Some remarks on quasi-Hermitian operators

Abstract

A quasi-Hermitian operator is an operator that is similar to its adjoint in some sense, via a metric operator, i.e., a strictly positive self-adjoint operator. Whereas those metric operators are in general assumed to be bounded, we analyze the structure generated by unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. Following our previous work, we introduce several generalizations of the notion of similarity between operators. Then we explore systematically the various types of quasi-Hermitian operators, bounded or not. Finally, we discuss their application in the so-called pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics.

Partial inner product spaces, metric operators and generalized hermiticity

Jean-Pierre Antoine, Camillo Trapanı

Motivated by the recent developments of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics, we analyze the structure of unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. It turns out that such operators generate a canonical lattice of Hilbert spaces, that is, the simplest case of a partial inner product space ( pip -space). Next, we introduce several generalizations of the notion of similarity between operators and explore to what extent they preserve spectral properties. Then we apply some of the previous results to operators on a particular pip -space, namely a scale of Hilbert spaces generated by a metric operator. Finally, we reformulate the notion of pseudo-Hermitian operators in the preceding formalism.

Pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics with unbounded metric operators

Ali Mostafazadeh

I extend the formulation of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics to η(+)-pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian operators H with an unbounded metric operator η(+). In particular, I give the details of the construction of the physical Hilbert space, observables and equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian for the case that H has a real and discrete spectrum and its eigenvectors belong to the domain of η(+) and consequently √η(+).

THE METRIC OPERATORS FOR PSEUDO-HERMITIAN HAMILTONIAN

Wenhua Wang, ZhengLi Chen, W. Li

Abstract The Hamiltonian of a conventional quantum system is Hermitian, which ensures real spectra of the Hamiltonian and unitary evolution of the system. However, real spectra are just the necessary conditions for a Hamiltonian to be Hermitian. In this paper, we discuss the metric operators for pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian which is similar to its adjoint. We first present some properties of the metric operators for pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians and obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for an invertible operator to be a metric operator for a given pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. When the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian has real spectra, we provide a new method such that any given metric operator can be transformed into the same positive-definite one and the new inner product with respect to the positive-definite metric operator is well defined. Finally, we illustrate the results obtained with an example.

Quantum physics with non-Hermitian operators

Carl M. Bender, Andreas Fring, Uwe Günther +1 more

The main motivation behind the call for this special issue was to gather recent results, developments and open problems in quantum physics with non-Hermitian operators. There have been previous special issues in this journal [1, 2] and elsewhere on this subject. The intention of this issue is to reflect the current state of this rapidly-developing field. It has therefore been open to all contributions containing new results on non-Hermitian theories that are explicitly -symmetric and/or pseudo-Hermitian or quasi-Hermitian. In the last decade these types of systems have proved to be viable self-consistent physical theories with well defined unitary time-evolution and real spectra. As the large number of responses demonstrates, this is a rapidly evolving field of research. A consensus has been reached regarding most of the fundamental problems, and the general ideas and techniques are now readily being employed in many areas of physics. Nonetheless, this issue still contains some treatments of a more general nature regarding the spectral analysis of these models, in particular, the physics of the exceptional points, the breaking of the -symmetry, an interpretation of negative energies and the consistent implementation of the WKB analysis. This issue also contains a treatment of a scattering theory associated with these types of systems, weak measurements, coherent states, decoherence, unbounded metric operators and the inclusion of domain issues to obtain well defined self-adjoint theories. Contributions in the form of applications of the general ideas include: studies of classical shock-waves and tunnelling, supersymmetric models, spin chain models, models with ring structure, random matrix models, the Pauli equation, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, quasi-exactly solvable models, integrable models such as the Calogero model, Bose–Einstein condensates, thermodynamics, nonlinear oligomers, quantum catastrophes, the Landau–Zener problem and pseudo-Fermions. Applications close to experimental realization are proposed in optics, including short light pulse models, waveguides and laser systems, and also in electronics. We hope that this issue will become a valuable reference and inspiration for the broader scientific community working in mathematical and theoretical physics. Quasi-Hermitian quantum mechanics and a new class of user-friendly matrix Hamiltonians

Olaf Lechtenfeld, Miloslav Znojil

In the conventional Schrödinger's formulation of quantum mechanics the unitary evolution of a state $ψ$ is controlled, in Hilbert space ${\cal L}$, by a Hamiltonian $\mathfrak{h}$ which must be self-adjoint. In the recent, ``quasi-Hermitian'' reformulation of the theory one replaces $\mathfrak{h}$ by its isospectral but non-Hermitian avatar $H = Ω^{-1}\mathfrak{h}Ω$ with $Ω^\daggerΩ= Θ\neq I$. Although acting in another, manifestly unphysical Hilbert space ${\cal H}$, the amended Hamiltonian $H \neq H^\dagger$ can be perceived as self-adjoint with respect to the amended inner-product metric $Θ$. In our paper motivated by a generic technical ``user-unfriendliness'' of the non-Hermiticity of $H$ we introduce and describe a specific new family of Hamiltonians $H$ for which the metrics $Θ$ become available in closed form.
