Ultrashort pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium: soliton formation and inelastic collisions

Abstract

Using numerical simulations, we study propagation of ultrashort light pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium. There are two main issues in our study. The first one concerns the transient process of self-induced transparency soliton formation, in particular, the compression of the pulse which seems to be more effective in the case of homogeneous broadening. The second question deals with the collisions of counter-propagating solitons. It is shown that the level of inhomogeneous broadening has a substantial effect on the elasticity of such collisions.

Femtosecond pulses in a dense two-level medium: Spectral transformations, transient processes, and collisional dynamics

Denis V. Novitsky

Propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in a dense resonant medium is considered in the semiclassical limit. In our analysis, we place emphasis on several main points. First, we study transformations of spectra in the process of pulse propagation and interactions with another pulse. The second point involves the transient processes (including pulse compression) connected with self-induced transparency soliton formation inside the medium. Finally, the third aspect is the study of collisions of co- and counterpropagating pulses in the medium. In the last case, the investigation of symmetric and asymmetric collisions shows the possibility of effectively controlling the parameters of transmitted radiation.

Controlled absorption and all-optical diode action due to collisions of self-induced-transparency solitons

Denis V. Novitsky

We study inelastic collisions of counterpropagating self-induced transparency solitons in a homogeneously broadened two-level medium. The energy of the pulse can be almost totally absorbed in the medium due to asymmetric collision with a properly chosen control pulse. The medium state thus prepared demonstrates the property of an all-optical diode which transmits pulses from one direction and blocks from another. The saturation process of a controlled absorption effect, local-field correction influence, and the parameter ranges for the diode action are studied as well.

Raman amplification of ultrashort light pulses in inhomogeneously broadened three-level systems

V. V. Kozlov, Elena V. Kozlova

In the limit of pulse durations that are shorter than the characteristic times of atomic decays, the dynamics of the propagation of a probe light pulse under the action of a driving pulse in the form of a self-induced transparency soliton applied to the adjacent transition of the V -scheme is considered. For a three-level absorber, it is shown that, in the absence of two-photon inhomogeneous broadening, the effect of soliton-induced transparency (SOIT) for the probe field takes place, which consists of the probe pulse undergoing forced localization by the driving pulse and propagates further without a change in the energy or shape. This type of transparency has no threshold with respect to both the energy and the area and is observed for arbitrarily weak pulses. The SOIT effect disappears in the presence of a two-photon inhomogeneous broad-ening. The effect of Raman amplification in a three-level amplifier with the Raman population inversion is considered. It is demonstrated that, under the action of the two-photon inhomogeneous broadening, the effect of Raman amplification becomes a threshold effect. The broader the two-photon inhomogeneous contour, the larger the Raman inversion required to initiate generation.

Transient processes in propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level medium

Махвиладзе Тариэль Михайлович, I. G. Sinitsyn, Leonid A. Shelepin

An analysis is made of the effects associated with the propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level resonance medium. It is shown that the dynamics of the changes in the pulse during its propagation differs considerably from the usual self-induced transparency effect in a two-level medium. It is predicted theoretically that there should be a propagation regime accompanied by periodic variation of the pulse shape.

Coherent effects in ultrashort pulse propagation through an optically thick three-level medium

V. V. Kozlov, Evald E. Fradkin

A theoretical study is made of the propagation of a weak ultrashort pulse through an optically thick, inhomogeneously broadened three-level medium of the V configuration driven by a self-induced transparency pulse on the coupled transition. The weak coherent pulse experiences a greatly enhanced transparency. The new transparency effect is discussed in detail and the results are found to be in good agreement with recent experimental observations.

Soliton formation in a resonant amplifying—absorbing medium

Yury V. Kistenev, Yu. N. Ponomarev, Alexander V. Shapovalov

Self-formation of one or several soliton-like pulses from a nonsoliton powerful laser pulse during its propagation through a two-component resonant amplifying—absorbing medium with an energy dissipation channel is studied numerically. Both components of the medium are simulated by two-level particles. Homogeneous mixtures of these components and media with consecutive amplifying and absorbing layers are considered. A qualitative analysis of the results is based on a simplified model of the process of soliton-like pulse propagation.
