Nonperturbative renormalization-group approach to fermion systems in the two-particle-irreducible effective action formalism

Abstract

We propose a nonperturbative renormalization-group (NPRG) approach to fermion systems in the two-particle-irreducible (2PI) effective action formalism, based on an exact RG equation for the Luttinger-Ward functional. This approach enables us to describe phases with spontaneously broken symmetries while satisfying the Mermin-Wagner theorem. We show that it is possible to choose the Hartree-Fock random phase approximation theory as initial condition of the RG flow and argue that the 2PI-NPRG is not restricted to the weak-coupling limit. An expansion of the Luttinger-Ward functional about the minimum of the 2PI effective action including only the two-particle 2PI vertex leads to nontrivial RG equations where interactions between fermions and collective excitations naturally emerge.

Collective fields in the functional renormalization group for fermions, Ward identities, and the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model

Florian Schütz, Lorenz Bartosch, Peter Kopietz

We develop a new formulation of the functional renormalization group (RG) for interacting fermions. Our approach unifies the purely fermionic formulation based on the Grassmannian functional integral, which has been used in recent years by many authors, with the traditional Wilsonian RG approach to quantum systems pioneered by Hertz [Phys. Rev. B 14, 1165 (1976)], which attempts to describe the infrared behavior of the system in terms of an effective bosonic theory associated with the soft modes of the underlying fermionic problem. In our approach, we decouple the interaction by means of a suitable Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation (following the Hertz approach), but do not eliminate the fermions; instead, we derive an exact hierarchy of RG flow equations for the irreducible vertices of the resulting coupled field theory involving both fermionic and bosonic fields. The freedom of choosing a momentum transfer cutoff for the bosonic soft modes in addition to the usual band cutoff for the fermions opens the possibility of new RG schemes. In particular, we show how the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model (i.e., one-dimensional fermions with linear energy dispersion and interactions involving only small momentum transfers) emerges from the functional RG if one works with a momentum transfer cutoff. Then the Ward identities associated with the local particle conservation at each Fermi point are valid at every stage of the RG flow and provide a solution of an infinite hierarchy of flow equations for the irreducible vertices. The RG flow equation for the irreducible single-particle self-energy can then be closed and can be reduced to a linear integrodifferential equation, the solution of which yields the result familiar from bosonization. We suggest new truncation schemes of the exact hierarchy of flow equations, which might be useful even outside the weak coupling regime.

Renormalization group flow of the Luttinger-Ward functional: Conserving approximations and application to the Anderson impurity model

J. F. Rentrop, V. Meden, Severin G. Jakobs

We study the renormalization group flow of the Luttinger-Ward functional and of its two-particle-irreducible vertex functions, given a cutoff in the two-particle interaction. We derive a conserving approximation to the flow and relate it to the fluctuation exchange approximation as well as to nonconserving approximations introduced in an earlier publication [J. F. Rentrop, S. G. Jakobs, and V. Meden, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48, 145002 (2015)]. We apply the different approximate flow equations to the single-impurity Anderson model in thermal equilibrium at vanishing temperature. Numerical results for the effective mass, the spin susceptibility, the charge susceptibility, and the linear conductance reflect the similarity of the methods to the fluctuation exchange approximation. We find the majority of the approximations to deviate stronger from the exact results than one-particle-irreducible functional renormalization group schemes. However, we identify a simple static two-particle-irreducible flow scheme which performs remarkably well and produces an exponential Kondo-like scale in the renormalized level position.

Towards a renormalization group approach to density functional theory—general formalism and case studies

Sandra Kemler, Jens Braun

We discuss a two-particle point-irreducible (2PPI) approach to many-body physics which relies on a renormalization group (RG) flow equation for the associated effective action. In particular, the general structure and properties of this RG flow equation are analyzed in detail. Moreover, we discuss how our 2PPI-RG approach relates to density functional theory and argue that it can in principle be used to study ground-state properties of non-relativistic many-body systems from microscopic interactions, such as (heavy) nuclei. For illustration purposes, we use our formalism to compute the ground-state properties of two toy models. Communicated by Achim Schwenk

Luttinger liquid fixed point for a two-dimensional flat Fermi surface

Vieri Mastropietro

We consider a system of two-dimensional interacting fermions with a flat Fermi surface. The apparent conflict between Luttinger and non-Luttinger liquid behaviors found through different approximations is resolved by showing the existence of a line of nontrivial fixed points, for the renormalization group (RG) flow, corresponding to Luttinger liquid behavior; the presence of marginally relevant operators can cause flow away from the fixed point. The analysis is nonperturbative and based on the implementation, at each RG iteration, of Ward identities obtained from local phase transformations depending on the Fermi surface side, implying the partial vanishing of the beta function.

Two-particle irreducible functional renormalization group schemes—a comparative study

J. F. Rentrop, Severin G. Jakobs, V. Meden

We derive functional renormalization group (fRG) schemes for Fermi systems which are based on the two-particle irreducible approach to the quantum many-body problem. In a first step, the cutoff is introduced in the non-interacting propagator as it is commonly done in fRG based on one-particle irreducible vertex functions. The most natural truncation of the resulting infinite hierarchy of flow equations is shown to be fully equivalent to self-consistent perturbation theory. An earlier suggested alternative truncation strategy is considered as well. In a second step, the cutoff is introduced in the two-particle interaction. Again two truncation procedures are investigated, one of which was derived before. In the latter, the mean-field solution of the many-body problem is considered as the starting point of the renormalization group flow. We compare the performance and the required numerical resources for solving the coupled flow equations for all the approximate schemes by applying them to the problem of the quantum anharmonic oscillator. In a functional integral representation, this model has a formal similarity to the quantum many-body problem. The perspectives for applying the derived two-particle irreducible fRG approaches to zero- and one-dimensional systems of correlated fermions are discussed.

Bosonic effective action for interacting fermions

CHRISTOF WETTERICH

We compare different versions of a bosonic description for systems of interacting fermions, with particular emphasis on the free-energy functional. The bosonic effective action makes the issue of symmetries particularly transparent. A systematic expansion for the bosonic effective action starts with a solution to the lowest-order Schwinger-Dyson or gap equation. We propose a two-particle irreducible formulation of an exact functional renormalization group equation for computations beyond leading order. On this basis we suggest a renormalized gap equation. This approach is compared with functional renormalization in a partially bosonized setting.
