Abstract

We studied optical response of microcavity non-equilibrium exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate with saturable nonlinearity under simultaneous resonant and non-resonant pumping. We demonstrated the emergence of multistabile behavior due to the saturation of the excitonic absorption. Stable periodic Rabi-type oscillations of the excitonic and photonic condensate components in the regime of the stationary pump and their transition to the chaotic dynamics through the cascade of Hopf bifurcations by tuning of the electrical pump are revealed.

On the mechanism of the maintenance of Rabi oscillations in the system of exciton polaritons in a microcavity

Sevak Demirchyan, Igor Yu. Chestnov, Sergei M Arakelyan +2 more

A physical mechanism of the implementation of undamped Rabi oscillations in the system of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity in the presence of nonresonant pumping has been proposed. Various mechanisms of the stimulated scattering of excitons from the reservoir have been considered. It has been shown that undamped oscillations of the population of the photon component of the condensate can be caused by the feeding of a coherent Rabi oscillator owing to the pair scattering of excitons from the reservoir to the ground state. The effect should be observed in spite of a more intense relaxation of polaritons of the upper branch observed experimentally.

Chaotic dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical cavities

M. Diver, Gordon R. M. Robb, Gian‐Luca Oppo

Summary form only given. We perform a theoretical and numerical analysis of a system comprising a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) interacting with a laser beam in an optical cavity. Recent studies have modelled this system with two motional modes coupled with a light mode and have shown nonlinear behaviour, e.g. bistability [1,2]. Our approach tackles the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled to the cavity field as well as expansions in a number of motional modes. We consider a fixed value of the cavity-pump detuning and increase the pump intensity to cross the region of bistability (see Fig. 1 left panel). The system then displays a variety of behaviours, including regular oscillations, chaotic dynamics, and quasi-periodic behaviour, as displayed in the right panel of Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 we have used a coupled-equation system comprising the Schrödinger wave equation and a cavity-field evolution [3], where we have adiabatically eliminated the latter leading to a conservative dynamics. The chaotic dynamics here is not induced by the detector noise and is an intrinsic property of the light-BEC interaction. Our second model considers a multiple-modes expansion. By using just three modes, the chaotic dynamics observed in the full simulation is recovered. The bifurcation structure, typical of conservative dynamics in the vicinity of a separatrix, is identified through the use of projections and power spectra. Our results suggest that chaotic oscillations in this system are deterministic in nature and arise purely from nonlinear effects. In more general terms, the model is a novel example of quantum matter exhibiting chaotic behaviour and invites further research.

Pumping-assisted multistability of exciton-polariton condensates

Zi-Fa Yu, Ju-Kui Xue, Lin Zhuang +2 more

We investigate the multistability of exciton-polariton condensates excited by a nonresonant pump. An increase in pumping power moves the system away from non-Hermitian spectral degeneracy towards spectrum splitting through an exceptional point, which induces a transition from monostability to multistability. In the region of multistability, the system contains one steady and two metastable states. The analyses of stability show that metastable states maintain a finite lifetime and eventually evolve to steady states. A steady state with multi-peak soliton different from general single-peak soliton is discovered for attractive polariton-polariton interaction. Moreover, we depict the diagram of the multistability in full parameter space to accurately manipulate the multistability. Our results open up exciting possibilities for controlling non-Hermitian quantum multistable states, which may be useful to designing polariton-based devices exploiting optical multistability.

Synchronization-Induced Limit Cycles and Hysteresis in Spinor Exciton-Polaritons

Saeid Asgarnezhad-Zorgabad, Z. Jalali-Mola, V. V. Konotop +1 more

We study the nonlinear dynamics of spinor exciton-polaritons in resonantly pumped microcavities. Using steady-state analysis and computing eigenfrequencies via Bogoliubov-like linearization, we show that multiple Hopf bifurcations beyond conventional bistability occur within specific power regimes and are not associated with stable solutions of the system. Owing to nonlinear excitonic interactions, these transitions occur at different pump powers during forward and backward pump sweeps, leading to pronounced hysteresis between fixed-point and limit-cycle states. In the spinor regime, multiple limit-cycle branches and associated dynamical hysteresis loops emerge due to the interplay of polarization coupling and spin-dependent nonlinearities. We show how the locations of the bifurcation points can be tuned by the pump frequency and other system parameters. Our results identify synchronization as the organizing principle underlying limit-cycle formation, dynamical hysteresis, and bifurcation cascades in driven spinor exciton-polariton microcavities.

Nonlinear dynamics of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate

Guangyao Li

Exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are newly emerged quantum systems that are capable of showing macroscopic quantum phenomena with intrinsic open-dissipative nature. The spatial distribution of the polariton density, without any external potential, can be controlled by the geometric shape of the pumping laser, enabling the investigation of polariton dynamics with topologically non-trivial configurations. Meanwhile, exciton-polaritons have spin degrees of freedom inherited from excitons and photons, making it a candidate for the realization of quantum logic gates. In this thesis, we will investigate theoretically the nonlinear dynamics of exciton-polariton BECs involving both polaritons' spatial degrees of freedom and spin degrees of freedom, and interactions between them. This thesis is organised as follows: In Chapter 1, we will present an overall review of exiton-polariton systems and important properties of polariton BECs and then introduce the dynamical equations with various interactions that will serve as the main theoretical tool for subsequent chapters. Several polariton pumping and trapping techniques appearing in later chapters will also be introduced. In Chapter 2, we will investigate the superfluidity properties of a single-component polariton condensate under an incoherent annular pumping configuration. By studying the stability properties of polariton persistent currents, we find that the persistent currents can exhibit dynamical instability and energetic-like instability according to different parameter region. A stability phase diagram will be given and its relation with the Landau's criterion will be discussed. In Chapter 3, we will investigate the spin dynamics of a two-component polariton condensate under a homogeneous pumping configuration. Owing to the Josephson coupling, there exist multiple steady state solutions that allow of controlled spin state switching. A desynchronized region where there exists no stable steady solution is found. In the desynchronized region, a desynchronized state beating periodically over time can exist, which will serve as a building block of spin waves presented in the next chapter. In Chapter 4, by combining results from the previous two chapters we will investigate generally the nonlinear dynamics of polariton condensates under an annular pumping configuration. The spin-orbit interaction provided by the Josephson coupling supports azimuthon states that have simultaneous modulations in both amplitude and phase. The azimuthon states, when viewed in a different polarization basis, form rotating spin waves that can be referred to as the optical ferris wheel. In Chapter 5, results from previous chapters will be extended to micocavities that support the anisotropic TE-TM splitting interaction. Rotating singularities (small-scale vortices) are found as a result. Their properties and experimental observation techniques will be discussed. Chapter 2-5 provide a theoretical framework for the nonlinear dynamics of polariton condensates. They rely mostly on optical trapping techniques and are ready to be tested in experiments. In Chapter 6, polaritons trapped by an engineered periodic mesa potential will be discussed. We will investigate the band structure of polaritons under the influence of the periodic potential together with discussions on the phase-modulated interference pattern which corresponds to the polariton Talbot patterns observed in experiments.

Coupled exciton-photon Bose condensate: Non-Markovian character of the open system

Andrei A. Elistratov, Yu. E. Lozovik

For an nonequilibrium system, in the framework of the Keldysh formalism we explore the kinetics of the polariton condensate in a quantum well embedded in an optical microcavity taking into account pumping and leakage of excitons and photons. We make ab initio derivation of the quantum kinetic equations for the condensates and for reservoirs. We show that the real open polariton system has the non-Markovian character at times comparable to the Rabi oscillation period.
