Abstract

We investigate nonlinear Kerr-induced coherence effect on a superluminal probing light pulse in a gain-assisted N-type 4-level atomic system via an intense monochromatic laser field. The dispersion exhibits a novel, interesting and useful two-paired double gain lines processes. The system displays lossless characteristics similar to [L. J. Wang, A. Kuzmich, A. Dogariu, Nature \textbf{406}, 277 (2000)] but with advantages of \emph{multiple} \textbf{controllable} anomalous regions, \emph{significantly enhanced} superluminal behavior and \textbf{relaxed} temperature, states of matter regardless of its isotropic or anisotropic conditions. Unlike the instability in [A. M. Akulshin, S. Barreiro, and A. Lezama, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{82}, 4277 (1999)], the present system also \emph{overcomes the instable-limit} by the Kerr-induced coherence effect in the system. Indeed, the coherence enhances the group velocity remarkably by at least $-30 ms$ more than of an instable Kerr-free system with almost negligible distortion in the retrieved pulse.

Superluminal light propagation in a bi-chromatically Raman-driven and Doppler-broadened N-type 4-level atomic system

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor, Iftikhar Ahmad

We investigate the behavior of fast light pulse propagation in an N-type Doppler-broadened 4-level atomic system using double Raman gain processes. This system displays novel and interesting results of two controllable pairs of the double gain lines profile with a control field. The detailed physics of the processes are explored having multiple controllable anomalous regions in the medium. In this set up, the system exhibits significant enhancement in the probing Gaussian pulse through the medium as compared with Ref. [L. J. Wang, A. Kuzmich, and A. Dogariu, Nature \textbf{406}, 227(2000)]. The advance time of the retrieved Gaussian pulse is always greater than the advance time studied in the above said experiment. We analyzed that the pulse propagating through the medium with larger negative group index, $7.32\times10^8$, leaves the medium almost undistorted and sooner by time $76.12 \ ms$ than the pulse which leaves the medium of Wang \emph{et al.}. The Gaussian pulse always remains almost undistorted at output due to lossless characteristic of the medium. We also underlined the ways to suppress incoherences generated by the Doppler-broadening effect in the system. The limitations of the recently developed applications require to explore mechanisms for ultimate speed of a superluminal probe light pulse. In this connection, the proposed scheme may be helpful and can be easily adjusted with the current technology.

Superluminal propagation in a poly-chromatically driven gain assisted four-level N-type atomic system

Bakht Amin Bacha, Iftikhar Ahmad, Arif Ullah +1 more

We investigate the behavior of light propagation in an N-type four-level gain assisted model (Agarwal and Dasgupta 2004 Phys. Rev. A 70 023802) under poly-chromatic pump fields. The system exhibits interesting results of multiple controllable pairs of the gain doublet profile with changes in the intensity of the control field. We observe multiple anomalous dispersive regions for superluminal propagation in the medium. A negative group velocity of −37.50 m s−1 with a negative time delay of −8 ms is observed between each gain doublet in anomalous dispersive regions. This generalized model and its predictions can be tested with existing experimental setups.

Gain assisted multiple surperluminal regions via a Kerr nonlinearity in a double lambda-type atomic configuration

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor, Iftikhar Ahmad +1 more

A four level double lambda-type atomic configuration is extended to polychromatic pump fields driven from the ground to the same excited hyperfine sublevel.Multiple superluminal regions are observed in the gain peak regions and between the two pairs of gain peak regions.Furthermore, the effect of cross Kerr nonlinearity is introduced in the system by applying an additional driving field.Large enhancement in the superluminality is observed as compared to the previously observed superluminality without the Kerr nonlinearity. The results clearly show a small negative group velocity of -0.72 m s -1 with a negative time delay of -42.2 ms in the presence of the Kerr field. In this connection, useful theoretical techniques are presented for the enhancement of slow and fast light propagation. This generalized model is adjustable with the current applied technologies of cloaking devices and spacial mode images.

Control of Wave Propagation and Effect of Kerr Nonlinearity on Group Index

Hazrat Ali, Ziauddin Ziauddin, Iftikhar Ahmed

We use four-level atomic system and control the wave propagation via forbidden decay rate. The Raman gain process becomes dominant on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium by increasing the forbidden decay rate via increasing the number of atoms [G.S. Agarwal and T.N. Dey, Phys. Rev. A 74 (2006) 043805 and K. Harada, T. Kanbashi, and M. Mitsunaga, Phys. Rev. A 73 (2006) 013803 ]. The behavior of wave propagation is dramatically changed from normal (subluminal) to anomalous (superluminal) dispersion by increasing the forbidden decay rate. The system can also give a control over the group velocity of the light propagating through the medium via Kerr field.

Hole-burning in an Autler-Townes doublet and in superluminal (subluminal) Electromagnetically induced transparency of a light pulse via a joint nonlinear coherent Kerr effect and Doppler broadening

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor, Iftikhar Ahmad

We investigate the behavior of light pulse propagation in a 4-level double Lambda atomic system under condition of electromagnetically induced transparency. The Fano type interference effect and spectral hole burning appears in the the dynamics of the absorption-dispersion spectra caused by the joint nonlinear coherence Kerr effect and Doppler broadening. The coherent Kerr effect exhibits an enhancement (reduction) in superluminal (subluminal) in negative (in positive) group index while the Doppler broadening generates multiple hole burning in the Autler-Townes like spectra of this system. The hole burning in addition with coherent Kerr effect on the spectral profile influences the dynamics of subluminal and superluminal of the probe pulse through the medium. The characteristics of superluminality and subluminality modified by considering cold-Kerr-free medium and hot-Kerr-dependent mediums. The light pulse delays and advances in different regions of dispersion medium with the Doppler broadening and coherent Kerr effect. Consequently, the pulse delays by $49μs$, while advance by $-91μs$, for a same set of parameters [note: a revised version is under preparation

Inverse Doppler shift and control field as coherence generators for the stability in superluminal light

Fazal Ghafoor, Bakht Amin Bacha, Salman Khan

A gain-based four-level atomic medium for the stability in superluminal light propagation using control field and inverse Doppler shift as coherence generators is studied. In regimes of weak and strong control field, a broadband and multiple controllable transparency windows are, respectively, identified with significantly enhanced group indices. The observed Doppler effect for the class of high atomic velocity of the medium is counterintuitive in comparison to the effect of the class of low atomic velocity. The intensity of each of the two pump fields is kept less than the optimum limit reported in [M. D. Stenner and D. J. Gauthier, Phys. Rev. A 67, 063801 (2003)] for stability in the superluminal light pulse. Consequently, superluminal stable domains with the generated coherence are explored.
