conformal blocks which contribute to these functions. We study the crossing equations for four-point functions using numerical and analytical techniques. Finally, we explore the question of analytic continuation of local operators in spin, which leads us to a simple proof of a generalized Lorentzian inversion formula.

Large Spin Perturbation Theory for Conformal Field Theories

Luis Fernando Alday

We consider conformal field theories around points of large twist degeneracy. Examples of this are theories with weakly broken higher spin symmetry and perturbations around generalized free fields. At the degenerate point we introduce twist conformal blocks. These are eigenfunctions of certain quartic operators and encode the contribution, to a given four-point correlator, of the whole tower of intermediate operators with a given twist. As we perturb around the degenerate point, the twist degeneracy is lifted. In many situations this breaking is controlled by inverse powers of the spin. In such cases the twist conformal blocks can be decomposed into a sequence of functions which we systematically construct. Decomposing the four-point correlator in this basis turns crossing symmetry into an algebraic problem. Our method can be applied to a wide spectrum of conformal field theories in any number of dimensions and at any order in the breaking parameter. As an example, we compute the spectrum of various theories around generalized free fields.

Machine learning etudes in conformal field theories

Heng‐Yu Chen, Yang‐Hui He, Shailesh Lal +1 more

We demonstrate that various aspects of Conformal Field Theory are amenable to machine learning. Relatively modest feed-forward neural networks are able to distinguish between scale and conformal invariance of a three-point function and identify a crossing-symmetric four-point function to nearly 100% accuracy. Furthermore, neural networks are also able to identify conformal blocks appearing in a putative CFT four-point function and predict the values of the corresponding operator product expansions (OPE) coefficients. Neural networks also successfully classify primary operators by their quantum numbers under discrete symmetries in the CFT from examining OPE data. We also demonstrate that neural networks are able to learn the available OPE data for scalar correlation function in the 3D Ising model and predict the twists of higher-spin operators that appear in scalar OPE channels by regression.

Light-ray operators in conformal field theory

Petr Kravchuk

We argue that every CFT contains light-ray operators labeled by a continuous spin J. When J is a positive integer, light-ray operators become integrals of local operators over a null line. However for non-integer J , light-ray operators are genuinely nonlocal and give the analytic continuation of CFT data in spin described by Caron-Huot. A key role in our construction is played by a novel set of intrinsically Lorentzian integral transforms that generalize the shadow transform. Matrix elements of light-ray operators can be computed via the integral of a double-commutator against a conformal block. This gives a simple derivation of Caron-Huot’s Lorentzian OPE inversion formula and lets us generalize it to arbitrary four-point functions. Furthermore, we show that light-ray operators enter the Regge limit of CFT correlators, and generalize conformal Regge theory to arbitrary four-point functions. The average null energy operator is an important example of a light-ray operator. Using our construction, we find a new proof of the average null energy condition (ANEC), and furthermore generalize the ANEC to continuous spin.

INFINITE CONFORMAL SYMMETRY IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

Alexander A. Belavin, Alexander M. Polyakov, Al.B. Zamolodchikov

We present an investigation of the massless, two-dimentional, interacting field theories. Their basic property is their invariance under an infinite-dimensional group of conformal (analytic) transformations. It is shown that the local fields forming the operator algebra can be classified according to the irreducible representations of Virasoro algebra, and that the correlation functions are built up of the “conformal blocks” which are completely determined by the conformal invariance. Exactly solvable conformal theories associated with the degenerate representations are analyzed. In these theories the anomalous dimensions are known exactly and the correlation functions satisfy the systems of linear differential equations.

Operator product expansion convergence in conformal field theory

Duccio Pappadopulo, Slava Rychkov, Johnny Espin +1 more

We clarify questions related to the convergence of the operator product expansion and conformal block decomposition in unitary conformal field theories (for any number of spacetime dimensions). In particular, we explain why these expansions are convergent in a finite region. We also show that the convergence is exponentially fast, in the sense that the operators of dimension above $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ contribute to correlation functions at most $\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{-}a\ensuremath{\Delta})$. Here the constant $a>0$ depends on the positions of operator insertions and we compute it explicitly.

Defects in Conformal Field Theories

Yannick Linke

Extended objects such as line or surface operators, interfaces or boundaries play an important role in conformal field theory. Here we propose a systematic approach tothe relevant conformal blocks which are argued to coincide with the wave functions of an integrable multi-particle Calogero-Sutherland problem. This generalizes a recentobservation for four-point blocks and makes extensive mathematical results from the modern theory of multi-variable hypergeometric functions available for studies ofconformal defects. Applications range from several new relations with scalar four-point blocks to a Lorentzian inversion formula for defect correlators.
