Low-Energy Spin Dynamics of the Honeycomb Spin Liquid Beyond the Kitaev Limit

Abstract

We investigate the generic features of the low energy dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev honeycomb quantum spin liquid perturbed away from its exact soluble limit by generic symmetry-allowed exchange couplings. We find that the spin gap persists in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model, but generally vanishes provided more generic symmetry-allowed interactions exist. We formulate the generic expansion of the spin operator in terms of fractionalized Majorana fermion operators according to the symmetry enriched topological order of the Kitaev spin liquid, described by its projective symmetry group. The dynamical spin structure factor displays power-law scaling bounded by Dirac cones in the vicinity of the Γ, K, and K^{'} points of the Brillouin zone, rather than the spin gap found for the exactly soluble point.

Variational study of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model

Shang-Shun Zhang, Gábor B. Halász, Wei Kang Zhu +1 more

We compute the low-energy excitation spectrum and the dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model through a variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the pure Kitaev honeycomb model. This novel approach reveals the physical reason for the asymmetric stability of the Kitaev spin liquid phases around the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev limits. Moreover, we demonstrate that the fractionalized excitations form bound states in specific regions of each Kitaev spin liquid phase and that certain phase transitions induced by Heisenberg and Gamma interactions are driven by the condensation of such a bound state. Remarkably, this bound state appears as a sharp mode in the dynamical spin structure factor, while its condensation patterns at the appropriate phase transitions provide a simple explanation for the magnetically ordered phases surrounding each Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Dynamical structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the presence of quenched disorder

Daniel Otten, Ananda Roy, Fabian Hassler

Kitaev's model of spins interacting on a honeycomb lattice describes a quantum spin liquid, where an emergent static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field is coupled to Majorana fermions. In the presence of an external magnetic field and for a range of interaction strengths, the system behaves as a gapped, non-Abelian quantum spin liquid. In this phase, the vortex excitations of the emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field have Majorana zero modes bound to them. Motivated by recent experimental progress in measuring and characterizing real materials that could exhibit spin-liquid behavior, we analytically calculate the dynamical spin structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. In particular, we treat the case of quenched disorder in the vortex configurations. Our calculations reveal a peak in the low-energy dynamical structure factor that is a signature of the spin-liquid behavior. We map the effective Hamiltonian to that of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor by using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Subsequently, we analytically calculate the wave functions of the Majorana zero modes, the energy splitting for finite separation of the vortices and, finally, the dynamical structure factor in presence of quenched disorder.

Nature of Topological Phase Transition of Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

Huanzhi Hu, Frank Krüger

We investigate the nature of the topological quantum phase transition between the gapless and gapped Kitaev quantum spin liquid phases away from the exactly solvable point. The transition is driven by anisotropy of the Kitaev couplings. At the critical point, the two Dirac points of the gapless Majorana modes merge, resulting in the formation of a semi-Dirac point with quadratic and linear band touching directions. We derive an effective Gross-Neveu-Yukawa-type field theory that describes the topological phase transition in the presence of additional magnetic interactions. We obtain the infrared scaling form of the propagator of the dynamical Ising order parameter field and perform a renormalization-group analysis. The universality of the transition is found to be different from that of symmetry-breaking phase transitions of semi-Dirac electrons. However, as in the electronic case, the Majorana fermions acquire an anomalous dimension, indicative of the breakdown of the fractionalized quasiparticle description.

Dynamics of a quantum spin liquid beyond integrability: The Kitaev-Heisenberg- Γ model in an augmented parton mean-field theory

Johannes Knolle, Subhro Bhattacharjee, Roderich Moessner

We present an augmented parton mean-field theory which (i) reproduces the exact ground state, spectrum, and dynamics of the quantum spin-liquid phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model, and (ii) is amenable to the inclusion of integrability breaking terms, allowing a perturbation theory from a controlled starting point. Thus, we exemplarily study dynamical spin correlations of the honeycomb Kitaev quantum spin liquid within the $K\ensuremath{-}J\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ model, which includes Heisenberg and symmetric-anisotropic (pseudodipolar) interactions. This allows us to trace changes of the correlations in the regime of slowly moving fluxes, where the theory captures the dominant deviations when integrability is lost. These include an asymmetric shift together with a broadening of the dominant peak in the response as a function of frequency, the generation of further-neighbor correlations and their structure in real and spin space, and a resulting loss of an approximate rotational symmetry of the structure factor in reciprocal space. We discuss the limitations of this approach and also view the neutron-scattering experiments on the putative proximate quantum spin-liquid material $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ in the light of the results from this extended parton theory.

Dynamical response theory of interacting Majorana fermions and its application to generic Kitaev quantum spin liquids in a field

Peng Rao, Roderich Moessner, Johannes Knolle

Motivated by the appearance of Majorana fermions in a broad range of correlated and topological electronic systems, we develop a general method to compute the dynamical response of interacting Majorana fermions in the random-phase approximation (RPA). This can be applied self-consistently on top of Majorana mean-field theory backgrounds, thereby in particular providing a powerful tool to analyze behavior in the vicinity of (various heavily studied) exactly soluble models. Prime examples are quantum spin liquids (QSL) with emergent Majorana excitations, with the celebrated exact solution of Kitaev. We employ the RPA to study in considerable detail phase structure and dynamics of the extended Kitaev honeycomb K J Γ model, with and without an applied field. First, we benchmark our method with Kitaev's exactly soluble model, finding a remarkable agreement. The interactions between Majorana fermions even turn out to mimic the effect of local Z 2 flux excitations, which we explain analytically. Second, we show how small non-Kitaev couplings J and Γ induce Majorana bound states, resulting in sharp features in the dynamical structure factor in the presence of fractionalization: such “spinon excitons” naturally appear, and can coexist and interact with the broad Majorana continuum. Third, for increasing couplings or field, our theory predicts instabilities of the Kitaev QSL (KQSL) triggered by the condensation of the sharp modes. From the high-symmetry momenta of the condensation we can deduce which magnetically ordered phases surround the KQSL, in good agreement with previous finite-size numerics. We discuss implications for experiments and the broad range of applicability of our method to other QSL and Majorana systems.

Fractional excitations in Kitaev quasi-one-dimensional chain

Ritwika Majumder

The Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant interest due to its quantum spin liquid ground state, fractionalized Majorana excitations, and topological properties. Motivated by these features, we introduce a quasi-one-dimensional Kitaev-like spin chain derived from a truncated honeycomb geometry. The resulting Majorana band structure contains both dispersive and flat bands, with a gap closing at a critical anisotropy that separates trivial and chiral topological phases. Under open boundary conditions, the topological regime hosts zero-energy edge modes protected by chiral symmetry, placing the system in the BDI symmetry class with a quantized winding number. In the excited spectrum, localized plaquette modes emerge near zero energy and can be tuned by introducing domains of negative plaquettes. The dynamical spin correlation function reveals broad continua associated with fractionalized excitations, together with characteristic low-energy spectral weight from edge Majorana modes. These features distinguish the present system from conventional Heisenberg spin chains and provide experimentally relevant fingerprints of chiral topological order. Our model thus establishes a conceptual bridge between the two-dimensional Kitaev spin liquid and Kitaev's one-dimensional quantum wire.
