Abstract

We measure the dispersion relation, gap, and magnetic moment of a magnon in the ferromagnetic F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of (87)Rb. From the dispersion relation we measure an average effective mass 1.033(2)(stat)(10)(sys) times the atomic mass, as determined by interfering standing and running coherent magnon waves within the dense and trapped condensed gas. The measured mass is higher than theoretical predictions of mean-field and beyond-mean-field Beliaev theory for a bulk spinor Bose gas with s-wave contact interactions. We observe a magnon energy gap of h × 2.5(1)(stat)(2)(sys) Hz, which is consistent with the predicted effect of magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. These dipolar interactions may also account for the high magnon mass. The effective magnetic moment of -1.04(2)(stat)(8)(sys) times the atomic magnetic moment is consistent with mean-field theory.

Energy shift of magnons in a ferromagnetic spinor-dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

Hiroki Saito, Masaya Kunimi

Motivated by the recent experiment performed by the Berkeley group [G. E. Marti et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 165301 (2014)], we consider the dynamics of magnons in a spin-1 spinor-dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, using mean-field theory. We show that the effective mass of a magnon is increased by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, as observed in the experiment. The magnon mass is also decreased by changing the direction of the magnetic field. The increase and decrease in the magnon mass manifest themselves in the acceleration of the magnons.

Scalar and Spinor Excitations in a Ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein Condensate

G. Edward Marti

At low temperatures, the thermodynamic properties of a many-body system are determined by the low energy excursions from the ground state. In quantum degenerate rubidium, the low energy excitations are phonons—phase and density modes—and magnons—spin modes. This thesis reports on the construction of an ultracold rubidium apparatus and techniques to create and image phonons and magnons. We propose and study matter wave interferometry of phonons in a ring trap as a potential rotation sensor in a compact sensor. Precision measurements of coherent magnons allow us to determine the magnon dispersion relation, including a gap induced by magnetic dipole-dipole interactions.

Condensing Magnons in a Degenerate Ferromagnetic Spinor Bose Gas

Fang Fang, Ryan Olf, Shun Wu +2 more

We observe the quasicondensation of magnon excitations within an F=1 ^{87}Rb spinor Bose-Einstein condensed gas. Magnons are pumped into a ferromagnetically ordered gas, allowed to equilibrate to a nondegenerate distribution, and then cooled evaporatively at near-constant net longitudinal magnetization, whereupon they condense. The critical magnon number, spatial distribution, and momentum distribution indicate that magnons condense in a potential that is uniform within the volume of the ferromagnetic condensate. The macroscopic transverse magnetization produced by the degenerate magnon gas remains inhomogeneous within the ∼10 s equilibration time accessed in our experiment, and includes signatures of Mermin-Ho spin textures that appear as phase singularities in the magnon quasicondensate wave function.

Coherent Spin Dynamics of a Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate

M.-S. Chang

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a phenomenon in which identical bosons occupy the same quantum state below a certain critical temperature. A hallmark of BEC is the coherence between particles every particle shares the same quantum wavefunction and phase. This coherence has been demonstrated for the external (motional) degrees of freedom of the atomic condensates by interfering two condensates. In this thesis, the coherence is shown to extend to the internal spin degrees of freedom of a spin-1 Bose gas evidenced by the observed coherent and reversible spin-changing collisions. The observed coherent dynamics are analogous to Josephson oscillations in weakly connected superconductors and represent a type of matter-wave four-wave mixing. Control of the coherent evolution of the system using magnetic fields is also demonstrated. The studies on spinor condensates begin by creating spinor condensates directly using all-optical approaches that were first developed in our laboratory. All-optical formation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in 1D optical lattice and single focus trap geometries are developed and presented. These techniques offer considerable flexibility and speed compared to magnetic trap approaches, and the trapping potential can be essentially spin-independent and are ideally suited for studying spinor condensates. Using condensates with well-defined initial non-equilibrium spin configuration, spin mixing of F = 1 and F = 2 spinor condensates of rubidium-87 atoms confined in an optical trap is observed. The equilibrium spin configuration in the F = 1 manifold confirms that 87Rb is ferromagnetic. The coherent spinor dynamics are demonstrated by initiating spin mixing deterministically with a non-stationary spin population configuration. Finally, the interplay between the coherent spin mixing and spatial dynamics in spin-1 condensates with ferromagnetic interactions is investigated.

Observation of a strongly ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

SeungJung Huh, Kyungtae Kim, Kiryang Kwon +1 more

We report the observation of strongly ferromagnetic F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of 7 Li atoms. The condensates are generated in an optical dipole trap without using magnetic Feshbach resonances, so that the condensates have internal spin degrees of freedom.Studying the nonequilibrium spin dynamics, we have measured the ferromagnetic spin interaction energy and determined the s-wave scattering length difference among total spin f channels to be a f =2a f =0 = -18(3) Bohr radius. This strong collision-channel dependence leads to a large variation in the condensate size with different spin composition. We were able to excite a radial monopole mode after a spin-flip transition between the |m F = 0 and |m F = 1 spin states. From the experiments, we estimated the scattering length ratio a f =2 /a f =0 = 0.27(6), and determined a f =2 = 7(2) and a f =0 = 25(5) Bohr radii, respectively. The results indicate the spin-dependent interaction energy of our system is as large as 46% of the condensate chemical potential.

Coherent optics of magnon waves in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Dan Stamper-Kurn

Magnons are excitations of magnetically ordered materials that correspond to spatial and temporal variations of the magnetic order parameter. In systems that spontaneously break rotational symmetry, these magnons are Nambu-Goldstone bosons, implying that, in the absence of long-range interactions, they should be gapped and, depending on the nature of the magnetic order parameter, should be either linearly or quadratically dispersing.
