Abstract

We report the discovery of flatten Bloch bands with nontrivial topological numbers in a quasi-one-dimensional sawtooth chain. We present the nearly flat-band with a obvious gap and nonzero Chern number of the modulated sawtooth chain by tuning hoppings and modulation. With the increasing of the strength of the modulation, the system undergos a series of topological phase transitions in the absence of interaction. By adding interaction to the model, we present exact diagonalization results for the system at $1/3$ filling and some interesting connections with fraction quantum Hall states: topological degeneracy, nontrivially topological number and fractional statistic of the quasihole.

Topological quantum phase transitions and topological flat bands on the star lattice

Wen-Chao Chen, Ru Liu, Yi-Fei Wang +1 more

We study a tight-binding model on the two-dimensional star lattice (also called the decorated honeycomb lattice) with short-range hoppings modulated by staggered fluxes. We observe a series of topological quantum phase transitions when tuning the hopping parameters, and find nontrivial topological bands with high Chern numbers. We also find in some parameter regions, the system exhibits the interesting topological flat bands with large flatness ratios of the band gaps over the bandwidths. We further illustrate the $1/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect of interacting hard-core bosons filled in a lowest topological flat band of the star lattice.

Fractional Chern Insulator

Nicolas Regnault, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig

Chern insulators are band insulators exhibiting a nonzero Hall conductance but preserving the lattice translational symmetry. We conclusively show that a partially filled Chern insulator at 1/3 filling exhibits a fractional quantum Hall effect and rule out charge-density wave states that have not been ruled out by previous studies. By diagonalizing the Hubbard interaction in the flat-band limit of these insulators, we show the following: The system is incompressible and has a 3-fold degenerate ground state whose momenta can be computed by postulating an generalized Pauli principle with no more than 1 particle in 3 consecutive orbitals. The ground state density is constant, and equal to 1/3 in momentum space. Excitations of the system are fractional statistics particles whose total counting matches that of quasiholes in the Laughlin state based on the same generalized Pauli principle. The entanglement spectrum of the state has a clear entanglement gap which seems to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit. The levels below the gap exhibit counting identical to that of Laughlin 1/3 quasiholes. Both the 3 ground states and excited states exhibit spectral flow upon flux insertion. All the properties above disappear in the trivial state of the insulator - both the many-body energy gap and the entanglement gap close at the phase transition when the single-particle Hamiltonian goes from topologically nontrivial to topologically trivial. These facts clearly show that fractional many-body states are possible in topological insulators.

Fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands with Chern number two

Yi-Fei Wang, Hong Yao, Chang-De Gong +1 more

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number $C=1$. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number $C=2$. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ filling characterized by threefold quasidegeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap in quasihole excitation spectrum. We also observe numerical evidence of a robust fermionic fractional quantum Hall effect for spinless fermions at the $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/5$ filling with short-range interactions.

SU(N) fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng, D. N. Sheng

We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with $\mathrm{SU}(N)$-invariant interactions based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(N+1)$ for bosons [$\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions] in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characterization based on the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix and discuss the close relationship to the fractional quantum Hall physics in topological flat bands with Chern number $N$.

Fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flat bands with nontrivial topology

Jan Carl Budich, Eddy Ardonne

We consider a topologically nontrivial flat-band structure in one spatial dimension in the presence of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor Hubbard interaction. The noninteracting band structure is characterized by a symmetry-protected topologically quantized Berry phase. At certain fractional fillings, a gapped phase with a filling-dependent ground-state degeneracy and fractionally charged quasiparticles emerges. At filling $\frac{1}{3}$, the ground states carry a fractional Berry phase in the momentum basis. These features at first glance suggest a certain analogy to the fractional quantum Hall scenario in two dimensions. We solve the interacting model analytically in the physically relevant limit of a large band gap in the underlying band structure, the analog of a lowest Landau level projection. Our solution affords a simple physical understanding of the properties of the gapped interacting phase. We pinpoint crucial differences to the fractional quantum Hall case by studying the Berry phase and the entanglement entropy associated with the degenerate ground states. In particular, we conclude that the ``fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flat bands'' is not a one-dimensional analog of the two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall states, but rather a charge density wave with a nontrivial Berry phase. Finally, the symmetry-protected nature of the Berry phase of the interacting phase is demonstrated by explicitly constructing a gapped interpolation to a state with a trivial Berry phase.

Quantum phases of disordered flatband lattice fractional quantum Hall systems

Shuo Yang, Kai Sun, S. Das Sarma

By numerical exact diagonalization techniques, we obtain the quantum phase diagram of the lattice fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems in the presence of quenched disorder. By implementing an array of local potential traps representing the disorder, we show that the system undergoes a series of quantum phase transitions as the disorder and/or the interaction is tuned. As the strength of potential traps is increased, the FQH state turns into a compressible liquid and then into a topologically trivial insulator. We use the numerically calculated energy gap, quantum degeneracy, the Chern number, the entanglement spectrum, and the fidelity metric to identify various quantum phases. The connection to continuum FQH effects is also discussed.
