Abstract

Quantum communication without a shared reference frame or the construction of a relational quantum theory requires the notion of a quantum reference frame. We analyze aspects of quantum reference frames associated with noncompact groups, specifically, the group of spatial translations and Galilean boosts. We begin by demonstrating how the usually employed group average, used to dispense of the notion of an external reference frame, leads to unphysical states when applied to reference frames associated with noncompact groups. However, we show that this average does lead naturally to a reduced state on the relative degrees of freedom of a system, which was previously considered by Angelo et al. [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44, 145304 (2011)]. We then study in detail the informational properties of this reduced state for systems of two and three particles in Gaussian states.

Communicating without shared reference frames

Alexander R. H. Smith

We generalize a quantum communication protocol introduced by Bartlett et al. [New J. Phys. 11, 063013 (2009)], in which two parties communicating do not share a classical reference frame, to the case where changes of their reference frames form a one-dimensional noncompact Lie group. Alice sends to Bob the state ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{R}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}$, where ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}$ is the state of the system Alice wishes to communicate and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{R}$ is the state of an ancillary system serving as a token of her reference frame. Because Bob is ignorant of the relationship between his reference frame and Alice's, he will describe the state ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{R}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}$ as an average over all possible reference frames. Bob measures the reference token and applies a correction to the system Alice wished to communicate conditioned on the outcome of the measurement. The recovered state ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is decohered with respect to ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}$, the amount of decoherence depending on the properties of the reference token ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{R}$. We present an example of this protocol when Alice and Bob do not share a reference frame associated with the one-dimensional translation group and use the fidelity between ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{S}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ to quantify the success of the recovery operation.

Relative subsystems and quantum reference frame transformations

Esteban Castro-Ruiz, Ognyan Oreshkov

Recently there has been much effort in developing a quantum generalisation of reference frame transformations. Despite important progress, a complete understanding of their principles is still lacking. Here we derive quantum reference frame transformations for a broad range of symmetry groups from first principles, using only standard quantum theory. Our framework, naturally based on incoherent rather than coherent group averaging, yields reversible transformations that only depend on the reference frames and system of interest. We find more general transformations than those studied so far, which are valid only in a restricted subspace. Our framework contains additional degrees of freedom in the form of an "extra particle", which carries information about the quantum features of reference frame states. We study the centrally extended Galilei group specifically, highlighting key differences from previous proposals.

Interacting quantum reference frames

Leonardo Chataignier, Alexander R. H. Smith

We formulate quantum reference frames within the Dirac quantization of gauge theories, where physical states are obtained from a kinematical Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$ by group averaging. We assume the gauge group $G$ is unimodular, and we define a quantum reference frame as a system of coherent states associated with a group $G_R$ of frame orientations acting on a tensor factor of $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$. In direct analogy with the Faddeev-Popov procedure in path integrals, we show that the physical inner product can be written in terms of a choice of frame orientation with an appropriate operator measure, but that the physical Hilbert space is independent of this choice of frame. This yields a generalization of the Page-Wootters reduction map used to define conditional states and conditional probabilities of measurement outcomes given a frame orientation. These probabilities correspond to the expectation values of relational Dirac observables obtained from generalizations of previously considered relativization maps. Our main result is that the map that implements a change of frame is unitary, even when $G$ does not act as a tensor-product representation across a factorization of $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$. The formalism therefore accommodates interactions between reference frames and the systems described relative to them. We apply this formalism to temporal frames, showing that a unitary Schrödinger equation emerges for an interacting clock and system, and that a previously reported time-nonlocal Schrödinger equation is recovered in an appropriate limit. With this, problems of non-unitarity are avoided by the use of the gauge-fixing measure in the physical inner product. We also discuss the case of interacting spatial frames, where the known correspondence between coherence in one frame and entanglement in another is shown to depend on the coupling.

Relative subsystems and quantum reference frame transformations

Recently there has been much effort in developing a quantum generalisation of reference frame transformations. Our framework, naturally based on incoherent rather than coherent group averaging, yields reversible transformations that only depend on the reference frames and system of interest. Our formalism is valid for a broad range of symmetry groups. We study the centrally extended Galilei group specifically, highlighting key differences from previous proposals.

Quantum Reference Frames and The Poincaré Symmetry

Oleg Kabernik

The concept of a reference frame has been a part of the physical formalism since the early days of physics. The reference frame was always understood as a physical system with respect to which states of other physical systems are described. With the adoption of quantum theory, our understanding of physical systems has fundamentally changed, yet we still rely on classical systems for the definition of reference frames. If we acknowledge the fact that all systems are quantum mechanical, including reference frames, then we have to be able to describe quantum systems relative to other quantum systems. \n \nIn this thesis we develop a framework for integrating quantum reference frames into the formalism of quantum mechanics. We show how the description of states and measurements has to be refined in order to account for the quantum nature of the reference frame. Initially, we study the implications of the new description with a quantum reference frame associated with a generic compact group. Then, we apply the same approach to the study of relativistic quantum reference frames associated with the Poincaré group, which is not compact. \n \nOur findings for the generic compact group include an analysis of how well a quantum system defines a frame of reference for other systems. Also in the generic case we analyze the effects of a measurement on a quantum reference frame. In the relativistic case we first find how the massive representations of the Poincaré group decompose into irreducible representations. This is a key problem in the analysis of quantum reference frames. Finally, we analyze a relativistic quantum reference frame that is used for measuring the total momentum. We will show how the relativistic measurements of total momentum should be described with respect to a quantum reference frame. We will also show how these measurements affect the quantum reference frame.

Quantum Galilei group as quantum reference frame transformations

Ángel Ballesteros, Diego Fernández-Silvestre, Flaminia Giacomini +1 more

Quantum groups have been widely explored as a tool to encode possible nontrivial generalisations of reference frame transformations, relevant in quantum gravity. In quantum information, it was found that the reference frames can be associated to quantum particles, leading to quantum reference frames transformations. The connection between these two frameworks is still unexplored, but if clarified it will lead to a more profound understanding of symmetries in quantum mechanics and quantum gravity. Here, we establish a correspondence between quantum reference frame transformations and transformations generated by a quantum deformation of the Galilei group with commutative time, taken at first order in the quantum deformation parameter. This is found once the quantum group noncommutative transformation parameters are represented on the phase space of a quantum particle, and upon setting the quantum deformation parameter to be proportional to the inverse of the mass of the particle serving as the quantum reference frame. These results allow us to show that quantum reference frame transformations are physically relevant when the state of the quantum reference frame is in a quantum superposition of semiclassical states. We conjecture that the all-order quantum Galilei group describes quantum reference frame transformations between more general quantum states of the quantum reference frame.
