Abstract

We formulate quantum reference frames within the Dirac quantization of gauge theories, where physical states are obtained from a kinematical Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$ by group averaging. We assume the gauge group $G$ is unimodular, and we define a quantum reference frame as a system of coherent states associated with a group $G_R$ of frame orientations acting on a tensor factor of $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$. In direct analogy with the Faddeev-Popov procedure in path integrals, we show that the physical inner product can be written in terms of a choice of frame orientation with an appropriate operator measure, but that the physical Hilbert space is independent of this choice of frame. This yields a generalization of the Page-Wootters reduction map used to define conditional states and conditional probabilities of measurement outcomes given a frame orientation. These probabilities correspond to the expectation values of relational Dirac observables obtained from generalizations of previously considered relativization maps. Our main result is that the map that implements a change of frame is unitary, even when $G$ does not act as a tensor-product representation across a factorization of $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$. The formalism therefore accommodates interactions between reference frames and the systems described relative to them. We apply this formalism to temporal frames, showing that a unitary Schrödinger equation emerges for an interacting clock and system, and that a previously reported time-nonlocal Schrödinger equation is recovered in an appropriate limit. With this, problems of non-unitarity are avoided by the use of the gauge-fixing measure in the physical inner product. We also discuss the case of interacting spatial frames, where the known correspondence between coherence in one frame and entanglement in another is shown to depend on the coupling.

Entanglement-Asymmetry Correspondence for Internal Quantum Reference Frames

Anne-Catherine de la Hamette, Stefan L. Ludescher, Markus P. Müller

In the quantization of gauge theories and quantum gravity, it is crucial to treat reference frames such as rods or clocks not as idealized external classical relata, but as internal quantum subsystems. In the Page-Wootters formalism, for example, evolution of a quantum system S is described by a stationary joint state of S and a quantum clock, where time dependence of S arises from conditioning on the value of the clock. Here, we consider (possibly imperfect) internal quantum reference frames R for arbitrary compact symmetry groups, and show that there is an exact quantitative correspondence between the amount of entanglement in the invariant state on RS and the amount of asymmetry in the corresponding conditional state on S. Surprisingly, this duality holds exactly regardless of the choice of coherent state system used to condition on the reference frame. Averaging asymmetry over all conditional states, we obtain a simple representation-theoretic expression that admits the study of the quality of imperfect quantum reference frames, quantum speed limits for imperfect clocks, and typicality of asymmetry in a unified way. Our results shed light on the role of entanglement for establishing asymmetry in a fully symmetric quantum world.

Quantum reference frames for general symmetry groups

Anne-Catherine de la Hamette, Thomas D. Galley

A fully relational quantum theory necessarily requires an account of changes of quantum reference frames, where quantum reference frames are quantum systems relative to which other systems are described. By introducing a relational formalism which identifies coordinate systems with elements of a symmetry group G, we define a general operator for reversibly changing between quantum reference frames associated to a group G. This generalises the known operator for translations and boosts to arbitrary finite and locally compact groups, including non-Abelian groups. We show under which conditions one can uniquely assign coordinate choices to physical systems (to form reference frames) and how to reversibly transform between them, providing transformations between coordinate systems which are 'in a superposition' of other coordinate systems. We obtain the change of quantum reference frame from the principles of relational physics and of coherent change of reference frame. We prove a theorem stating that the change of quantum reference frame consistent with these principles is unitary if and only if the reference systems carry the left and right regular representations of G. We also define irreversible changes of reference frame for classical and quantum systems in the case where the symmetry group G is a semidirect product G=N (sic) P or a direct product G = N x P, providing multiple examples of both reversible and irreversible changes of quantum reference system along the way. Finally, we apply the relational formalism and changes of reference frame developed in this work to the Wigner's friend scenario, finding similar conclusions to those in relational quantum mechanics using an explicit change of reference frame as opposed to indirect reasoning using measurement operators.

