Composite solitons in SU (3) spin–orbit-coupling Bose gases

Abstract

Abstract We study solitons in a spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates with SU(3) spin–orbit coupling. We obtain the ground state and the metastable solution for solitons with attractive interactions by the imaginary-time evolution method. Compared with the SU(2) spin–orbit coupling, it is found that the solitons in SU (3) spin–orbit coupling show a new feature due to breaking the symmetry. The solitons called the composite solitons have mixing manifolds of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. This has stimulated people to study the topological excitation properties of SU (3) spin–orbit coupling and it is expected to find new quantum phases.

Exact solitons and manifold mixing dynamics in the spin-orbit–coupled spinor condensates

Yong-Kai Liu, Shi-Jie Yang

We derive exact static as well as moving solitonic solutions to the one-dimensional spin-orbit–coupled F = 1 Bose-Einstein condensates. The static polar soliton is shown to be the ground state by the imaginary-time evolution method. It shows a helical modulation of the order parameter due to the spin-orbit coupling. In particular, the moving soliton exhibits a periodic oscillation among the particle numbers of the hyperfine states. We further explore the temporal evolution of the static polar soliton and find that the spin-polarization exhibits dynamical oscillations. This disappearance and re-emergence of the ferromagnetic state indicates the mixing of the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic manifolds.

Double-quantum spin vortices in SU(3) spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases

Wei Han, Xiao-Fei Zhang, Shu-Wei Song +4 more

We show that double-quantum spin vortices, which are characterized by doubly quantized circulating spin currents and unmagnetized filled cores, can exist in the ground states of SU(3) spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases. It is found that the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling and spin-exchange interaction play important roles in determining the ground-state phase diagram. In the case of effective ferromagnetic spin interaction, the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling induces a threefold degeneracy to the magnetized ground state, while in the antiferromagnetic spin interaction case, the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling breaks the ordinary phase rule of spinor Bose gases and allows the spontaneous emergence of double-quantum spin vortices. This exotic topological defect is in stark contrast to the singly quantized spin vortices observed in existing experiments and can be readily observed by the current magnetization-sensitive phase-contrast imaging technique.

Ground states, solitons and spin textures in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Shu-Wei Song, Lin Wen, Chao-Fei Liu +2 more

We present an overview of our recent theoretical studies on the quantum phenomena of the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, including the phase diagram, soliton solutions and the formation of the topological spin textures. A brief exploration of the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the ground-state properties is given. We put forward proposals by using the transmission spectra of an optical cavity to probe the quantum ground states: the ferromagnetic and polar phases. Quasi-one-dimension solitons and ring dark solitons are studied. It is predicted that characteristics of the magnetic solitons in optical lattice can be tuned by controlling the long-range light-induced and static magnetic dipoledipole interactions; solutions of single-component magnetic and single-, two-, three-components polar solitons are found; ring dark solitons in spin-1 condensates are predicted to live longer lifetimes than that in their scalar counterparts. In the formation of spin textures, we have considered the theoretical model of a rapidly quenched and fast rotating trapped spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, whose dynamics can be studied by solving the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Spontaneous generation of nontrivial topological defects, such as the hexagonal lattice skyrmions and square lattice of half-quantized vortices was predicted. In particular, crystallization of merons (half skyrmions) can be generated in the presence of spin-orbit coupling.

Stable Solitons in Three Dimensional Free Space without the Ground State: Self-Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Yong-Chang Zhang, Zheng-Wei Zhou, Boris A. Malomed +1 more

By means of variational methods and systematic numerical analysis, we demonstrate the existence of metastable solitons in three dimensional (3D) free space, in the context of binary atomic condensates combining contact self-attraction and spin-orbit coupling, which can be engineered by available experimental techniques. Depending on the relative strength of the intra- and intercomponent attraction, the stable solitons feature a semivortex or mixed-mode structure. In spite of the fact that the local cubic self-attraction gives rise to the supercritical collapse in 3D, and hence the setting produces no true ground state, the solitons are stable against small perturbations, motion, and collisions.

Moving Matter-Wave Solitons in Spin—Orbit Coupled Bose—Einstein Condensates

Yue Li, Ju-Kui Xue

We investigate the moving matter-wave solitons in spin—orbit coupled Bose—Einstein condensates (BECs) by a perturbation method. Starting with the one-dimensional Gross—Pitaevskii equations, we derive a new KdV-like equation to which an approximate solution is obtained by assuming weak Raman coupling and strong spin—orbit coupling. The derivation of the KdV-like equation may be useful to understand the properties of solitons excitation in spin—orbit coupled BECs. We find different types of moving solitons: dark—bright, bright—bright and dark—dark solitons. Interestingly, moving dark—dark soliton for attractive intra- and inter-species interactions is found, which depends on the Raman coupling. The amplitude and velocity of the moving solitons strongly depend on the Raman coupling and spin—orbit coupling.

Three-dimensional vortex-bright solitons in a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 condensate

Sandeep Gautam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

We demonstrate stable and metastable vortex-bright solitons in a three-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled three-component hyperfine spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) using numerical solution and variational approximation of a mean-field model. The spin-orbit coupling provides attraction to form vortex-bright solitons in both attractive and repulsive spinor BECs. The ground state of these vortex-bright solitons is axially symmetric for weak polar interaction. For a sufficiently strong ferromagnetic interaction, we observe the emergence of a fully asymmetric vortex-bright soliton as the ground state. We also numerically investigate moving solitons. The present mean-field model is not Galilean invariant, and we use a Galilean-transformed mean-field model for generating the moving solitons.
