Relative subsystems and quantum reference frame transformations

Abstract

Recently there has been much effort in developing a quantum generalisation of reference frame transformations. Despite important progress, a complete understanding of their principles is still lacking. In particular, we argue that previous proposals could yield reversible transformations between arbitrary quantum reference frames only when applied to the whole universe. In contrast, here we derive quantum reference frame transformations from first principles, using only standard quantum theory. Our framework, naturally based on incoherent rather than coherent group averaging, yields reversible transformations that only depend on the reference frames and system of interest. We find more general transformations than those studied so far, which are valid only in a restricted subspace. Importantly, our framework contains additional degrees of freedom in the form of an "extra particle," which carries information about the quantum features of reference frame states. Our formalism is valid for a broad range of symmetry groups. We study the centrally extended Galilei group specifically, highlighting key differences from previous proposals.

The group structure of dynamical transformations between quantum reference frames

Angel Ballesteros, Flaminia Giacomini, Giulia Gubitosi

Recently, it was shown that when reference frames are associated to quantum systems, the transformation laws between such quantum reference frames need to be modified to take into account the quantum and dynamical features of the reference frames. This led to a relational description of the phase space variables of the quantum system of which the quantum reference frames are part of. While such transformations were shown to be symmetries of the system's Hamiltonian, the question remained unanswered as to whether they enjoy a group structure, similar to that of the Galilei group relating classical reference frames in quantum mechanics. In this work, we identify the canonical transformations on the phase space of the quantum systems comprising the quantum reference frames, and show that these transformations close a group structure defined by a Lie algebra, which is different from the usual Galilei algebra of quantum mechanics. We further find that the elements of this new algebra are in fact the building blocks of the quantum reference frames transformations previously identified, which we recover. Finally, we show how the transformations between classical reference frames described by the standard Galilei group symmetries can be obtained from the group of transformations between quantum reference frames by taking the zero limit of the parameter that governs the additional noncommutativity introduced by the quantum nature of inertial transformations.

Quantum Galilei group as quantum reference frame transformations

Ángel Ballesteros, Diego Fernández-Silvestre, Flaminia Giacomini +1 more

Quantum groups have been widely explored as a tool to encode possible nontrivial generalisations of reference frame transformations, relevant in quantum gravity. In quantum information, it was found that the reference frames can be associated to quantum particles, leading to quantum reference frames transformations. The connection between these two frameworks is still unexplored, but if clarified it will lead to a more profound understanding of symmetries in quantum mechanics and quantum gravity. Here, we establish a correspondence between quantum reference frame transformations and transformations generated by a quantum deformation of the Galilei group with commutative time, taken at first order in the quantum deformation parameter. This is found once the quantum group noncommutative transformation parameters are represented on the phase space of a quantum particle, and upon setting the quantum deformation parameter to be proportional to the inverse of the mass of the particle serving as the quantum reference frame. These results allow us to show that quantum reference frame transformations are physically relevant when the state of the quantum reference frame is in a quantum superposition of semiclassical states. We conjecture that the all-order quantum Galilei group describes quantum reference frame transformations between more general quantum states of the quantum reference frame.

The Perspectives of Non-Ideal Quantum Reference Frames

Sébastien Christophe Garmier, Ladina Hausmann, Esteban Castro-Ruiz

We define the perspective of any quantum reference frame (QRF) and construct reversible transformations between different perspectives. Our construction is based on two principles motivated operationally by the change from relative to absolute coordinates and leads to an incoherent group averaging approach with general symmetry group. Thereby, it extends the framework of [arXiv:2110.13199] from ideal QRFs, which generally require infinite resources like energy or angular momentum, to non-ideal QRFs, with only finite resources. We find that the perspective of a non-ideal QRF deviates significantly from that of an ideal QRF: Firstly, systems described relative to a non-ideal QRF appear superselected. Secondly, the structure of the perspective of a non-ideal QRF attests that successive relational operations on a system lead to back-reaction on this QRF.

Compositionality in quantum reference frame perspectives

Bruna Sahdo, Esteban Castro-Ruiz

Understanding a composite system through its constituents is a fundamental practice in physics. In the context of quantum reference frames (QRFs), however, combining the usual quantum-theoretic notion of composition with QRF perspectives gives rise to subtle issues, such as the 'paradox of the third particle'. Here we study in depth how to compose subsystems in QRF perspectives, building on a recent formalism for QRFs [E$.$Castro-Ruiz and O$.$Oreshkov, 2025]. We first show how the frames of external observers can be internalised and treated within the framework. This establishes a consistent hierarchy of QRF perspectives, which we use to define the adding and removing of subsystems. We then explain how, owing to the so-called 'extra-particle' degrees of freedom, the formalism gives a consistent treatment of subsystems, avoiding any paradoxes by construction. Consistency then implies that composing subsystems in a QRF perspective differs from, and generalises, the standard quantum-theoretic case. In particular, not every state can be appended in tensor-product form relative to a QRF, and we characterise the set of compatible states. Finally, we introduce 'classicalisation', a procedure that recovers a classical-like perspective from a general QRF. This procedure circumvents the aforementioned state restrictions but carries a different operational meaning, which we study through a concrete example.

Quantum reference frames for general symmetry groups

Anne-Catherine de la Hamette, Thomas D. Galley

A fully relational quantum theory necessarily requires an account of changes of quantum reference frames, where quantum reference frames are quantum systems relative to which other systems are described. By introducing a relational formalism which identifies coordinate systems with elements of a symmetry group G , we define a general operator for reversibly changing between quantum reference frames associated to a group G . This generalises the known operator for translations and boosts to arbitrary finite and locally compact groups, including non-Abelian groups. We show under which conditions one can uniquely assign coordinate choices to physical systems (to form reference frames) and how to reversibly transform between them, providing transformations between coordinate systems which are `in a superposition' of other coordinate systems. We obtain the change of quantum reference frame from the principles of relational physics and of coherent change of reference frame. We prove a theorem stating that the change of quantum reference frame consistent with these principles is unitary if and only if the reference systems carry the left and right regular representations of G . We also define irreversible changes of reference frame for classical and quantum systems in the case where the symmetry group G is a semi-direct product G = N ⋊ P or a direct product G = N × P , providing multiple examples of both reversible and irreversible changes of quantum reference system along the way. Finally, we apply the relational formalism and changes of reference frame developed in this work to the Wigner's friend scenario, finding similar conclusions to those in relational quantum mechanics using an explicit change of reference frame as opposed to indirect reasoning using measurement operators.
