Magnetocaloric effect in the spin-1/2 chain with competing interactions

Abstract

We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with competing interactions. We computed the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin chain in the thermodynamic limit. This is obtained by means of the solution of a set of non-linear integral equations, which describes the thermodynamics of the model. We also provide results for the entropy S and the isentropes in the ( H , T ) plane.

The magnetocaloric effect in integrable spin-schains

G A P Ribeiro

We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic high spin chain. We present an exact computation of the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin- s chain in the thermodynamical limit by means of Bethe ansatz techniques and the quantum transfer matrix approach. We have also calculated the entropy S and the isentropes in the ( H , T ) plane. We have been able to identify the quantum critical points H c ( s ) = 2/( s + 1/2) looking at the isentropes and/or the characteristic behaviour of the Grüneisen parameter.

Magnetocaloric effect in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the four-spin interaction

Lucia Gálisová

The magnetocaloric effect in the symmetric spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the Ising four-spin interaction is investigated using the generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformation and the transfermatrix technique. The entropy and the Grüneisen parameter, which closely relate to the magnetocaloric effect, are exactly calculated to compare the capability of the system to cool in the vicinity of different field-induced ground-state phase transitions during the adiabatic demagnetization.

Magnetocaloric effect in quantum spin-s chains

A. Honecker, Stefan Weßel

We compute the entropy of antiferromagnetic quantum spin-s chains in an external magnetic field using exact diagonalization and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The magnetocaloric effect, i. e., temperature variations during adiabatic field changes, can be derived from the isentropes.First, we focus on the example of the spins = 1 chain and show that one can cool by closing the Haldane gap with a magnetic field. We then move to quantum spin-s chains and demonstrate linear scaling with s close to the saturation field. In passing, we propose a new method to compute many low-lying excited states using the Lanczos recursion.

Exact calculation of the magnetocaloric effect in the spin- 12 XXZ chain

Christian Trippe, A. Honecker, Andreas Klümper +1 more

We calculate the entropy and cooling rate of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $XXZ$ chain under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the quantum transfer-matrix technique and nonlinear integral equations. The limiting case of the Ising chain (corresponding to infinitely large anisotropy) is presented for comparison. Our exact results for the Heisenberg chain are used as a cross-check for the numerical exact diagonalization as well as quantum Monte Carlo simulations and allow us to benchmark the numerical methods. Close to field-induced quantum phase transitions we observe a large magnetocaloric effect. Furthermore, we verify universal low-temperature power laws in the cooling rate and entropy, in particular, linear scaling of entropy with temperature $T$ in the gapless Luttinger-liquid state and scaling as $\sqrt{T}$ at field-induced transitions to gapped phases.

Thermodynamics of quantum spin chains with competing interactions

T S Tavares, G A P Ribeiro

We consider integrable quantum spin chains with competing interactions. We apply the quantum transfer matrix approach to these spin chains. This allows us to derive a set of nonlinear integral equations for the thermodynamics of these spin chains. We provide numerical solutions of these integral equations for the entropy as a function of magnetic field, temperature and the coupling constant. In addition we describe, at low but finite temperature, the possible scenarios for the ground state diagram for high-spin chain and longer range interchain interactions.

Renormalization of magnetic chains in a field: Isothermal magnetocaloric effect

J. Szṅajd

Motivated by the recently developed [T. Plackowski et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 73, 2755 (2002)] technique for measuring isothermal magnetocaloric coefficient $({M}_{T})$, we revisit the thermodynamic properties of coupled spin chains in a field. The coupled Ising antiferromagnetic chains in two and three dimensions, quantum $XY$ chain in a transverse field, and Heisenberg chain are considered. For the Ising model the shift of the critical temperature under magnetic field and dependence of ${M}_{T}$ on interchain coupling are found. The field dependence of ${M}_{T}$ for several models is presented. It is demonstrated that in the disordered phase in the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, ${M}_{T}$ changes sign at some value of the magnetic field. Generally, ${M}_{T}$ is negative if magnetic field competes with a short-range order, and consequently it can be an indicator of the change in the short-range correlation.
