Abstract

The squeezed state of the electromagnetic field can be generated in many nonlinear optical processes and finds a wide range of applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. This article reviews the basic properties of single-and dual-mode squeezed light states, methods of their preparation and detection, as well as their quantum technology applications.

Atoms in squeezed light fields

Squeezed light is of interest as an example of a non-classical state of the electromagnetic field and because of its applications both in technology and in fundamental quantum physics. This review concentrates on one aspect of squeezed light, namely its application in atomic spectroscopy. The general properties, detection and application of squeezed light are first reviewed. The basic features of the main theoretical methods (master equations, quantum Langevin equations, coupled systems) used to treat squeezed light spectroscopy are then outlined. The physics of squeezed light interactions with atomic systems is dealt with first for the simpler case of two-level atoms and then for the more complex situation of multi-level atoms and multi-atom systems. Finally the specific applications of squeezed light spectroscopy are reviewed.

In this paper we review the current state of progress in research on squeezed light. We discuss the basic theory of squeezing and the nature of quantum noise in optical fields. We examine various atomic sources of squeezed light and discuss phase-sensitive detectors of quantum noise including homodyne and heterodyne detectors. Various successful nonlinear optical methods for generating squeezed light are reviewed. We conclude with a discussion of the possible applications of squeezed light.

Recently a number of laboratories have demonstrated the generation of squeezed light, a new kind of light which in some of its aspects exhibits less quantum noise then coherent light. Here a description will be given of how such light is generated and detected. With the successful generation and detection of squeezed light by a number of laboratories1-5 a new degree of control over the quantum statistics of light has been achieved. Light can now be generated which, in some of its aspects, has less quantum noise than coherent light. Such light may find applications in optical communications and in sensitive and precision measurement. Here a description will be given of how squeezed light is generated and detected.6-8 The discussion will be restricted to what is called "quadrature squeezing". Quantum-Enhanced Sensing with Squeezed Light: From Fundamentals to Applications

Squeezed light, a prominent non-classical state of light, exhibits reduced quantum noise in one quadrature component below the standard quantum limit (SQL). The property enables quantum-enhanced precision measurements, surpassing the SQL in quantum sensing applications. This review comprehensively introduces the fundamental concepts, classifications, and experimental generation techniques of squeezed light. It further explores its pivotal role and recent advances in diverse quantum sensing domains, including interferometry, gravitational wave detection, magnetometry, force sensing, biomedical sensing, and quantum radar. The review covers theoretical foundations of squeezed states (including quadrature operators and classification schemes, experimental generation techniques in atomic ensembles, nonlinear crystals, and fibers), fundamentals of quantum sensing with squeezed light (from quantum noise theory to quantum-enhanced metrology), and quantum-enhanced sensing applications across the aforementioned domains. Finally, future challenges and opportunities in the field are discussed.
