Abstract

We analyze the three-point vertex function that describes the coupling of fermionic particle-hole pairs in a metal to spin or charge fluctuations at nonzero momentum. We consider Ward identities, which connect two-particle vertex functions to the self-energy, in the framework of a Hubbard model. These are derived using conservation laws following from local symmetries. The generators considered are the spin density and particle density. It is shown that at certain antiferromagnetic critical points, where the quasiparticle effective mass is diverging, the vertex function describing the coupling of particle-hole pairs to the spin density Fourier component at the antiferromagnetic wave vector is also divergent. Then we give an explicit calculation of the irreducible vertex function for the case of three-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and show that it is proportional to the diverging quasiparticle effective mass.

Quasiparticle interaction function in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid near an antiferromagnetic critical point

Andrey V. Chubukov, P. Wölfle

We present the expression for the quasiparticle vertex function ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ (proportional to the Landau interaction function) in a 2D Fermi liquid (FL) near an instability towards antiferromagnetism. This function is relevant in many ways in the context of metallic quantum criticality. Previous studies have found that near a quantum critical point, the system enters into a regime in which the fermionic self-energy is large near hot spots on the Fermi surface [points on the Fermi surface connected by the antiferromagnetic ordering vector ${q}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$] and has much stronger dependence on frequency than on momentum. We show that in this regime, which we termed a critical FL, the conventional random-phase-approximation- (RPA) type approach breaks down, and to properly calculate the vertex function one has to sum up an infinite series of terms which were explicitly excluded in the conventional treatment. Besides, we show that, to properly describe the spin component of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ even in an ordinary FL, one has to add Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) terms to the RPA vertex. We show that the total ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ is larger in a critical FL than in an ordinary FL, roughly by an extra power of magnetic correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$, which diverges at the quantum critical point. However, the enhancement of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ is highly nonuniform: It holds only when, for one of the two momentum variables, the distance from a hot spot along the Fermi surface is much larger than for the other one. This fact renders our case different from quantum criticality at small momentum, where the enhancement of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ was found to be homogeneous. We show that the charge and spin components of the total vertex function satisfy the universal relations following from the Ward identities related to the conservation of the particle number and the total spin. We show that in a critical FL, the Ward identity involves ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ taken between particles on the FS. We find that the charge and spin components of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ are identical to leading order in the magnetic correlation length. We use our results for ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ and for the quasiparticle residue to derive the Landau parameters ${F}_{c}^{l=0}={F}_{s}^{l=0}$, the density of states, and the uniform ($q=0$) charge and spin susceptibilities ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}^{l=0}={\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}^{l=0}$. We show that the density of states ${N}_{F}$ diverges as $log\ensuremath{\xi}$; however, ${F}_{c,s}^{l=0}$ also diverge as $log\ensuremath{\xi}$, such that the total ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c,s}^{(l=0)}\ensuremath{\propto}{N}_{F}/(1+{F}_{c}^{l=0})$ remain finite at $\ensuremath{\xi}=\ensuremath{\infty}$. We show that at weak coupling these susceptibilities are parametrically smaller than for free fermions.

Spin-fermion vertex from exact diagonalization of Hubbard clusters

Andreas Eichhorn

Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are a prime suspect for the superconducting glue in cuprates and nickelates. The minimal model reproducing the main physics of these systems is the single-orbital Hubbard model. Diagramatically, the scattering of electrons with these spin fluctuations can be described via a three-point propagator, where the coupling between these two quasiparticles - the propagator with amputated legs - is the Hedin vertex in the magnetic channel, or spin-fermion vertex. It has previously been shown that this coupling shows a rich dependence on fermionic momentum, notably a divergence close to half filling at the antinode. Exact diagonalization calculations for finite clusters in this work reproduce this momentum dependence. Furthermore, the known power law relation from DCA results between the Hedin vertex and the self-energy is also observed. Finally, a physical interpretation of the Hedin vertices' pole at the antinode, due to its established equivalence to the derivative of the self-energy w.r.t to an applied magnetic field is discussed for the 4x4 cluster.

