Detuning-Controlled Internal Oscillations in an Exciton-Polariton Condensate

Abstract

We theoretically analyze exciton-photon oscillatory dynamics within a homogenous polariton gas in the presence of energy detuning between the cavity and quantum well modes. Whereas pure Rabi oscillations consist of the particle exchange between the photon and exciton states in the polariton system without any oscillations of the phases of the two subcondensates, we demonstrate that any nonzero detuning results in oscillations of the relative phase of the photon and exciton macroscopic wave functions. Different initial conditions reveal a variety of behaviors of the relative phase between the two condensates, and a crossover from Rabi-like to Josephson-like oscillations is predicted.

Dynamic stabilization of a polariton Rabi oscillator in the ground and inverted stationary states

Nina S. Voronova, Andrei A. Elistratov, Yu. E. Lozovik

The reported work describes different regimes of exciton-polariton oscillatory dynamics in a microcavity, in the conservative case as well as in the presence of continuous-wave pumping from the high-energy excitonic reservoir. Accounting for exciton-photon energy detuning, linear and non-linear decay, gain, and interactions, we discuss the influence of different ingredients of the system on the dynamics in conservative and non-conservative cases, and show the existence of non-trivial regimes reminiscent of internal Josephson effect, van der Pol oscillations, and the inverted Kapitza pendulum. Conditions of experimental observation of the predicted effects are considered.

Polaritonic Rabi and Josephson Oscillations

Amir Rahmani, Fabrice P. Laussy

The dynamics of coupled condensates is a wide-encompassing problem with relevance to superconductors, BECs in traps, superfluids, etc. Here, we provide a unified picture of this fundamental problem that includes i) detuning of the free energies, ii) different self-interaction strengths and iii) finite lifetime of the modes. At such, this is particularly relevant for the dynamics of polaritons, both for their internal dynamics between their light and matter constituents, as well as for the more conventional dynamics of two spatially separated condensates. Polaritons are short-lived, interact only through their material fraction and are easily detuned. At such, they bring several variations to their atomic counterpart. We show that the combination of these parameters results in important twists to the phenomenology of the Josephson effect, such as the behaviour of the relative phase (running or oscillating) or the occurence of self-trapping. We undertake a comprehensive stability analysis of the fixed points on a normalized Bloch sphere, that allows us to provide a generalized criterion to identify the Rabi and Josephson regimes in presence of detuning and decay.

Phase diagram of microcavity exciton-polariton condensates

Dinh-Hoi Bui, Van-Nham Phan

In this work, we study the exciton-polariton condensate phase transition in a microcavity matter-light system in which electron-hole Coulomb interaction and matter-light coupling effects are treated on an equal footing. In the framework of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation applying the two-dimensional exciton-polariton model, we derive the self-consistent equations determining simultaneously the excitonic and the photonic condenstate order parameters. In the thermal-equilibrium limit, we find a condensed state of the exciton-polariton systems and phase diagrams are then constructed. At a given low temperature, the condensate by its nature shows a crossover from an excitonic to a polaritonic and finally photonic condensed state as the excitation density increases at large detuning. Without the detuning, the excitonic condensed state disappears whereas the polaritonic or photonic phases dominate. The crossover is also found by lowering the Coulomb interaction at a finite matter-light coupling. Lowering the Coulomb interaction or increasing the temperature, the excitonic Mott transition occurs, at which the exciton-polariton condensates dissociate to free electron-hole/photon. Depending on temperature and excitation density, the phase transition of the exciton-polariton condensates is also addressed in signatures of photoluminescence mapping to the photonic momentum distribution.

Quantum Beats of a Macroscopic Polariton Condensate in Real Space

R. V. Cherbunin, A. D. Liubomirov, Stella Kavokina +3 more

We experimentally observe harmonic oscillations in a bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined within an elliptical trap. These oscillations arise from quantum beats between two size-quantized states of the condensate, split in energy due to the trap’s ellipticity. By precisely targeting specific spots inside the trap with nonresonant laser pulses, we control frequency, amplitude, and phase of these quantum beats. The condensate wave function dynamics is visualized on a streak camera and mapped to the Bloch sphere, demonstrating Hadamard and Pauli-Z operations. We conclude that a qubit based on a superposition of these two polariton states would exhibit a coherence time exceeding the lifetime of an individual exciton-polariton by at least two orders of magnitude.

Nonlinear dynamics of an optical parametric exciton–polariton oscillator in a microcavity

Vasilieva, O.F., Васильева, О., Hadji, P.I. +1 more

The system of nonlinear evolution equations was obtained for describing the time evolution of densities of pump, signal, and idler microcavity polaritons. It was shown that the period and amplitude of oscillations of the polariton densities essentially depend on the initial densities of polaritons, initial phase difference, and resonance detuning. For the definite relation between the parameters, the aperiodic evolution of the system is also possible; it represents the conversion of only the part of pump polaritons, by which the evolution of the system is finished. The significant dependence of the period and amplitude of polariton oscillations on the initial phase difference evidences the possibility of the phase controlling of the polariton dynamics. The damping of the system of coherent polaritons leads to the oscillatory decay of polariton density in time, the rate of which is defined by the polariton damping constants.

On the mechanism of the maintenance of Rabi oscillations in the system of exciton polaritons in a microcavity

Sevak Demirchyan, Igor Yu. Chestnov, Sergei M Arakelyan +2 more

A physical mechanism of the implementation of undamped Rabi oscillations in the system of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity in the presence of nonresonant pumping has been proposed. Various mechanisms of the stimulated scattering of excitons from the reservoir have been considered. It has been shown that undamped oscillations of the population of the photon component of the condensate can be caused by the feeding of a coherent Rabi oscillator owing to the pair scattering of excitons from the reservoir to the ground state. The effect should be observed in spite of a more intense relaxation of polaritons of the upper branch observed experimentally.
