Abstract

We investigate the properties of a homogeneous dipolar Bose gas in a weak three-dimensional isotropic speckle disorder at finite temperatures. By using the Bogoliubov theory (beyond the mean field), we calculate the condensate and the superfluid fractions as a function of density and strengths of disorder and interaction. The disorder impact on the anomalous density, the chemical potential, and the ground-state energy is also analyzed. We show that the peculiar interplay of the dipole-dipole interaction and weak disorder makes the superfluid fraction and sound velocity anisotropic.

Bogoliubov theory of dipolar Bose gas in a weak random potential

Mahmoud Ghabour, Axel Pelster

We consider a dilute homogeneous Bose gas with both an isotropic short-range contact interaction and an anisotropic long-range dipole-dipole interaction in a weak random potential at low temperature in three dimensions. Within the realm of Bogoliubov theory, we analyze how both condensate and superfluid are depleted due to quantum and thermal fluctuations as well as disorder fluctuations.

Theory of excitations of dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate at finite temperature

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We present a systematic study of dilute three-dimensional dipolar Bose gas employing a finite temperature perturbation theory (beyond the mean field). We analyze in particular the behavior of the anomalous density, we find that this quantity has a finite value in the limit of weak interactions at both zero and finite temperatures. We show that the presence of the dipole–dipole interaction enhances fluctuations, the second order correlation function and thermodynamic quantities such as the chemical potential, the ground state energy, the compressibility and the superfluid fraction. We identify the validity criterion of the small parameter of the theory for Bose-condensed dipolar gases.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in weak anisotropic disorder

Branko Nikolić, Antun Balaž, Axel Pelster

Here we study properties of a homogeneous dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a weak anisotropic random potential with Lorentzian correlation at zero temperature. To this end we solve perturbatively the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to second order in the random potential strength and obtain analytic results for the disorder ensemble averages of both the condensate and the superfluid depletion, the equation of state, and the sound velocity. For a pure contact interaction and a vanishing correlation length, we reproduce the seminal results of Huang and Meng, which were originally derived within a Bogoliubov theory around a disorder-averaged background field. For dipolar interaction and isotropic Lorentzian-correlated disorder, we obtain results which are qualitatively similar to the case of an isotropic Gaussian-correlated disorder. In the case of an anisotropic disorder, the physical observables show characteristic anisotropies which arise from the formation of fragmented dipolar condensates in the local minima of the disorder potential.

Bose-Einstein condensate in weak 3d isotropic speckle disorder

B. Abdullaev, Axel Pelster

The effect of a weak three-dimensional (3d) isotropic laser speckle disorder on various thermodynamic properties of a dilute Bose gas is considered at zero temperature. First, we summarize the derivation of the autocorrelation function of laser speckles in 1d and 2d following the seminal work of Goodman. The goal of this discussion is to show that a Gaussian approximation of this function, proposed in some recent papers, is inconsistent with the general background of laser speckle theory. Then we propose a possible experimental realization for an isotropic 3d laser speckle potential and derive its corresponding autocorrelation function. Using a Fourier transform of that function, we calculate both condensate depletion and sound velocity of a Bose- Einstein condensate as disorder ensemble averages of such a weak laser speckle potential within a perturbative solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By doing so, we reproduce the expression of the normalfluid density obtained earlier within the treatment of Landau. This physically transparent derivation shows that condensate particles, which are scattered by disorder, form a gas of quasiparticles which is responsible for the normalfluid component.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with weak disorder

Christian Krumnow, Axel Pelster

A homogeneous polarized dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate is considered in the presence of weak quenched disorder within mean-field theory at zero temperature. By first solving perturbatively the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then performing disorder ensemble averages for physical observables, it is shown that the anisotropy of the two-particle interaction is passed on to both the superfluid density and the sound velocity.

Bose-Bose mixtures in a weak-disorder potential: Fluctuations and superfluidity

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Karima Abbas

We study the properties of a homogeneous dilute Bose-Bose gas in a weak-disorder potential at zero temperature. By using the perturbation theory, we calculate the disorder corrections to the condensate density, the equation of state, the compressibility, and the superfluid density as a function of density, strength of disorder, and miscibility parameter. It is found that the disorder potential may lead to modifying the miscibility-immiscibility condition and a full miscible phase turns out to be impossible in the presence of the disorder. We show that the intriguing interplay of the disorder and intra- and interspecies interactions may strongly influence the localization of each component, the quantum fluctuations, and the compressibility, as well as the superfluidity of the system.
