A Dynamics Driven by Repeated Harmonic Perturbations

Abstract

We propose an exactly soluble W*-dynamical system generated by repeated harmonic perturbations of the one-mode quantum oscillator. In the present paper we deal with the case of isolated system. Although dynamics is Hamiltonian and quasi-free, it produces relaxation of initial state of the system to the steady state in the large-time limit. The relaxation is accompanied by the entropy production and we found explicitly the rate for it. Besides, we study evolution of subsystems to elucidate their eventual correlations and convergence to equilibrium state. Finally we prove a universality of the dynamics driven by repeated harmonic perturbations in a certain short-time interaction limit.

A model of nonautonomous dynamics driven by repeated harmonic interaction

Valentin Anatol'evich Zagrebnov, Hiroshi Tamura

We consider an exactly solvable model of nonautonomous W *-dynamics driven by repeated harmonic interaction. The dynamics is Hamiltonian and quasifree. Because of inelastic interaction in the large-time limit, it leads to relaxation of initial states to steady states. We derive the explicit entropy production rate accompanying this relaxation. We also study the evolution of different subsystems to elucidate their eventual correlations and convergence to equilibriums. In conclusion, we prove that the W *-dynamics manifests a universal stationary behavior in a short-time interaction limit.

Exactly soluble quantum model for repeated harmonic perturbation

Hiroshi Tamura, Valentin Anatol'evich Zagrebnov

We consider an exactly soluble dynamical system with inelastic repeated harmonic perturbation. Hamiltonian dynamics is quasi-free, and it leads in the large-time limit to relaxation of initial states and to entropy production. To study correlations we consider the time evolution of subsystems. We prove a universality of dynamics driven by repeated harmonic perturbation in a short-time interaction limit.

Relaxation phenomena in a system of two harmonic oscillators

Antonia Chimonidou, E. C. G. Sudarshan

We study the process by which quantum correlations are created when an interaction Hamiltonian is repeatedly applied to a system of two harmonic oscillators for some characteristic time interval. We show that, for the case where the oscillator frequencies are equal, the initial Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions of the uncoupled parts evolve to a new Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution through a series of transient Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions, or quasistationary, nonequilibrium states. Further, we discuss why the equilibrium reached when the two oscillator frequencies are unequal is not a thermal one. All the calculations are exact and the results are obtained through an iterative process, without using perturbation theory.

Dynamical evolution of quantum oscillators toward equilibrium

A. R. Usha Devi, A. K. Rajagopal

A pure quantum state of large number N of oscillators, interacting via harmonic coupling, evolves such that any small subsystem n<<N of the global state approaches equilibrium. This provides a different example where stability emerges as natural phenomena under quantum dynamics alone, with no necessity to bring in any additional statistical postulates. Mixing of equilibrated subsystems consisting of 1,2,...,n<<N clearly indicates that small subsystems are entangled with the rest of the state, i.e., the bath. Every single mode oscillator is found to relax in a mixed density matrix of the Boltzmann canonical form. In two oscillator stationary subsystems, intraentanglement within the "system" oscillators is found to exist when the magnitude of the squeezing parameter of the bath is comparable in magnitude with that of the coupling strength.

Quantum adiabatic cycles and their breakdown

Nicolò Defenu

The assumption that quasi-static transformations do not quantitatively alter the equilibrium expectation of observables is at the heart of thermodynamics and, in the quantum realm, its validity may be confirmed by the application of adiabatic perturbation theory. Yet, this scenario does not straightforwardly apply to Bosonic systems whose excitation energy is slowly driven through the zero. Here, we prove that the universal slow dynamics of such systems is always non-adiabatic and the quantum corrections to the equilibrium observables become rate independent for any dynamical protocol in the slow drive limit. These findings overturn the common expectation for quasi-static processes as they demonstrate that a system as simple and general as the quantum harmonic oscillator, does not allow for a slow-drive limit, but it always displays sudden quench dynamics.

Partial thermalization in the quantum chain of harmonic oscillators

S. B. Rutkevich

This preprint contains the English translation of the paper "Relaxation dynamics of a quantum chain of harmonic oscillators", which was published by the author in 1980 in the Ukrainian Physical Journal. Comments describing its motivations, background ideas and results are presented as well. This paper addressed to the problem of approach to the thermal equilibrium in an isolated macroscopic quantum system, which was studied on the example of the quantum chain of weakly interacting harmonic oscillators. In the initial state, macroscopic energy was supplied to one oscillator (atom) in the chain. Subsequent evolution of the quantum state of the whole chain was determined due to the model integrability. The main subject of interest was the time evolution of the reduced density operators characterizing the quantum state of a particular atom. On the short time-scale, the energy perturbation expands along the chain with the velocity of the fastest phonon mode. On the long-time scale, the single-atom density operators display strong fluctuations around the canonical Gibbs distribution. These fluctuations are caused by the degeneracy of the energy level differences (presence of resonances) in the model of coupled harmonic oscillators. After lifting this degeneracy, fluctuations are suppressed providing, that the reduced density operator of each atom in the chain becomes very close to the Gibbs distribution at almost any time moment.
