Abstract

We present the expression for the quasiparticle vertex function ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ (proportional to the Landau interaction function) in a 2D Fermi liquid (FL) near an instability towards antiferromagnetism. This function is relevant in many ways in the context of metallic quantum criticality. Previous studies have found that near a quantum critical point, the system enters into a regime in which the fermionic self-energy is large near hot spots on the Fermi surface [points on the Fermi surface connected by the antiferromagnetic ordering vector ${q}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$] and has much stronger dependence on frequency than on momentum. We show that in this regime, which we termed a critical FL, the conventional random-phase-approximation- (RPA) type approach breaks down, and to properly calculate the vertex function one has to sum up an infinite series of terms which were explicitly excluded in the conventional treatment. Besides, we show that, to properly describe the spin component of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ even in an ordinary FL, one has to add Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) terms to the RPA vertex. We show that the total ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ is larger in a critical FL than in an ordinary FL, roughly by an extra power of magnetic correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$, which diverges at the quantum critical point. However, the enhancement of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ is highly nonuniform: It holds only when, for one of the two momentum variables, the distance from a hot spot along the Fermi surface is much larger than for the other one. This fact renders our case different from quantum criticality at small momentum, where the enhancement of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ was found to be homogeneous. We show that the charge and spin components of the total vertex function satisfy the universal relations following from the Ward identities related to the conservation of the particle number and the total spin. We show that in a critical FL, the Ward identity involves ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ taken between particles on the FS. We find that the charge and spin components of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ are identical to leading order in the magnetic correlation length. We use our results for ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ and for the quasiparticle residue to derive the Landau parameters ${F}_{c}^{l=0}={F}_{s}^{l=0}$, the density of states, and the uniform ($q=0$) charge and spin susceptibilities ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}^{l=0}={\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}^{l=0}$. We show that the density of states ${N}_{F}$ diverges as $log\ensuremath{\xi}$; however, ${F}_{c,s}^{l=0}$ also diverge as $log\ensuremath{\xi}$, such that the total ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c,s}^{(l=0)}\ensuremath{\propto}{N}_{F}/(1+{F}_{c}^{l=0})$ remain finite at $\ensuremath{\xi}=\ensuremath{\infty}$. We show that at weak coupling these susceptibilities are parametrically smaller than for free fermions.

Fermi liquid near a q = 0 charge quantum critical point

R. David Mayrhofer, Andrey V. Chubukov, P. Wölfle

We analyze the quasiparticle interaction function (the fully dressed and antisymmetrized interaction between fermions) for a two-dimensional Fermi liquid at zero temperature close to a q=0 charge quantum critical point (QCP) in the $s\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{wave}$ channel (the one leading to phase separation). By the Ward identities, this vertex function must be related to quasiparticle residue $Z$, which can be obtained independently from the fermionic self-energy. We show that to satisfy these Ward identities, one needs to go beyond the standard diagrammatic formulation of Fermi-liquid theory and include a series of additional contributions to the vertex function. These contributions are not present in a conventional Fermi liquid, but do emerge near a QCP, where the effective 4-fermion interaction is mediated by a soft dynamical boson. We demonstrate explicitly that including these terms restores the Ward identity. Our analysis is built on previous studies of the vertex function near an antiferromag netic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 89, 045108 (2014)] and a $d$-wave charge-nematic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045110 (2010)]. We show th at for $s\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{wave}$ charge QCP the analysis is more straightforward and allows one to obtain the full quasiparticle interaction function (the Landau function) near a QCP. We show that all partial components of this function (Landau parameters) diverge near a QCP, in the same way as the effective mass ${m}^{*}$, except for the $s$-wave charge component, which approaches $\ensuremath{-}1$. Consequently, the susceptibilities in all channels, except for the critical one, remain finite at a QCP, as they should.

