Self-consistent basis generation scheme for polaron and bipolaron systems

Abstract

We have developed a self-consistent scheme of generating variational basis based on the exact diagonalization, which can be applied efficiently to various types of electron-phonon systems. This scheme is quite general and brings down the size of the variational space by an order of magnitude or even more in some cases to reproduce the most precise ground state energies and correlation functions available in the literature. This method has enormous potential for application to systems with more electrons or in higher dimensions, which are still beyond the reach of exact diagonalization just because of the sheer size of their variational space needed to get reasonably convergent results.

Lattice polaron formation: Effects of nonscreened electron-phonon interaction

Holger Fehske, Jan Loos, Gerhard Wellein

We explore the quasiparticle properties of lattice polarons on the basis of a quite general electron-phonon Hamiltonian with a long-range displacement-type interaction. To treat the dynamical quantum phonons without significant loss of accuracy we adapt an exact Lanczos diagonalization method and compute various static and dynamical quantities, such as the electron-lattice correlation function, the polaron band dispersion, the effective polaron mass, the kinetic energy, the single-particle spectral function, and the optical conductivity, on finite one-dimensional lattices for a wide range of model parameters. We compare the results with those obtained for the standard Holstein model with short-range electron-phonon interaction only.

Variational calculations of bipolaron binding energies

F. Bassani, Mario Geddo, Giuseppe Iadonisi +1 more

The energies of bipolaron states in three- and two-dimensional systems are calculated variationally, treating the electron-phonon interaction in the Fr\"ohlich approximation, and separating the relative motion from the center-of-mass motion. The bipolaron is bound if the electron-phonon coupling constant \ensuremath{\alpha} is larger than 6 in three dimensions and 2 in two dimensions, provided the ratio \ensuremath{\eta}=${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\infty}}}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}}_{0}$ is smaller than a critical value which depends on \ensuremath{\alpha}. The theory yields the free-polaron energies as given in the Lee, Low, and Pines approximation for arbitrary values of the electron-phonon coupling constant \ensuremath{\alpha}. For \ensuremath{\alpha} larger than \ensuremath{\sim}10 and \ensuremath{\sim}4 in the three- and two-dimensional cases, respectively, the lowest free-polaron self-energies are obtained in the strong-coupling approach; it is shown that a trial harmonic envelope wave function, localized both in the center-of-mass and relative coordinates, with a coherent phonon state gives a bound localized bipolaron state of lower energy. It is interesting for application to high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ superconductivity that the bipolaron bounds more easily in two dimensions than in three, and that the mean value of the pair radius is a few angstroms. Furthermore, bipolaron states obtained when the linear total momentum is conserved have intrinsically high mobility, which is also an important condition to make the bipolaron mechanism consistent with high-temperature superconductivity.

A new variational calculation for N-dimensional polarons in the strong-coupling limit

Chen Qinghu, Fang Minghu, Zhang Qirui +2 more

A novel variational approach is presented for the calculation of the ground-state energy of the polaron in arbitrary N dimensions in the strong-coupling limit. By using the phonon coherent state to represent the wavefunction of phonons, a self-consistent integro-differential equation for the electron wavefunction is derived. The calculated results of the ground-state energy for N = 1, 2 and 3 agree well with the best results in the literature. It is also found that, for arbitrary N, the present results are less than the Feynman path integral ones by small percentages. It is proposed that this approach should be universal for systems involving polarons in the strong-coupling regime.

Holstein polaron

J. Bonča, S. A. Trugman, I. Batistić

We describe a variational method to solve the Holstein model for an electron coupled to dynamical, quantum phonons on an infinite lattice. The variational space can be systematically expanded to achieve high accuracy with modest computational resources (12-digit accuracy for the one-dimensional polaron energy at intermediate coupling). We compute ground-state and low-lying excited-state properties of the model at continuous values of the wave vector k in essentially all parameter regimes. Our results for the polaron energy band, effective mass, and correlation functions compare favorably with those of other numerical techniques, including the density-matrix renormalization-group technique, the global-local method, and the exact diagonalization technique. We find a phase transition for the first excited state between a bound and unbound system of a polaron and an additional phonon excitation. The phase transition is also treated in strong-coupling perturbation theory.

Two-site polaron problem: a perturbation approach with variational basis states

A. N. Das, Jayita Chatterjee

A convergent perturbation method using modified Lang Firsov transformation is developed for a two-site single-polaron system. The method is applicable for the entire range of the electron-phonon coupling strength. The single-electron energies, oscillator wave functions and correlation functions, calculated using this method, are in good agreement with the exact results. 2

Many-body Green’s function theory for electron-phonon interactions: Ground state properties of the Holstein dimer

Niko Säkkinen, Yang Peng, Heiko Appel +1 more

We study ground-state properties of a two-site, two-electron Holstein model describing two molecules coupled indirectly via electron-phonon interaction by using both exact diagonalization and self-consistent diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory. The Hartree and self-consistent Born approximations used in the present work are studied at different levels of self-consistency. The governing equations are shown to exhibit multiple solutions when the electron-phonon interaction is sufficiently strong, whereas at smaller interactions, only a single solution is found. The additional solutions at larger electron-phonon couplings correspond to symmetry-broken states with inhomogeneous electron densities. A comparison to exact results indicates that this symmetry breaking is strongly correlated with the formation of a bipolaron state in which the two electrons prefer to reside on the same molecule. The results further show that the Hartree and partially self-consistent Born solutions obtained by enforcing symmetry do not compare well with exact energetics, while the fully self-consistent Born approximation improves the qualitative and quantitative agreement with exact results in the same symmetric case. This together with a presented natural occupation number analysis supports the conclusion that the fully self-consistent approximation describes partially the bipolaron crossover. These results contribute to better understanding how these approximations cope with the strong localizing effect of the electron-phonon interaction.
