Interferometric Measurement of the Current-Phase Relationship of a Superfluid Weak Link

Abstract

Superfluid Bose-Einstein condensates have been shaped into circuits that resemble practical superconducting circuits. A new technique measures the current in these circuits and characterizes one of its basic components, called a ``weak link.''

In recent experiments with a ring-shaped Bose Einstein condensate, we have directly measured resistive flow across a weak link. In addition, we have also developed a new technique to directly measure the current-phase relationship of weak links.

While recent theoretical and experimental evidence have indicated that many commonly used superconducting weak links might have distinctly nonsinusoiual current-phase relations, precise measurement of these relations has been difficult to realize. Now a high resolution technique has been developed for the measurement of current-phase relations of weak links. This technique was used to determine the current-phase relations of various weak link structures including point contacts, thin film microbridges and proximity effect bridges. (GRA)

Experiments with a superfluid BEC ring

This dissertation presents multiple results of our experiments with ring-shaped 23Na Bose-Einstein condensates. First, we measure the effect of temperature on the lifetime of quantized, persistent currents. We find that the persistent current lifetime decreases when the temperature is increased. We also extract the critical velocity by measuring the size of hysteresis loops. The critical velocity is found to be a strong function of temperature. Second, we implement a new technique of measuring the circulation state of a persistent current in-situ, which is minimally-destructive. This technique uses the Doppler effect. We then measure the current-phase relation of a weak link inserted in the ring-shaped superfluid and measure the excitation spectrum of the ring-shaped superfluid. Finally, we study the dynamics of rapidly expanding rings, and explore the analogy between our experimental system and the expansion of the universe.