Perspective-neutral approach to quantum frame covariance for general symmetry groups

Anne-Catherine de la Hamette, Thomas D. Galley, Philipp A. Höhn +2 more

In the absence of external relata, internal quantum reference frames (QRFs) appear widely in the literature on quantum gravity, gauge theories and quantum foundations. Here, we extend the perspective-neutral approach to QRF covariance to general unimodular Lie groups. This is a framework that links internal QRF perspectives via a manifestly gauge-invariant Hilbert space in the form of "quantum coordinate transformations", and we clarify how it is a quantum extension of special covariance. We model the QRF orientations as coherent states which give rise to a covariant POVM, furnishing a consistent probability interpretation and encompassing non-ideal QRFs whose orientations are not perfectly distinguishable. We generalize the construction of relational observables, establish a variety of their algebraic properties and equip them with a transparent conditional probability interpretation. We import the distinction between gauge transformations and physical symmetries from gauge theories and identify the latter as QRF reorientations. The "quantum coordinate maps" into an internal QRF perspective are constructed via a conditioning on the QRF's orientation, generalizing the Page-Wootters formalism and a symmetry reduction procedure. We find two types of QRF transformations: gauge induced "quantum coordinate transformations" as passive unitary changes of description and symmetry induced active changes of relational observables from one QRF to another. We reveal new effects: (i) QRFs with non-trivial orientation isotropy groups can only resolve isotropy-group-invariant properties of other subsystems; (ii) in the absence of symmetries, the internal perspective Hilbert space "rotates" through the kinematical subsystem Hilbert space as the QRF changes orientation. Finally, we invoke the symmetries to generalize the quantum relativity of subsystems before comparing with other approaches. [Abridged]

Operational Quantum Frames: An operational approach to quantum reference frames

Jan Głowacki

The quantum reference frames program is based on the idea that reference frames should be treated as quantum physical systems. In this work, we combine these insights with the emphasis on operationality, understood as refraining from introducing into the framework objects not directly related to in principle verifiable probabilities of measurement outcomes, and identifying the setups indistinguishable as such. Based on intuitions from special relativity and gauge theory, we introduce an operational notion of a quantum reference frame -- which is defined as a quantum system equipped with a covariant positive operator-valued measure (POVM) -- and build a framework on the concept of operational equivalence that allows us to enforce operationality by quotienting the quantum state spaces with equivalence relation of indistinguishability by the available effects, assumed to be invariant under gauge transformations, and framed in the sense of respecting the choice of the frame's POVM. Such effects are accessed via the yen construction, which maps effects on the system to those on the composite system, satisfying gauge invariance and framing. They are called relative, and the classes of states indistinguishable by them are referred to as relative states. We show that when the frame is localizable, meaning that it allows for states that give rise to a highly localized probability distribution of the frame's observable, by restricting the relative description upon such localized frame preparation we recover the usual, non-relational formalism of quantum mechanics. We provide a consistent way of translating between different relative descriptions by means of frame-change maps and compare these with the corresponding notions in other approaches to QRF, establishing an operational agreement in the domain of common applicability.

Spacetime Quantum Reference Frames and superpositions of proper times

Flaminia Giacomini

In general relativity, the description of spacetime relies on idealised rods and clocks, which identify a reference frame. In any concrete scenario, reference frames are associated to physical systems, which are ultimately quantum in nature. A relativistic description of the laws of physics hence needs to take into account such quantum reference frames (QRFs), through which spacetime can be given an operational meaning. Here, we introduce the notion of a spacetime quantum reference frame, associated to a quantum particle in spacetime. Such formulation has the advantage of treating space and time on equal footing, and of allowing us to describe the dynamical evolution of a set of quantum systems from the perspective of another quantum system, where the parameter in which the rest of the physical systems evolves coincides with the proper time of the particle taken as the QRF. Crucially, the proper times in two different QRFs are not related by a standard transformation, but they might be in a quantum superposition one with respect to the other.Concretely, we consider a system of N relativistic quantum particles in a weak gravitational field, and introduce a timeless formulation in which the global state of the N particles appears "frozen", but the dynamical evolution is recovered in terms of relational quantities. The position and momentum Hilbert space of the particles is used to fix the QRF via a transformation to the local frame of the particle such that the metric is locally inertial at the origin of the QRF. The internal Hilbert space corresponds to the clock space, which keeps the proper time in the local frame of the particle. Thanks to this fully relational construction we show how the remaining particles evolve dynamically in the relational variables from the perspective of the QRF. The construction proposed here includes the Page-Wootters mechanism for non interacting clocks when the external degrees of freedom are neglected. Finally, we find that a quantum superposition of gravitational redshifts and a quantum superposition of special-relativistic time dilations can be observed in the QRF.
