Exact solitons and manifold mixing dynamics in the spin-orbit–coupled spinor condensates

Abstract

We derive exact static as well as moving solitonic solutions to the one-dimensional spin-orbit–coupled F = 1 Bose-Einstein condensates. The static polar soliton is shown to be the ground state by the imaginary-time evolution method. It shows a helical modulation of the order parameter due to the spin-orbit coupling. In particular, the moving soliton exhibits a periodic oscillation among the particle numbers of the hyperfine states. We further explore the temporal evolution of the static polar soliton and find that the spin-polarization exhibits dynamical oscillations. This disappearance and re-emergence of the ferromagnetic state indicates the mixing of the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic manifolds.

Composite solitons in SU (3) spin–orbit-coupling Bose gases

Hong-Xia Yue, Yong-Kai Liu

Abstract We study solitons in a spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates with SU(3) spin–orbit coupling. We obtain the ground state and the metastable solution for solitons with attractive interactions by the imaginary-time evolution method. Compared with the SU(2) spin–orbit coupling, it is found that the solitons in SU (3) spin–orbit coupling show a new feature due to breaking the symmetry. The solitons called the composite solitons have mixing manifolds of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. This has stimulated people to study the topological excitation properties of SU (3) spin–orbit coupling and it is expected to find new quantum phases.

Soliton collisions in spin–orbit coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates

Juan-Juan Qi, Dun Zhao, Wu‐Ming Liu

Abstract We investigate analytically the effects of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) for the dynamics of soliton collisions in spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). Applying the non-standard Hirota’s bilinear method, we derive some exact one- and two-soliton solutions for the one-dimensional system of a spin–orbit coupled spin-1 BEC, which clearly shows how the dynamics of the solitons in spinor BECs can be engineered by SOC. Under SOC, the soliton collisions of ferromagnetic-polar type, ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic type and polar-polar type are discussed in details. Comparisons for the soliton states between the systems with and without SOC are displayed, a remarkable phenomenon is that the SOC can lead to the split of a soliton.

Soliton oscillation driven by spin-orbit coupling in spinor condensates

Decheng Ma, Chenglong Jia

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of polar bright soliton under the influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in spin-1 three component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Periodically oscillating dark-bright-dark solitons are found to be induced by the SOC with their multifrequency oscillations jointly determined by the interparticle nonlinear interaction and the SOC strength. Explicit formulas are provided to identify these frequencies, which are in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. A linear Zeeman interaction is further introduced to break the time-reversal symmetry and change the polarity of the spinor BECs, which results in the periodic transition of the system from polar state to ferromagnetic state.

Manifold Mixing in the Temporal Evolution of a Spin-1 Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

Yun-Tak Oh, Panjin Kim, Jin-Hong Park +1 more

Hydrodynamics of the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated without restriction of its allowed manifold to either the ferromagnetic or the antiferromagnetic phase. Mixing of the two manifolds is found to be a generic feature in the temporal evolution of the condensate, regardless of the sign and strength of the spin-dependent interaction. Hydrodynamic theory is developed based on a new representation of the spin-1 condensate wave function as a linear combination of the well-known wave functions specific to antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic manifolds only. Dynamical constraints unique to each submanifold are derived for the first time, demonstrating that efforts to write down hydrodynamic theory in one specific manifold are generally invalid. Certain exceptions, such as a uniform spiral state in the antiferromagnetic manifold, are shown to sustain dynamical evolution within the same manifold over time.

Two types of ground-state bright solitons in a coupled harmonically trapped pseudo-spin polarization Bose–Einstein condensate

T.F. Xu

We study two types of bright solitons in an attractive Bose–Einstein condensate with a spin–orbit interaction. By solving the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the variational method and the imaginary time evolution method, fundamental properties of solitons are carefully investigated in different parameter regimes. It is shown that the detuning between the Raman beam and energy states of the atoms dominates the ground state type and spin polarization strength. The soliton dynamics is also studied for various moving velocities for zero and nonzero detuning cases. We find that the shape of individual component solitons can be maintained when the moving speed of solitons is low and the detuning is small in the coupled harmonically trapped pseudo-spin polarization Bose–Einstein condensate.

Moving bright solitons in a pseudo-spin polarization Bose–Einstein condensate

We study the moving bright solitons in the weak attractive Bose–Einstein condensate with a spin–orbit interaction. By solving the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the variational method and the imaginary time evolution method, two kinds of solitons (plane wave soliton and stripe solitons) are found in different parameter regions. It is shown that the soliton speed dominates its structure. The detuning between the Raman beam and energy states of the atoms decides the spin polarization strength of the system. The soliton dynamics is also studied for various moving speed and we find that the shape of individual components can be kept when the speed of soliton is low.
