Abstract

We present a systematic study of dilute three-dimensional dipolar Bose gas employing a finite temperature perturbation theory (beyond the mean field). We analyze in particular the behavior of the anomalous density, we find that this quantity has a finite value in the limit of weak interactions at both zero and finite temperatures. We show that the presence of the dipole–dipole interaction enhances fluctuations, the second order correlation function and thermodynamic quantities such as the chemical potential, the ground state energy, the compressibility and the superfluid fraction. We identify the validity criterion of the small parameter of the theory for Bose-condensed dipolar gases.

Dipolar Bose gas in a weak isotropic speckle disorder

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We investigate the properties of a homogeneous dipolar Bose gas in a weak three-dimensional isotropic speckle disorder at finite temperatures. By using the Bogoliubov theory (beyond the mean field), we calculate the condensate and the superfluid fractions as a function of density and strengths of disorder and interaction. The disorder impact on the anomalous density, the chemical potential, and the ground-state energy is also analyzed. We show that the peculiar interplay of the dipole-dipole interaction and weak disorder makes the superfluid fraction and sound velocity anisotropic.

Properties of dipolar bosonic quantum gases at finite temperatures

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

Abstract The properties of ultracold quantum gases of bosons with dipole–dipole interaction are investigated at finite temperature in the frame of representative ensembles theory. Self-consistent coupled equations of motion are derived for the condensate and the non-condensate components. Corrections due to the dipolar interaction to condensate depletion, the anomalous density and thermodynamic quantities such as the ground state energy, the equation of state, the compressibility and the presure are calculated in the homogeneous case at both zero and finite temperatures. Effects of interaction and temperature on the structure factor are also discussed. Within the realm of the local density approximation, we generalize our results to the case of a trapped dipolar gas.

Two-dimensional dipolar Bose gas with the roton-maxon excitation spectrum

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Gora V. Shlyapnikov

We discuss fluctuations in a dilute two-dimensional Bose-condensed dipolar gas, which has a roton-maxon character of the excitation spectrum. We calculate the density-density correlation function, fluctuation corrections to the chemical potential, compressibility, and normal (superfluid) fraction. It is shown that the presence of the roton strongly enhances fluctuations of the density, and we establish the validity criterion of the Bogoliubov approach. At $T=0$ the condensate depletion becomes significant if the roton minimum is sufficiently close to 0. At finite temperatures exceeding the roton energy, the effect of thermal fluctuations is stronger and it may lead to a large normal fraction of the gas and compressibility.

Behavior of the anomalous correlation function in a uniform two-dimensional Bose gas

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We investigate the behavior of the anomalous correlation function in two-dimensional Bose gas. In the local case, we find that this quantity has a finite value in the limit of weak interactions at zero temperature. The effects of the anomalous density on some thermodynamic quantities are also considered. These effects can modify, in particular, the chemical potential, the ground-state energy, the depletion, and the superfluid fraction. Our predictions are in good agreement with recent analytical and numerical calculations. We show also that the anomalous density presents a significant importance compared to the noncondensed one at zero temperature. The single-particle anomalous correlation function is expressed in two-dimensional homogenous Bose gases by using the density-phase fluctuation. We then confirm that the anomalous average accompanies in analogous manner the true condensate at zero temperature, while it does not exist at finite temperature.

Low-density expansions for the homogeneous dipolar Bose gas at zero temperature

Alexander Yu. Cherny

The low-density expansions for the energy, chemical potential, and condensate depletion of the homogeneous dilute dipolar Bose gas are obtained by regularizing the dipole-dipole interaction at long distances. It is shown that the leading term, proportional to the density, allows a simple physical interpretation and consistently describes the thermodynamic stability of the system. The long-range asymptotics are obtained analytically for the normal and anomalous one-particle correlation functions and the pair distribution function. We discuss the properties of the two-body scattering with zero relative momentum for the dipole-dipole interaction; in particular, we derive the asymptotics of the wave function and a correction to the scattering length for small values of the dipolar range. We show how the density expansions can be derived within the Bogoliubov model of weakly interacting particles without any divergence from the assumption of universality of the expansions at low densities.

Beyond mean-field low-lying excitations of dipolar Bose gases

Aristeu R. P. Lima, Axel Pelster

We theoretically investigate various beyond mean-field effects on Bose gases at zero temperature featuring the anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole interaction in addition to the isotropic and short-range contact interaction. Within the realm of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes theory, we consider static properties and low-lying excitations of both homogeneous and harmonically trapped dipolar bosonic gases. For the homogeneous system, the condensate depletion, the ground-state energy, the equation of state, and the speed of sound are discussed in detail. Making use of the local density approximation, we extend these results in order to study the properties of a dipolar Bose gas in a harmonic trap and in the regime of large particle numbers. After deriving the equations of motion for the general case of a triaxial trap, we analyze the influence of quantum fluctuations on important properties of the gas, such as the equilibrium configuration and the low-lying excitations in the case of a cylinder-symmetric trap. In addition to the monopole and quadrupole oscillation modes, we also discuss the radial quadrupole mode. We find that the latter acquires a quantum correction exclusively due to the dipole-dipole interaction. As a result, we identify the radial quadrupole as a reasonably accessible source for the signature of dipolar many-body effects and stress the enhancing character that dipolar interactions have for quantum fluctuations in the other oscillation modes.
