Abstract

Several important measures of quantum correlations of a state of a finite-dimensional composite system are defined as linear combinations of marginal entropies of this state. This paper is devoted to the infinite-dimensional generalizations of such quantities and to the analysis of their properties. We introduce the notion of faithful extension of a linear combination of marginal entropies and consider several concrete examples starting with the quantum mutual information and the quantum conditional entropy. Then we show that the conditional mutual information can be uniquely defined as a lower semicontinuous function on the set of all states of a tripartite infinite-dimensional system possessing all the basic properties valid in finite dimensions. Infinite-dimensional generalizations of some other measures of quantum correlations in multipartite quantum systems are also considered. It is shown that almost all of these generalized measures are globally lower semicontinuous and possess local continuity properties which essentially simplify their use in analysis of quantum systems. In the second part of the paper we consider applications of the general results of its first part, in particular, to the theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels and their capacities. We also show the existence of the Fawzi-Renner recovery channel reproducing marginal states for all tripartite states (including states with infinite marginal entropies) starting with the corresponding finite-dimensional result.

Approximation of composite quantum states: General results and applications

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

A universal approximation technique for analysis of different characteristics of states of composite infinite-dimensional quantum systems is proposed and used to prove general results on the properties of correlation and entanglement measures in such systems. Then these results are applied to the study of three important characteristics: the relative entropy of π-entanglement, the Rains bound (the unregularized and regularized versions of both characteristics are considered) and the conditional entanglement of mutual information. In particular, we analyze continuity and convexity properties of the above entanglement measures, prove several results simplifying their definitions and establish a finite-dimensional approximation property for these characteristics that allows us to generalize to the infinite-dimensional case the results proved in the finite-dimensional settings.

On Lower Semicontinuity of the Quantum Conditional Mutual Information and Its Corollaries

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Abstract It is shown that the recently established lower semicontinuity of the quantum conditional mutual information implies (in fact, is equivalent to) the lower semicontinuity of the loss of the quantum (conditional) mutual information under local channels considered as a function on the Cartesian product of the set of all states of a composite system and the sets of all local channels (equipped with the strong convergence topology). Some applications of this property are considered. New continuity conditions for the quantum mutual information and for the squashed entanglement in both bipartite and multipartite infinite-dimensional systems are obtained. It is proved, in particular, that the multipartite squashed entanglement of any countably indecomposable separable state with finite marginal entropies is equal to zero. Special continuity properties of the information gain of a quantum measurement with and without quantum side information are established that can be treated as robustness (stability) of these quantities with respect to perturbation of the measurement and the measured state.

Squashed entanglement in infinite dimensions

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

We analyse two possible definitions of the squashed entanglement in an infinite-dimensional bipartite system: direct translation of the finite-dimensional definition and its universal extension. It is shown that the both definitions produce the same lower semicontinuous entanglement measure possessing all basis properties of the squashed entanglement on the set of states having at least one finite marginal entropy. It is also shown that the second definition gives an adequate lower semicontinuous extension of this measure to all states of the infinite-dimensional bipartite system. A general condition relating continuity of the squashed entanglement to continuity of the quantum mutual information is proved and its corollaries are considered. Continuity bound for the squashed entanglement under the energy constraint on one subsystem is obtained by using the tight continuity bound for quantum conditional mutual information (proved in the Appendix by using Winter’s technique). It is shown that the same continuity bound is valid for the entanglement of formation. As a result the asymptotic continuity of the both entanglement measures under the energy constraint on one subsystem is proved.

Quantum Information Decoupling Beyond Finite Dimensions

Hayata Yamasaki

Quantum information decoupling is a pillar of quantum information theory, underlying quantum communication, error correction, and information recovery. However, its existing formulations rely on random unitary operations tied to finite-dimensional assumptions on quantum systems. Here we establish a decoupling framework for arbitrary separable, possibly infinite-dimensional systems. For finite-dimensional inputs and arbitrary separable reference/output systems, we derive error bounds on one-shot decoupling for completely positive maps in terms of sandwiched Rényi conditional entropies. For partial-trace decoupling with finite-dimensional references, the error exponent is optimal up to the known critical rate. To handle infinite-dimensional inputs, we assume finite entropy of the manipulated system. We construct finite-rank projections on independent and identically distributed (IID) states to restrict randomization to a projected finite-dimensional subspace, while ensuring high success probability by including auxiliary components in the discarded subsystem at asymptotically negligible cost. This leads to an infinite-dimensional IID partial-trace decoupling protocol achieving optimal asymptotic dimension rates. As an application, we construct an infinite-dimensional quantum-state-merging protocol, a mother protocol of quantum information theory. Under finite entropy of Alice's marginal, it achieves the same quantum-communication and total-cost rates as in finite dimensions, governed by mutual information and conditional entropy. These results show that the operational interpretation of entropic quantities through these achievable rates constitutes a universal principle beyond finite dimensions. More broadly, our framework provides foundational tools for exploring quantum information regardless of whether we model the physical world using finite- or infinite-dimensional spaces.

On Local Continuity of Characteristics of Composite Quantum Systems

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Abstract General methods of local continuity analysis of characteristics of infinite-dimensional composite quantum systems are considered. A new approximation technique for obtaining local continuity conditions for various characteristics of quantum systems is proposed and described in detail. This technique is used to prove several general results (a Simon-type dominated convergence theorem, a theorem on the preservation of continuity under convex mixtures, etc.). Local continuity conditions are derived for the following characteristics of composite quantum systems: the quantum conditional entropy, the quantum (conditional) mutual information, the one-way classical correlation and its regularization, the quantum discord and its regularization, the entanglement of formation and its regularization, and the constrained Holevo capacity of a partial trace and its regularization.