Non-perturbative treatment of charge and spin fluctuations in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: Extended two-particle self-consistent approach

B. Davoudi, A.–M. S. Tremblay

We study the spin and charge fluctuations of the extended Hubbard model with on-site interaction $U$ and first neighbor interaction $V$ on the two-dimensional square lattice in the weak to intermediate coupling regime. We propose an extension of the two-particle self-consistent approximation that includes the effect of functional derivatives of the pair-correlation functions on irreducible spin and charge vertices. These functional derivatives were ignored in our previous work. We evaluate them assuming particle-hole symmetry. The resulting theory satisfies conservation laws and the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Our current results are in much better agreement with benchmark quantum Monte Carlo results. This theory allows us to reliably determine the crossover temperatures toward renormalized-classical regimes, and hence, the dominant instability as a function of $U$ and $V$. We have considered fillings $n=1$ and $n=0.75$. Either spin or charge fluctuations can dominate. The wave vector is self-determined by the approach.

Many-body local fields theory of quasiparticle properties in a three-dimensional electron liquid

George Simion, Gabriele F. Giuliani

We present a quantitative study of the quasiparticle properties of a three-dimensional electron Fermi liquid. Our approach is based on the theory of the many-body local field factors which we use to include vertex corrections associated with charge and spin fluctuations. Extensive use is made of the results of recent quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Several models for the wave-vector dependence of the spin-antisymmetric many-body local field factor ${G}_{\ensuremath{-}}$, for which no numerical results are currently available, are discussed and compared. Both the real and imaginary parts of the self-energy as well as the quasiparticle renormalization constant and the enhancement of the effective mass are calculated in the experimentally accessible range of electron densities. The results obtained by means of the on-shell approximation are critically compared with those given by a self-consistent solution of the Dyson equation. An ultraviolet catastrophe in the Coulomb-hole part of the self-energy is identified and a satisfactory resolution of this impasse is presented. The same many-body local field factors are also used to obtain the Landau interaction function. This allows us to obtain both the spin susceptibility and the proper compressibility of the system.

Fermi liquid near a q = 0 charge quantum critical point

R. David Mayrhofer, Andrey V. Chubukov, P. Wölfle

We analyze the quasiparticle interaction function (the fully dressed and antisymmetrized interaction between fermions) for a two-dimensional Fermi liquid at zero temperature close to a q=0 charge quantum critical point (QCP) in the $s\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{wave}$ channel (the one leading to phase separation). By the Ward identities, this vertex function must be related to quasiparticle residue $Z$, which can be obtained independently from the fermionic self-energy. We show that to satisfy these Ward identities, one needs to go beyond the standard diagrammatic formulation of Fermi-liquid theory and include a series of additional contributions to the vertex function. These contributions are not present in a conventional Fermi liquid, but do emerge near a QCP, where the effective 4-fermion interaction is mediated by a soft dynamical boson. We demonstrate explicitly that including these terms restores the Ward identity. Our analysis is built on previous studies of the vertex function near an antiferromag netic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 89, 045108 (2014)] and a $d$-wave charge-nematic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045110 (2010)]. We show th at for $s\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{wave}$ charge QCP the analysis is more straightforward and allows one to obtain the full quasiparticle interaction function (the Landau function) near a QCP. We show that all partial components of this function (Landau parameters) diverge near a QCP, in the same way as the effective mass ${m}^{*}$, except for the $s$-wave charge component, which approaches $\ensuremath{-}1$. Consequently, the susceptibilities in all channels, except for the critical one, remain finite at a QCP, as they should.

Coupling of Density and Spin Fluctuations to Quasiparticles in a Fermi Liquid

D J Amit, Joseph W. Kane, H. Wagner

The general interaction between quasiparticles and particle-hole excitations in a neutral Fermi system at $T=0$ is investigated. Density and spin-density fluctuations and collective modes are treated on an equal basis. Use is made of Ward identities to relate the vertex function $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ to the quasiparticle self-energy $\ensuremath{\Sigma}$, and logarithmic corrections to the self-energy are obtained. The coefficients of the logarithmic terms are calculated analytically in terms of known Landau parameters.
