Abstract

We analyze the behavior of an itinerant two-dimensional Fermi system near a charge nematic $(n=2)$ Pomeranchuk instability in terms of the Landau Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. A key object of our study is the fully renormalized vertex function ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$, related to the Landau interaction function. We derive ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$ for a model case of the long-range interaction in the nematic channel. Already within the random-phase approximation (RPA), the vertex is singular near the instability. The full vertex, obtained by resumming the ladder series composed of the RPA vertices, differs from the RPA result by a multiplicative renormalization factor ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, related to the single-particle residue $Z$ and effective-mass renormalization ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m$. We employ the Pitaevski-Landau identities, which express the derivatives of the self-energy in terms of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$, to obtain and solve a set of coupled nonlinear equations for ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, $Z$, and ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m$. We show that near the transition the system enters a critical FL regime, where ${Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\ensuremath{\sim}Z\ensuremath{\propto}{(1+{g}_{c,2})}^{1/2}$ and ${m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m\ensuremath{\approx}1/Z$, where ${g}_{c,2}$ is the $n=2$ charge Landau component which approaches $\ensuremath{-}1$ at the instability. We construct the Landau function of the critical FL and show that all but ${g}_{c,2}$ Landau components diverge at the critical point. We also show that in the critical regime the one-loop result for the self-energy $\ensuremath{\Sigma}(K)\ensuremath{\propto}\ensuremath{\int}dPG(P)D(K\ensuremath{-}P)$ is asymptotically exact if one identifies the effective interaction $D$ with the RPA form of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$.

Electron self-energy near a nematic quantum critical point

Markus Garst, Andrey V. Chubukov

We consider an isotropic Fermi liquid in two dimensions near the $n=2$ Pomeranchuk instability in the charge channel. The order parameter is a quadrupolar stress tensor with two bosonic shear modes with polarizations longitudinal and transverse to the quadrupolar momentum tensor. Longitudinal and transverse bosonic modes are characterized by dynamical exponents ${z}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}=3$ and ${z}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=2$, respectively. Previous studies have found that such a system exhibits multiscale quantum criticality with two different energy scales $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}{z}_{\ensuremath{\parallel},\ensuremath{\perp}}}$, where $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length. We study the impact of the multiple energy scales on the electron Green's function. The interaction with the critical ${z}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}=3$ mode is known to give rise to a local self-energy that develops a non-Fermi-liquid form, $\ensuremath{\Sigma}(\ensuremath{\omega})\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2/3}$ for frequencies larger than the energy scale $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. We find that the exchange of transverse ${z}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=2$ fluctuations leads to logarithmically singular renormalizations of the quasiparticle residue $Z$ and the vertex $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$. We derive and solve renormalization-group equations for the flow of $Z$ and $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$, and show that the system develops an anomalous dimension at the nematic quantum critical point (QCP). As a result, the spectral function at a fixed $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and varying $k$ has a non-Lorentzian form. Away from the QCP, we find that the flow of $Z$ is cut at the energy scale ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\text{FL}}\ensuremath{\propto}{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, associated with the $z=1$ dynamics of electrons. The ${z}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=2$ energy scale, $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$, affects the flow of $Z$ only if one includes into the theory self-interaction of transverse fluctuations.

Quasiparticle interaction function in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid near an antiferromagnetic critical point

Andrey V. Chubukov, P. Wölfle

We present the expression for the quasiparticle vertex function ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ (proportional to the Landau interaction function) in a 2D Fermi liquid (FL) near an instability towards antiferromagnetism. This function is relevant in many ways in the context of metallic quantum criticality. Previous studies have found that near a quantum critical point, the system enters into a regime in which the fermionic self-energy is large near hot spots on the Fermi surface [points on the Fermi surface connected by the antiferromagnetic ordering vector ${q}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$] and has much stronger dependence on frequency than on momentum. We show that in this regime, which we termed a critical FL, the conventional random-phase-approximation- (RPA) type approach breaks down, and to properly calculate the vertex function one has to sum up an infinite series of terms which were explicitly excluded in the conventional treatment. Besides, we show that, to properly describe the spin component of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ even in an ordinary FL, one has to add Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) terms to the RPA vertex. We show that the total ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ is larger in a critical FL than in an ordinary FL, roughly by an extra power of magnetic correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$, which diverges at the quantum critical point. However, the enhancement of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ is highly nonuniform: It holds only when, for one of the two momentum variables, the distance from a hot spot along the Fermi surface is much larger than for the other one. This fact renders our case different from quantum criticality at small momentum, where the enhancement of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ was found to be homogeneous. We show that the charge and spin components of the total vertex function satisfy the universal relations following from the Ward identities related to the conservation of the particle number and the total spin. We show that in a critical FL, the Ward identity involves ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ taken between particles on the FS. We find that the charge and spin components of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ are identical to leading order in the magnetic correlation length. We use our results for ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\omega}}({K}_{F},{P}_{F})$ and for the quasiparticle residue to derive the Landau parameters ${F}_{c}^{l=0}={F}_{s}^{l=0}$, the density of states, and the uniform ($q=0$) charge and spin susceptibilities ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c}^{l=0}={\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}^{l=0}$. We show that the density of states ${N}_{F}$ diverges as $log\ensuremath{\xi}$; however, ${F}_{c,s}^{l=0}$ also diverge as $log\ensuremath{\xi}$, such that the total ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c,s}^{(l=0)}\ensuremath{\propto}{N}_{F}/(1+{F}_{c}^{l=0})$ remain finite at $\ensuremath{\xi}=\ensuremath{\infty}$. We show that at weak coupling these susceptibilities are parametrically smaller than for free fermions.