Fermi liquid near Pomeranchuk quantum criticality

Dmitrii L. Maslov, Andrey V. Chubukov

We analyze the behavior of an itinerant two-dimensional Fermi system near a charge nematic $(n=2)$ Pomeranchuk instability in terms of the Landau Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. A key object of our study is the fully renormalized vertex function ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$, related to the Landau interaction function. We derive ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$ for a model case of the long-range interaction in the nematic channel. Already within the random-phase approximation (RPA), the vertex is singular near the instability. The full vertex, obtained by resumming the ladder series composed of the RPA vertices, differs from the RPA result by a multiplicative renormalization factor ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, related to the single-particle residue $Z$ and effective-mass renormalization ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m$. We employ the Pitaevski-Landau identities, which express the derivatives of the self-energy in terms of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$, to obtain and solve a set of coupled nonlinear equations for ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, $Z$, and ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m$. We show that near the transition the system enters a critical FL regime, where ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\ensuremath{\sim}Z\ensuremath{\propto}{(1+{g}_{c,2})}^{1/2}$ and ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m\ensuremath{\approx}1/Z$, where ${g}_{c,2}$ is the $n=2$ charge Landau component which approaches $\ensuremath{-}1$ at the instability. We construct the Landau function of the critical FL and show that all but ${g}_{c,2}$ Landau components diverge at the critical point. We also show that in the critical regime the one-loop result for the self-energy $\ensuremath{\Sigma}(K)\ensuremath{\propto}\ensuremath{\int}dPG(P)D(K\ensuremath{-}P)$ is asymptotically exact if one identifies the effective interaction $D$ with the RPA form of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$.

Vertex functions at finite momentum: Application to antiferromagnetic quantum criticality

P. Wölfle, Elihu Abrahams

We analyze the three-point vertex function that describes the coupling of fermionic particle-hole pairs in a metal to spin or charge fluctuations at nonzero momentum. We consider Ward identities, which connect two-particle vertex functions to the self-energy, in the framework of a Hubbard model. These are derived using conservation laws following from local symmetries. The generators considered are the spin density and particle density. It is shown that at certain antiferromagnetic critical points, where the quasiparticle effective mass is diverging, the vertex function describing the coupling of particle-hole pairs to the spin density Fourier component at the antiferromagnetic wave vector is also divergent. Then we give an explicit calculation of the irreducible vertex function for the case of three-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and show that it is proportional to the diverging quasiparticle effective mass.

Quantum-critical theory of the spin-fermion model and its application to cuprates: Normal state analysis

Ar. Abanov, Andrey V. Chubukov, Jörg Schmalian

We present the full analysis of the normal state properties of the spin-fermion model near the antiferromagnetic instability in two dimensions. The model describes low-energy fermions interacting with their own collective spin fluctuations, which soften at the antiferromagnetic transition. We argue that in 2D, the system has two typical energies—an effective spin-fermion interaction g¯ and an energy ωsf below which the system behaves as a Fermi liquid. The ratio of the two determines the dimensionless coupling constant for spin-fermion interaction λ2 ∝ g¯/ωsf. We show that λ scales with the spin correlation length and diverges at criticality. This divergence implies that the conventional perturbative expansion breaks down. We develop a novel approach to the problem—the expansion in either the inverse number of hot spots in the Brillouin zone, or the inverse number of fermionic flavours—which allows us to explicitly account for all terms which diverge as powers of λ, and treat the remaining, O(log λ) terms in the RG formalism. We apply this technique to study the properties of the spin-fermion model in various frequency and temperature regimes. We present the results for the fermionic spectral function, spin susceptibility, optical conductivity and other observables. We compare our results in detail with the normal state data for the cuprates, and argue that the spin-fermion model is capable of explaining the anomalous normal state properties of the high T c materials. We also show that the conventional {4 theory of the quantum-critical behaviour is inapplicable in 2D due to the singularity of the {4 vertex.

Quasiparticle spectrum in a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid: Shadow and flat bands

Andrey V. Chubukov

We consider a two-dimensional Fermi liquid in the vicinity of a spin-density-wave transition to a phase with commensurate antiferromagnetic long-range order. We assume that near the transition, the Fermi surface is large and crosses the magnetic Brillouin zone boundary. We show that under these conditions, the self-energy corrections to the dynamical spin susceptibility, \ensuremath{\chi}(q,\ensuremath{\omega}), and to the quasiparticle spectral function, A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}), are divergent near the transition. We identify and sum the series of most singular diagrams, and obtain a solution for \ensuremath{\chi}(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) and an approximate solution for A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}). We show that (i) A(k) at a given, small \ensuremath{\omega} has an extra peak at k=${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$+\ensuremath{\pi} (shadow band), and (ii) the dispersion near the crossing points is much flatter than for free electrons. The relevance of these results to recent photoemission experiments in ${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{7\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\delta}}}$ and ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{CaCu}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ systems is discussed.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior at flat hot spots from quantum critical fluctuations at the onset of charge- or spin-density wave order

Lukas Debbeler, Walter Metzner

We analyze quantum fluctuation effects at the onset of charge- or spin-density wave order with a $2{k}_{F}$ wave vector $\mathbf{Q}$ in two-dimensional metals, for the special case where $\mathbf{Q}$ connects a pair of hot spots situated at high symmetry points of the Fermi surface with a vanishing Fermi surface curvature. We compute the order parameter susceptibility and the fermion self-energy in one-loop approximation. The susceptibility has a pronounced peak at $\mathbf{Q}$, and the self-energy displays non-Fermi liquid behavior at the hot spots, with a linear frequency dependence of its imaginary part. The real part of the one-loop self-energy exhibits logarithmic divergencies with universal prefactors as a function of both frequency and momentum, which may be interpreted as perturbative signatures of power laws with universal anomalous dimensions. As a result, one obtains a non-Fermi liquid metal with a vanishing quasiparticle weight at the hot spots, and a renormalized dispersion relation with anomalous algebraic momentum dependencies near the hot spots.

