Abstract

The interaction of two orthogonally polarized beams and a four-level GaAs quantum well (QW) waveguide is investigated. It is shown that, by applying a static magnetic field normal to the propagation direction of the driving beams, the birefringence can be induced in the QW waveguide. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the dephasing rate between two ground states of the QW waveguide makes it a dichromatic medium and can also diminish the induced birefringence. Our results show how a large and complete magneto-optical rotation in the QW waveguide can be obtained via adjusting the intensity of the magnetic field and also the length of the QW waveguide.

Magneto-optical rotation in the diamond nitrogen-vacancy center

Ali Mortezapour, Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mahdi Ahmadi Borji

Abstract The interaction of two orthogonally polarized beams and a diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) center sample is investigated. It is shown that applying a static magnetic field parallel to the propagation direction of the probe beam makes the diamond NV center sample a birefringent medium. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is attained under the assumption of specific parameters. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) can be manipulated by the control beam. Our results show that how a large and complete MOR can be obtained by adjusting the intensity of the magnetic field and the length of the diamond NV center sample.

Enhanced nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in cold atoms: A theoretical study

Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mitra Valinezhad, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We theoretically investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized probe field in the four-level N-type cold atoms. By applying a static magnetic field and a weak coupling field, it is shown that the birefringence enhancement is induced in the system. Moreover, we show that the static magnetic field has a major role in switching the dichroism to enhanced birefringence in the system. We also obtain a large intensity for the output field with nearly perpendicular MOR angle by 88 degrees with subnatural width. It is demonstrated that Doppler broadening has a destructive effect on the MOR of the polarization direction of the probe field. The results of our study can be used for selecting narrow band of wavelengths and polarization converter for efficient switching of TM/TE polarization modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.

Magneto-optical rotation of surface plasmon polaritons

Habibur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmad +2 more

Abstract We investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a metal and a four-level atomic system. The MOR of SPPs can be controlled and modified with the intensity and frequency of the applied fields. We show the birefringence enhancement of the weak probe fields propagating through the atomic medium in the presence of the static magnetic field. The external magnetic field has a vital role in the generation and control over the MOR of SPPs. The MOR completely stops when either the external magnetic field or the probe field or both are tuned to resonance. A pretty behavior of MOR of SPPs is observed for a specific set of control field frequency. The enhanced MOR of SPP has significant applications in atomic spectroscopy, optical communication, nano-photonics, optical switches, and precise measurement.

Coherent control of birefringence

Anil K. Patnaik, G. S. Agarwal

Summary form only given. Summary from only given. An isotropic medium, having atoms with m degenerate sublevels, when subjected to a magnetic field, can induce birefringence in the medium. As a result, the plane of polarization of a probe field rotates. This rotation is due to the fact that the magnetic field creates asymmetry between the susceptibilities /spl chi//spl plusmn/ of the medium corresponding to the /spl sigma//spl plusmn/ component of the probe field. We apply a coherent control field which modifies /spl chi//spl plusmn/. Therefore the rotation of probe polarization, due to magnetic field alone, can be controlled efficiently with the use of the control field. We demonstrate this enhancement of the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized light.

Coherent control of magneto-optic rotation

Kanhaiya Pandey, Ajay Wasan, Vasant Natarajan A

We experimentally study the rotation of the plane of polarization of a laser beam passing through room-temperature Rb vapour. The rotation occurs because the medium behaves differently for the two orthogonally-polarized components, displaying what is known as circular birefringence or linear dichroism. The difference is induced either by a control laser applied to an auxiliary transition of a ladder-type system, or by an applied axial magnetic field. In the presence of both control laser and magnetic field, the line shape shows an interesting interplay between the two effects with regions of suppressed and enhanced rotation. The line shapes can be understood qualitatively based on a density-matrix analysis of the system.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation produced by atoms near a J=1→J=0 transition

Vitalij Roščinski, Janusz Czub, W. Miklaszewski

The nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in a medium consisting of $J=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J=0$ atoms placed in a static magnetic field is studied. The density matrix approach and irreducible atomic basis are used to describe the state of the atomic system. The stationary propagation equations for two collinear laser beams with perpendicular circular polarizations are derived and analyzed in the case of the magnetic field perpendicular to the light propagation direction. The effect of the linear polarization rotation toward the direction parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field vector and lossless propagation of the resulting light are predicted. The conversion of the circularly polarized beam into linearly polarized one is shown. The propagation of the leading edges of switched on cw-laser beams and their stationary propagation are analyzed numerically. The dependence of the considered effects on the light detuning and on the additional magnetic field component parallel to the light propagation direction is discussed. The destructive role of the collisional relaxation is demonstrated.