Pomeranchuk-nematic instability in the presence of a weak magnetic field

Daniel Gustavo Barci, Daniel Reyes

We analyze a two-dimensional Pomeranchuk-nematic instability, trigger by the Landau parameter ${F}_{2}<0$, in the presence of a small magnetic field. Using Landau Fermi-liquid theory in the isotropic phase, we analyze the collective modes near the quantum critical point ${F}_{2}=\ensuremath{-}1,{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}=0$ (where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$ is the cyclotron frequency). We focus on the effects of parity symmetry breaking on the Fermi-surface deformation. We show that the linear response approximation of the Landau-Silin equation is not sufficient to study the critical regime and it is necessary to compute corrections at least of order ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}^{2}$. Identifying the slowest oscillation mode in the disordered phase, we compute the phase diagram for the isotropic/nematic phase transition in terms of ${F}_{2}$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$.

Fermi-Liquid Theory and Pomeranchuk Instabilities: Fundamentals and New Developments

A. V. Chubukov, A. Klein, D. L. Maslov

Abstract This paper is a short review on the foundations and recent advances in the microscopic Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. We demonstrate that this theory is built on five identities, which follow from conservation of the total charge (particle number), spin, and momentum in a translationally and SU(2)-invariant FL. These identities allow one to express the effective mass and quasiparticle residue in terms of an exact vertex function and also impose constraints on the “quasiparticle” and “incoherent” (or “low-energy” and “high-energy”) contributions to the observable quantities. Such constraints forbid certain Pomeranchuk instabilities of a FL, e.g., towards phases with order parameters that coincide with charge and spin currents. We provide diagrammatic derivations of these constraints and of the general (Leggett) formula for the susceptibility in arbitrary angular momentum channel, and illustrate the general relations through simple examples treated in perturbation theory.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior from Critical Fermi Surface Fluctuations

Walter Metzner, Luca Dell’Anna

Interactions in Fermi systems can generate a Pomeranchuk instability leading to orientational symmetry breaking, that is, nematic order. In a metallic system close to such an instability the Fermi surface is easily deformed by anisotropic perturbations and exhibits enhanced collective fluctuations. We analyze fluctuation effects in the quantum critical regime near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability in two dimensions. Density correlations with a d-wave form factor and the dynamical forward scattering interaction diverge near the instability. The singular forward scattering leads to large self-energy contributions, which destroy Fermi liquid behavior over the whole Fermi surface except at “cold spots” on the Brillouin zone diagonal. The decay rate of single-particle excitations, which is related to the width of the peaks in the spectral function, exceeds the excitation energy in the low-energy limit. The dispersion of the spectra flattens strongly near those portions of the Fermi surface which are remote from the zone diagonal. The decay rate for DC transport is linear in temperature except at the cold spots. We discuss the possible relevance of d-wave Fermi surface fluctuations for the “strange metal” behavior observed in the normal phase of cuprates.

We analyze the behavior of an itinerant two-dimensional Fermi system near a charge nematic (n=2)(n=2)(n=2) Pomeranchuk instability in terms of the Landau Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. A key object of our study is the fully renormalized vertex function \ensuremathΓ\ensuremathΩ{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}\ensuremathΓ\ensuremathΩ, related to the Landau interaction function. We derive \ensuremathΓ\ensuremathΩ{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}\ensuremathΓ\ensuremathΩ for a model case of the long-range interaction in the nematic channel. We show that near the transition the system enters a critical FL regime, where Z\ensuremathΓ\ensuremath∼Z\ensuremath∝(1+gc,2)1/2{Z}_{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\ensuremath{\sim}Z\ensuremath{\propto}{(1+{g}_{c,2})}^{1/2}Z\ensuremathΓ\ensuremath∼Z\ensuremath∝(1+gc,2)1/2 and m\ensuremath∗/m\ensuremath≈1/Z{m}^{\ensuremath{\ast}}/m\ensuremath{\approx}1/Zm\ensuremath∗/m\ensuremath≈1/Z, where gc,2{g}_{c,2}gc,2 is the n=2n=2n=2 charge Landau component which approaches \ensuremath−1\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath−1 at the instability. We construct the Landau function of the critical FL and show that all but gc,2{g}_{c,2}gc,2 Landau components diverge at the critical point. We also show that in the critical regime the one-loop result for the self-energy \ensuremathΣ(K)\ensuremath∝\ensuremath∫dPG(P)D(K\ensuremath−P)\ensuremath{\Sigma}(K)\ensuremath{\propto}\ensuremath{\int}dPG(P)D(K\ensuremath{-}P)\ensuremathΣ(K)\ensuremath∝\ensuremath∫dPG(P)D(K\ensuremath−P) is asymptotically exact if one identifies the effective interaction DDD with the RPA form of \ensuremathΓ\ensuremathΩ{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{\ensuremath{\Omega}}\ensuremathΓ\ensuremathΩ.
We consider an isotropic Fermi liquid in two dimensions near the n=2n=2n=2 Pomeranchuk instability in the charge channel.
