Quantum cluster approach to the topological invariants in correlated Chern insulators

Abstract

Abstract We detect the topological properties of Chern insulators with strong Coulomb interactions by use of cluster perturbation theory and variational cluster approach. The common scheme in previous studies only involves the calculation of the interacting bulk Chern number within the natural-unit cell by means of the so-called topological Hamiltonian. With close investigations on a prototype model, the half-filled Haldane Hubbard model, which is subject to both periodic and open boundary conditions, we uncover the unexpected failure of this scheme due to the explicit breaking of the translation symmetry. Instead, we assert that the faithful interacting bulk Chern number in the framework of quantum cluster approaches can be computed in the enlarged unit cell, which is free of the fault caused by the explicit translation symmetry breaking and consistent with the interacting bulk-edge correspondence.

Quantum cluster approach to the spinful Haldane-Hubbard model

Jingxiang Wu, Jean Paul Latyr Faye, David Sénéchal +1 more

We study the spinful fermionic Haldane-Hubbard model at half-filling using a combination of quantum cluster methods: cluster perturbation theory, the variational cluster approximation, and cluster dynamical mean-field theory. We explore possible zero-temperature phases of the model as a function of onsite repulsive interaction strength and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude and phase. Our approach allows us to access the regime of intermediate interaction strength, where charge fluctuations are significant and effective spin model descriptions may not be justified. Our approach also improves upon mean-field solutions of the Haldane-Hubbard model by retaining local quantum fluctuations and treating them nonperturbatively. We find a correlated topological Chern insulator for weak interactions and a topologically trivial N\'eel antiferromagnetic insulator for strong interactions. For intermediate interactions, we find that topologically nontrivial N\'eel antiferromagnetic insulating phases and/or a topologically nontrivial nonmagnetic insulating phase may be stabilized.

Topological Anderson insulating phases in the interacting Haldane model

João S. Silva, Eduardo V. Castro, Rubem Mondaini +2 more

We analyze the influence of disorder and strong correlations on the topology of two-dimensional Chern insulators. A mean-field calculation in the half-filled Haldane model with extended Hubbard interactions and Anderson disorder shows that the disorder favors topology in the interacting case and extends the topological phase to a larger region of the Hubbard parameters. In the absence of a staggered potential, we find a novel disorder-driven topological phase with Chern number $C=1$, with the coexistence of topology with long-range spin and charge orders. More conventional topological Anderson insulating phases are also found in the presence of a finite staggered potential.

Topological phase transitions and topological Mott insulator in Haldane-Hubbard model

Zhao-Long Gu, Kai Li, Jianxin Li

Topological phase transitions and the phase diagram of Haldane-Hubbard model are investigated using the variational cluster approach. With increasing the interaction strength, there are two successive topological phase transitions. The first is characterized by the closing and reopening of the single particle gap with the Chern number changing its sign, while the second is featured by the divergence of the topological Hamiltonian's spectrum with the Chern number changing from a non-zero integer to zero. The second topological phase transition is not accompanied with the single particle gap closing but is associated with the zeros of the single particle Green's function. Between these two topological phase transitions, there exists a non-magnetic topological Mott insulating phase with no gapless single particle edge states which cannot be adiabatically connected to any non-interacting Chern insulator.

Topological Mott insulator at quarter filling in the interacting Haldane model

Peizhi Mai, Benjamin E. Feldman, Philip Phillips

While the recent advances in topology have led to a classification scheme for electronic bands described by the standard theory of metals, a similar scheme has not emerged for strongly correlated systems such as Mott insulators in which a partially filled band carries no current. By including interactions in the topologically nontrivial Haldane model, we show that a quarter-filled state emerges with a nonzero Chern number provided the interactions are sufficiently large. We first motivate this result on physical grounds and then by two methods: Analytically by solving exactly a model in which interactions are local in momentum space and then numerically through the corresponding Hubbard model. All methods yield the same result: For sufficiently large interaction strengths, the quarter-filled Haldane model is a ferromagnetic topological Mott insulator with a Chern number of unity. Possible experimental realizations in cold-atom and solid-state systems are discussed.

Quantum phase transitions of topological insulators without gap closing

Stephan Rachel

We consider two-dimensional Chern insulators and time-reversal invariant topological insulators and discuss the effect of perturbations breaking either particle-number conservation or time-reversal symmetry. The appearance of trivial mass terms is expected to cause quantum phase transitions into trivial phases when such a perturbation overweighs the topological term. These phase transitions are usually associated with a bulk-gap closing. In contrast, the chiral Chern insulator is unaffected by particle-number breaking perturbations. Moreover, the [Formula: see text] topological insulator undergoes phase transitions into topologically trivial phases without bulk-gap closing in the presence of any of such perturbations. In certain cases, these phase transitions can be circumvented and the protection restored by another U(1) symmetry, e.g. due to spin conservation. These findings are discussed in the context of interacting topological insulators.

Characterization of Topological Insulators: Chern Numbers for Ground State Multiplet

Yasuhiro Hatsugai

We propose to use generic Chern numbers for a characterization of topological insulators. It is suitable for a numerical characterization of low dimensional quantum liquids where strong quantum fluctuations prevent from developing conventional orders. By twisting parameters of boundary conditions, the non-Abelian Chern number are defined for a few low lying states near the ground state in a finite system, which is a ground state multiplet with a possible (topological) degeneracy. We define the system as a topological insulator when energies of the multiplet are well separated from the above. Translational invariant twists up to a unitary equivalence are crutial to pick up only bulk properties without edge states. As a simple example, the setup is applied for a two-dimensional $XXZ$-spin system with an ising anisotropy where the ground state multiplet is composed of doubly almost degenerate states. It gives a vanishing Chern number due to a symmetry. Also Chern numbers for the generic fractional quantum Hall states are discussed shortly.