We present the expression for the quasiparticle vertex function \ensuremathΓ\ensuremathω(KF,PF){\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})\ensuremathΓ\ensuremathω(KF,PF) (proportional to the Landau interaction function) in a 2D Fermi liquid (FL) near an instability towards antiferromagnetism. This function is relevant in many ways in the context of metallic quantum criticality. Previous studies have found that near a quantum critical point, the system enters into a regime in which the fermionic self-energy is large near hot spots on the Fermi surface [points on the Fermi surface connected by the antiferromagnetic ordering vector q\ensuremathπ=(\ensuremathπ,\ensuremathπ){q}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})q\ensuremathπ=(\ensuremathπ,\ensuremathπ)] and has much stronger dependence on frequency than on momentum. We use our results for \ensuremathΓ\ensuremathω(KF,PF){\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})\ensuremathΓ\ensuremathω(KF,PF) and for the quasiparticle residue to derive the Landau parameters Fcl=0=Fsl=0{F}_{c}^{l=0}={F}_{s}^{l=0}Fcl=0=Fsl=0, the density of states, and the uniform (q=0q=0q=0) charge and spin susceptibilities \ensuremathχcl=0=\ensuremathχsl=0{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}^{l=0}={\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}^{l=0}\ensuremathχcl=0=\ensuremathχsl=0. We show that the density of states NF{N}_{F}NF diverges as log\ensuremathξlog\ensuremath{\xi}log\ensuremathξ; however, Fc,sl=0{F}_{c,s}^{l=0}Fc,sl=0 also diverge as log\ensuremathξlog\ensuremath{\xi}log\ensuremathξ, such that the total \ensuremathχc,s(l=0)\ensuremath∝NF/(1+Fcl=0){\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c,s}^{(l=0)}\ensuremath{\propto}{N}_{F}/(1+{F}_{c}^{l=0})\ensuremathχc,s(l=0)\ensuremath∝NF/(1+Fcl=0) remain finite at \ensuremathξ=\ensuremath∞\ensuremath{\xi}=\ensuremath{\infty}\ensuremathξ=\ensuremath∞. We show that at weak coupling these susceptibilities are parametrically smaller than for free fermions.
By the Ward identities, this vertex function must be related to quasiparticle residue ZZZ, which can be obtained independently from the fermionic self-energy. Rev. B 89, 045108 (2014)] and a ddd-wave charge-nematic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045110 (2010)]. We show th at for $s\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{wave}$ charge QCP the analysis is more straightforward and allows one to obtain the full quasiparticle interaction function (the Landau function) near a QCP. We show that all partial components of this function (Landau parameters) diverge near a QCP, in the same way as the effective mass m∗{m}^{*}m∗, except for the sss-wave charge component, which approaches $\ensuremath{-}1$. Consequently, the susceptibilities in all channels, except for the critical one, remain finite at a QCP, as they should.
We analyze the behavior of an itinerant two-dimensional Fermi system near a charge nematic (n=2)(n=2)(n=2) Pomeranchuk instability in terms of the Landau Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. We show that near the transition the system enters a critical FL regime, where ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\ensuremath{\sim}Z\ensuremath{\propto}{(1+{g}_{c,2})}^{1/2}$ and ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m\ensuremath{\approx}1/Z$, where gc,2{g}_{c,2}gc,2 is the n=2n=2n=2 charge Landau component which approaches $\ensuremath{-}1$ at the instability. We construct the Landau function of the critical FL and show that all but gc,2{g}_{c,2}gc,2 Landau components diverge at the critical point. We also show that in the critical regime the one-loop result for the self-energy $\ensuremath{\Sigma}(K)\ensuremath{\propto}\ensuremath{\int}dPG(P)D(K\ensuremath{-}P)$ is asymptotically exact if one identifies the effective interaction DDD with the RPA form of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$.

We consider Ward identities, which connect two-particle vertex functions to the self-energy, in the framework of a Hubbard model.
