Abstract

We analyse two possible definitions of the squashed entanglement in an infinite-dimensional bipartite system: direct translation of the finite-dimensional definition and its universal extension. It is shown that the both definitions produce the same lower semicontinuous entanglement measure possessing all basis properties of the squashed entanglement on the set of states having at least one finite marginal entropy. It is also shown that the second definition gives an adequate lower semicontinuous extension of this measure to all states of the infinite-dimensional bipartite system. A general condition relating continuity of the squashed entanglement to continuity of the quantum mutual information is proved and its corollaries are considered. Continuity bound for the squashed entanglement under the energy constraint on one subsystem is obtained by using the tight continuity bound for quantum conditional mutual information (proved in the Appendix by using Winter’s technique). It is shown that the same continuity bound is valid for the entanglement of formation. As a result the asymptotic continuity of the both entanglement measures under the energy constraint on one subsystem is proved.

On Lower Semicontinuity of the Quantum Conditional Mutual Information and Its Corollaries

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Abstract It is shown that the recently established lower semicontinuity of the quantum conditional mutual information implies (in fact, is equivalent to) the lower semicontinuity of the loss of the quantum (conditional) mutual information under local channels considered as a function on the Cartesian product of the set of all states of a composite system and the sets of all local channels (equipped with the strong convergence topology). Some applications of this property are considered. New continuity conditions for the quantum mutual information and for the squashed entanglement in both bipartite and multipartite infinite-dimensional systems are obtained. It is proved, in particular, that the multipartite squashed entanglement of any countably indecomposable separable state with finite marginal entropies is equal to zero. Special continuity properties of the information gain of a quantum measurement with and without quantum side information are established that can be treated as robustness (stability) of these quantities with respect to perturbation of the measurement and the measured state.

No cardinality bound for squashed entanglement

Rabsan Galib Ahmed, Graeme Smith

Squashed entanglement is an additive bipartite entanglement measure. For a state $ρ_{AB}$, it is defined as the infimum of all conditional mutual information $I(A:B\mid E)$ evaluated on extensions $ρ_{ABE}$. It was unresolved whether there is a bound on the dimension of the conditioning system, $E$, needed for this optimization. We show that no such cardinality bound is possible. Explicitly, we find that the squashed entanglement for a partially dephased Bell pair on two qubits cannot be achieved for any finite dimensional extension $E$. A crucial ingredient of this proof is a direct sum step, which in a sense, symmetrizes two purifying systems while keeping the conditional mutual information unchanged and the coherence no worse.

Uniform continuity bounds for characteristics of multipartite quantum systems

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

We consider universal methods for obtaining (uniform) continuity bounds for characteristics of multipartite quantum systems. We pay special attention to infinite-dimensional multipartite quantum systems under the energy constraints. By these methods, we obtain continuity bounds for several important characteristics of a multipartite quantum state: the quantum (conditional) mutual information, the squashed entanglement, the c-squashed entanglement, and the conditional entanglement of mutual information. The continuity bounds for the multipartite quantum mutual information are asymptotically tight for large dimension/energy. The obtained results are used to prove the asymptotic continuity of the n-partite squashed entanglement, the c-squashed entanglement, and the conditional entanglement of mutual information under the energy constraints.

Measures of correlations in infinite-dimensional quantum systems

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Several important measures of quantum correlations of a state of a finite-dimensional composite system are defined as linear combinations of marginal entropies of this state. This paper is devoted to the infinite-dimensional generalizations of such quantities and to the analysis of their properties. We introduce the notion of faithful extension of a linear combination of marginal entropies and consider several concrete examples starting with the quantum mutual information and the quantum conditional entropy. Then we show that the conditional mutual information can be uniquely defined as a lower semicontinuous function on the set of all states of a tripartite infinite-dimensional system possessing all the basic properties valid in finite dimensions. Infinite-dimensional generalizations of some other measures of quantum correlations in multipartite quantum systems are also considered. It is shown that almost all of these generalized measures are globally lower semicontinuous and possess local continuity properties which essentially simplify their use in analysis of quantum systems. In the second part of the paper we consider applications of the general results of its first part, in particular, to the theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels and their capacities. We also show the existence of the Fawzi-Renner recovery channel reproducing marginal states for all tripartite states (including states with infinite marginal entropies) starting with the corresponding finite-dimensional result.

Approximation of multipartite quantum states: revised version with new applications

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

An universal approximation technique for analysis of different characteristics of states of composite infinite-dimensional quantum systems is proposed and used to prove general results concerning the properties of correlation and entanglement measures in such systems. Then these results are applied to the study of three important characteristics: the relative entropy of $π$-entanglement, the Rains bound (the unregularized and regularized versions of both characteristics are considered) and the conditional entanglement of mutual information. In particular, we analyse continuity and convexity properties of the above entanglement measures, prove several results simplifying their definitions and establish a finite-dimensional approximation property for these characteristics that allows us to generalize to the infinite-dimensional case the results proved in the finite-dimensional settings.

Approximation of multipartite quantum states and the relative entropy of entanglement

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Special approximation technique for analysis of different characteristics of states of multipartite infinite-dimensional quantum systems is proposed and applied to study of the relative entropy of entanglement and its regularisation. We prove several results about analytical properties of the multipartite relative entropy of entanglement and its regularization (the lower semicontinuity on wide class of states, the uniform continuity under the energy constraints, etc.). We establish a finite-dimensional approximation property for the relative entropy of entanglement and its regularization that allows to generalize to the infinite-dimensional case the results proved in the finite-dimensional settings.
