Manifestation of a General Coherent State Superposition without Nonlinear Effects

Abstract

We report the formation of a general superposition of coherent states in exact analytical solution of the Schrodingers equatin for atom-photon interaction by taking into account the role of virtual photons. Despite some known superposition of quantum states, the general superposition state introduced in this letter constructed without any nonlinear effect. The Yurke- Stoler state and its special cases, the even and odd cat states, obtained as some simple examples of the method. A general experimental setup is proposed to realize a variety of superposition states.

A simple proposal for generation of various classes of cat-like state via quantum nonlinear optical processes

A Noury, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly

Abstract Generation of nonclassical states is a necessary requirement for all quantum science and technology protocols. In this regard, Schrödinger cat states, as quantum superpositions of mocroscopically distinguishable coherent states with equal amplitude and opposite phases, have been of great importance in recent years. In this paper, using some appropriate nonlinear optical media, a theoretical scheme is employed to generate various classes of cat-like states with the help of the connection between quantum and nonlinear optics. In fact, we have exploited a single simple method to produce even, odd and also Yurke-Stoler cat-like states by considering different input states such as coherent squeezed, squeezed coherent, photon-added coherent, pair coherent and trio coherent states. To achieve the purpose, we extensively use cross-Kerr interaction and its further generalizations to higher-orders. Projective measurement is the original conception behind the represented approach by which distinct types of nonclassical states are obtained. At last, we pay our attention to the unavoidable effect of field dissipation and show that in most of the above-studied states we may still achieve the cat-like states, however, with attenuated amplitudes.

Gazeau–Klauder cat states

Jerzy Dajka, J. Łuczka

Generalization of single-mode Schrödinger cat states is proposed, and their construction in terms of superposition of Gazeau–Klauder coherent states is presented. A comparative analysis of selected properties of this novel states for a nonlinear Kerr oscillator and the ‘traditional’ Schrödinger cats is given with emphasis on the photon statistics and the properties of non-cyclic geometric phase. Methods for producing optical coherent state superpositions

Scott Glancy, H. M. Vasconcelos

We discuss several methods to produce superpositions of optical coherent states (also known as “cat states”). Cat states have remarkable properties that could allow them to be powerful tools for quantum information processing and metrology. A number of proposals for how one can produce cat states have appeared in the literature in recent years. We describe these proposals and present a new simulation and analysis of them incorporating practical issues such as photon loss, detector inefficiency, and limited strength of nonlinear interactions. We also examine how each would perform in a realistic experiment.

The Quantum Properties of Coherent States Superposed with Squeezed States

Song Tong-Qiang

Based on the quantum superposition principle,we construct a new type of superposition composed of coherent state and squeezed state |φ=N(|α+eiφ|βg);and study its squeezing effect and photon anti-bunching effect. The results show that this kind of superposition exhibits fluent quantum properties. When superposed as even/odd coherent states, the superposition exhibits some properties of both even/odd coherent states and squeezed even/odd coherent states. The even/odd coherent and coherent state can be obtained as a special case when the squeezed factor r is zero.

Scheme for generating coherent-state superpositions with realistic cross-Kerr nonlinearity

Bing He, Mustansar Nadeem, János A. Bergou

We present a simple scheme using two identical cross-phase modulation processes in the decoherence environment to generate superpositions of two coherent states with the opposite phases, which are known as cat states. The scheme is shown to be robust against decoherence due to photon absorption losses and other errors, and the design of its experimental setup is also discussed.

Schrödinger's cat state of optical parallel universes

Yuqing Cui, Tianming Zhao, Rong-Xin Miao +2 more

Parallel worlds are imaginative ideas in quantum mechanics and cosmology. The superpositions of parallel worlds are novel states of quantum gravity and have no classical correspondences generally. In this letter, we investigate the superposition or the Schrödinger's cat state of optical parallel worlds, which could be realized in laboratory and may shed some light on the detection of parallel universes in a real world. We propose two realizable experimental schemes, which enable to explore the mysterious `parallel universes' by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The first one is based on an atomic ensemble in a superposition state, which is a fat Schrödinger's cat state. The second one is to prepare a photon in a superposition of different paths, where each path lies in an optical parallel universe.
