Inverse Doppler shift and control field as coherence generators for the stability in superluminal light

Abstract

A gain-based four-level atomic medium for the stability in superluminal light propagation using control field and inverse Doppler shift as coherence generators is studied. In regimes of weak and strong control field, a broadband and multiple controllable transparency windows are, respectively, identified with significantly enhanced group indices. The observed Doppler effect for the class of high atomic velocity of the medium is counterintuitive in comparison to the effect of the class of low atomic velocity. The intensity of each of the two pump fields is kept less than the optimum limit reported in [M. D. Stenner and D. J. Gauthier, Phys. Rev. A 67, 063801 (2003)] for stability in the superluminal light pulse. Consequently, superluminal stable domains with the generated coherence are explored.

In the presence of inverse Doppler shift, we verify the superluminal effect in a weak probe field through the medium of our atomic system using classes of the atoms of high average velocity. Additional analysis of analytical results for the advancement of Gaussian pulse in time is presented. The pulse advancement through the single transparency window under the weak control field increases. The pulse advancement through the central (each of the sides) window of the medium under the strong control field increases (decreases) when its intensity is gradually increased.

Comment on “Inverse Doppler shift and control field as coherence generators for the stability in superluminal light”

B. Macke, Bernard Ségard

In their study of inverse Doppler shift and superluminal light [Ghafoor et al., Phys. Rev. A 91, 053807 (2015)], Ghafoor et al. consider a three-level atomic arrangement with transitions in the optical domain. In fact, the values they give to the parameters lead to a probe wavelength lying in the decimeter band. We point out that the Doppler shifts are then negligible and remark that the simulations performed by Ghafoor et al. do not evidence any superluminal effect.

Phase-Controlled Transparent Superluminal Light Propagation in a Doppler-Broadened Four-Level N-Type System

Lida Ebrahimi Zohravi, Majid Abedi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

The propagation of a weak probe field in a four-level N-type quantum system in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is theoretically investigated. The optical properties of the system are studied and it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by relative phase of applied fields. By changing the relative phase of applied fields, the group velocity of light pulse changes from transparent subluminal to the transparent superluminal light propagation. Thus, the phase-controlled absorption-free superluminal light propagation is obtained without applying an incoherent laser fields to the system. The propagation of a weak probe light pulse is studied by solving the Maxwell's wave equation on numerical grid in space and time. Moreover, we study the third order self- and cross-Kerr susceptibility of probe field and calculate the nonlinear cross-phase shift for different values of intensity of applied fields. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the light pulse propagation and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation directions allows us to preserve our results even in the presence of Doppler effect. It is demonstrated that by increasing the Doppler width of distribution to the room temperature, the dispersion changes from transparent subluminal to transparent superluminal light propagation which is our major motivation for this work.

Avoidance of instability of a superluminal Gaussian light pulse via control of nonlinear coherence Kerr effect in a gain-assisted medium

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor

We investigate nonlinear Kerr-induced coherence effect on a superluminal probing light pulse in a gain-assisted N-type 4-level atomic system via an intense monochromatic laser field. The dispersion exhibits a novel, interesting and useful two-paired double gain lines processes. The system displays lossless characteristics similar to [L. J. Wang, A. Kuzmich, A. Dogariu, Nature \textbf{406}, 277 (2000)] but with advantages of \emph{multiple} \textbf{controllable} anomalous regions, \emph{significantly enhanced} superluminal behavior and \textbf{relaxed} temperature, states of matter regardless of its isotropic or anisotropic conditions. Unlike the instability in [A. M. Akulshin, S. Barreiro, and A. Lezama, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{82}, 4277 (1999)], the present system also \emph{overcomes the instable-limit} by the Kerr-induced coherence effect in the system. Indeed, the coherence enhances the group velocity remarkably by at least $-30 ms$ more than of an instable Kerr-free system with almost negligible distortion in the retrieved pulse.

Superluminal light propagation in a bi-chromatically Raman-driven and Doppler-broadened N-type 4-level atomic system

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor, Iftikhar Ahmad

We investigate the behavior of fast light pulse propagation in an N-type Doppler-broadened 4-level atomic system using double Raman gain processes. This system displays novel and interesting results of two controllable pairs of the double gain lines profile with a control field. The detailed physics of the processes are explored having multiple controllable anomalous regions in the medium. In this set up, the system exhibits significant enhancement in the probing Gaussian pulse through the medium as compared with Ref. [L. J. Wang, A. Kuzmich, and A. Dogariu, Nature \textbf{406}, 227(2000)]. The advance time of the retrieved Gaussian pulse is always greater than the advance time studied in the above said experiment. We analyzed that the pulse propagating through the medium with larger negative group index, $7.32\times10^8$, leaves the medium almost undistorted and sooner by time $76.12 \ ms$ than the pulse which leaves the medium of Wang \emph{et al.}. The Gaussian pulse always remains almost undistorted at output due to lossless characteristic of the medium. We also underlined the ways to suppress incoherences generated by the Doppler-broadening effect in the system. The limitations of the recently developed applications require to explore mechanisms for ultimate speed of a superluminal probe light pulse. In this connection, the proposed scheme may be helpful and can be easily adjusted with the current technology.

Controllable steep dispersion with gain in a four-levelN-scheme with four-wave mixing

Nathaniel B. Phillips, Irina V. Novikova, Eugeniy E. Mikhailov +2 more

We present a theoretical analysis of the propagation of light pulses through a medium of four-level atoms, with two strong pump fields and a weak probe field in an N-scheme arrangement. We show that four-wave mixing has a profound effect on the probe-field group velocity and absorption, allowing the probe-field propagation to be tuned from superluminal to slow-light regimes with amplification.
