Abstract

We study twist operators in higher dimensional CFT’s. In particular, we express their conformal dimension in terms of the energy density for the CFT in a particular thermal ensemble. We construct an expansion of the conformal dimension in power series around n =1, with n being replica parameter. We show that the coefficients in this expansion are determined by higher point correlations of the energy-momentum tensor. In particular, the first and second terms, i.e. the first and second derivatives of the scaling dimension, have a simple universal form. We test these results using holography and free field theory computations, finding agreement in both cases. We also consider the ‘operator product expansion’ of spherical twist operators and finally, we examine the behaviour of correlators of twist operators with other operators in the limit n → 1.

Dimensional uplifts of thermal two-point functions and higher-derivative CFTs

Songyuan Li, Anastasios C. Petkou

We explore the idea that the mass parameter $m$ can be used as a diagnostic tool for identifying the critical points of thermal two-point functions of massive free scalar fields in odd $d$ dimensions. For general values of $m$ these correlators admit an expansion in thermal conformal blocks associated with symmetric traceless operators of definite scaling dimension. For each spin the higher-twist contributions can be resummed into a closed-form dressing factor of the leading-twist coefficient. At special values of $m$ for which the thermal trace of the energy-momentum tensor vanishes they are identified as two-point functions of thermal CFTs. Through a dimensional uplift, valid for all $m$, we map these correlators to thermal two-point functions of higher-derivative massive theories in $d+2$ dimensions. We show that the thermal trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the $d+2$-dimensional theory is proportional to the free energy of the original $d$-dimensional theory. When that thermal trace vanishes for $m\neq 0$ the uplifted correlators are identified as two-point functions of a higher-derivative nonunitary thermal CFT$_{d+2}$, but they differ from the uplifted nontrivial thermal two-point functions of the original unitary CFT$_d$.

On the mutual information in conformal field theory

Bin Chen, Lin Chen, Peng-xiang Hao +1 more

In this work, we study the universal behaviors in the mutual information of two disjoint spheres in a conformal field theory (CFT). By using the operator product expansion of the spherical twist operator in terms of the conformal family, we show that the large distance expansion of the mutual information can be cast in terms of the conformal blocks. We develop the 1/n prescription to compute the coefficients before the conformal blocks. For a single conformal family, the leading nonvanishing contribution to the mutual information comes from the bilinear operators. We show that the coefficients of these operators take universal forms and such universal behavior persists in the bilinear operators with derivatives as well. Consequently the first few leading order contributions to the mutual information in CFT take universal forms. To illustrate our framework, we discuss the free scalars and free fermions in various dimensions. For the free scalars, we compute the mutual information to the next-to-leading order and find good agreement with the improved numerical lattice result. For the free fermion, we compute the leading order result, which is of universal form, and find the good match with the numerical study. Our formalism could be applied to any CFT potentially.

Universal dynamics of heavy operators in CFT2

Scott Collier, Alexander Maloney, Henry Maxfield +1 more

Abstract We obtain an asymptotic formula for the average value of the operator product expansion coefficients of any unitary, compact two dimensional CFT with c > 1. This formula is valid when one or more of the operators has large dimension or — in the presence of a twist gap — has large spin. Our formula is universal in the sense that it depends only on the central charge and not on any other details of the theory. This result unifies all previous asymptotic formulas for CFT2 structure constants, including those derived from crossing symmetry of four point functions, modular covariance of torus correlation functions, and higher genus modular invariance. We determine this formula at finite central charge by deriving crossing kernels for higher genus crossing equations, which give analytic control over the structure constants even in the absence of exact knowledge of the conformal blocks. The higher genus modular kernels are obtained by sewing together the elementary kernels for four-point crossing and modular transforms of torus one-point functions. Our asymptotic formula is related to the DOZZ formula for the structure constants of Liouville theory, and makes precise the sense in which Liouville theory governs the universal dynamics of heavy operators in any CFT. The large central charge limit provides a link with 3D gravity, where the averaging over heavy states corresponds to a coarse-graining over black hole microstates in holographic theories. Our formula also provides an improved understanding of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in CFT2, and suggests that ETH can be generalized to other kinematic regimes in two dimensional CFTs.

Large Spin Perturbation Theory for Conformal Field Theories

Luis Fernando Alday

We consider conformal field theories around points of large twist degeneracy. Examples of this are theories with weakly broken higher spin symmetry and perturbations around generalized free fields. At the degenerate point we introduce twist conformal blocks. These are eigenfunctions of certain quartic operators and encode the contribution, to a given four-point correlator, of the whole tower of intermediate operators with a given twist. As we perturb around the degenerate point, the twist degeneracy is lifted. In many situations this breaking is controlled by inverse powers of the spin. In such cases the twist conformal blocks can be decomposed into a sequence of functions which we systematically construct. Decomposing the four-point correlator in this basis turns crossing symmetry into an algebraic problem. Our method can be applied to a wide spectrum of conformal field theories in any number of dimensions and at any order in the breaking parameter. As an example, we compute the spectrum of various theories around generalized free fields.

Universal corner entanglement from twist operators

Pablo Bueno, Robert C. Myers, William Witczak‐Krempa

The entanglement entropy in three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) receives a logarithmic contribution characterized by a regulator-independent function a(θ) when the entangling surface contains a sharp corner with opening angle θ. In the limit of a smooth surface (θ → π), this corner contribution vanishes as a(θ) = σ(θ − π)2. In arXiv:1505.04804 , we provided evidence for the conjecture that for any d = 3 CFT, this corner coefficient σ is determined by C T , the coefficient appearing in the two-point function of the stress tensor. Here, we argue that this is an instance of a much more general relation connecting the analogous corner coefficient σ n appearing in the nth Rényi entropy and the scaling dimension h n of the corresponding twist operator. In particular, we find the simple relation h n /σ n = (n − 1)π. We show how it reduces to our previous result as n → 1, and explicitly check its validity for free scalars and fermions. With this new relation, we show that as n → 0, σ n yields the coefficient of the thermal entropy, c S . We also reveal a surprising duality relating the corner coefficients of the scalar and the fermion. Further, we use our result to predict σ n for holographic CFTs dual to four-dimensional Einstein gravity. Our findings generalize to other dimensions, and we emphasize the connection to the interval Rényi entropies of d = 2 CFTs.

Higher particle form factors of branch point twist fields in integrable quantum field theories

Olalla A Castro-Alvaredo, Emanuele Levi

In this paper we compute higher particle form factors of branch point twist fields. These fields were first described in the context of massive (1+1)-dimensional integrable quantum field theories and their correlation functions are related to the bi-partite entanglement entropy. We find analytic expressions for some form factors and check those expressions for consistency, mainly by evaluating the conformal dimension of the corresponding twist field in the underlying conformal field theory. We find that solutions to the form factor equations are not unique so various techniques need to be used to identify those corresponding to the branch point twist field we are interested in. The models for which we carry out our study are characterized by staircase patterns of various physical quantities as functions of the energy scale. As the latter is varied, the β-function associated with these theories comes close to vanishing at several points between the deep infrared and deep ultraviolet regimes. In other words, renormalization group flows approach the vicinity of various critical points before ultimately reaching the ultraviolet fixed point. This feature provides an optimal way of checking the consistency of higher particle form factor solutions, as the changes on the conformal dimension of the twist field at various energy scales can only be accounted for by considering higher particle form factor contributions to the expansion of certain correlation functions.
