A new variational calculation for N-dimensional polarons in the strong-coupling limit

Abstract

A novel variational approach is presented for the calculation of the ground-state energy of the polaron in arbitrary N dimensions in the strong-coupling limit. By using the phonon coherent state to represent the wavefunction of phonons, a self-consistent integro-differential equation for the electron wavefunction is derived. The calculated results of the ground-state energy for N = 1, 2 and 3 agree well with the best results in the literature. It is also found that, for arbitrary N, the present results are less than the Feynman path integral ones by small percentages. It is proposed that this approach should be universal for systems involving polarons in the strong-coupling regime.

Polaron ground-state energy inddimensions

Gurjav Ganbold, Гарий Владимирович Ефимов

The polaron path integral introduced by Feynman is generalized to the case of an electron moving in d space dimensions. A scheme of systematic calculations of the obtained path integral is developed to estimate the ground-state energy of the polaron in the same way for different values of the electron-phonon coupling constant \ensuremath{\alpha}. The leading-order term in this approach yields an upper bound to the polaron self-energy and improves Feynman's variational estimates for d=2 and d=3. A scaling relation between polaron self-energies for different space dimensions is obtained for this term. The next correction to this estimation is calculated by numerical integration for d=2 and d=3.

Coherent-state ansatz for the Holstein polaron in one and two dimensions

Connor M. Walsh, Igor Boettcher, F. Marsiglio

The Holstein model often serves as an archetype for electron-phonon interactions and polaron formation in solids. However, precise descriptions of the Holstein polaron are difficult when the phonon frequency is small and the electron-phonon coupling is strong, due to the presence of many phonons in the ground-state. We present a semi-analytical approximation that consists of a variational ansatz with clouds of phonons surrounding the electron in the form of coherent states. This becomes particularly simple and exact in the Lang-Firsov limit. We determine the domain of validity away from this limit, and further explore the improvement achieved with a removal of the requirement that the phonon clouds form coherent states. Both approximations work extremely well for the ground-state energy at strong coupling, and both work surprisingly well also at weak-coupling. For the effective mass, however, both approximations have difficulty, particularly in the crossover region. Moreover, the coherent-state ansatz (CSA) retains an unphysical jump in the crossover region. Nonetheless, the CSA provides a simple and intuitive picture of the polaron ground-state wavefunction, and in addition predicts accurate values for the ground-state energy.

Free Energy of a Polaron in a Strong Magnetic Field

Motohiko Saitoh

New results for the free energy of a polaron in a strong magnetic field are presented. The method used here is the extended version of Feynman's pathintegral formalism in which the most general quadratic form containing an infinite number of variational parameters is employed to simulate the variational trial action. A set of nonlinear integral equations is established to determine the upper bound for the free energy in the entire range of electron-phonon coupling constants, temperatures and magnetic fields. Analytical solutions are provided for some limiting cases of interest, and are compared critically with existing calculations of the ground-state energy at zero temperature. The free energy thus obtained is exact to the lowest order in the coupling constant and provides the good interpolation up to the strong coupling regime.

Quasi-particle characteristics of the one-dimensional polaron

Gurjav Ganbold

The main quasi-particle characteristics of the one-dimensional polaron are estimated within and beyond the most general Gaussian approximation at arbitrary electron-phonon coupling. We have derived explicitly the ground-state energy and the effective mass in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. For arbitrary coupling, the Gaussian leading-order term of the polaron self energy improves the corresponding Feynman estimate and represents the lowest upper bound available. We have calculated the next non-Gaussian corrections. Taking into account systematically higher-order corrections does not perturb considerably the obtained results.

Extending the Feynman variational principle and analytical methods to lattice polarons

Serghei N. Klimin, Jacques Tempere, Matthew Houtput +6 more

We develop and compare several analytical approximations for the ground state and zero-temperature polaron dispersion in finite-width, nonparabolic conduction bands. The main focus of the work is an extension of the Feynman variational method to a tight-binding lattice, where the effective-mass approximation is no longer applicable. The resulting variational formulation is not restricted to a specific phonon dispersion or electron-phonon interaction and provides a uniform description across weak-, intermediate-, and strong-coupling regimes. In addition, we revisit and generalize other analytical approaches traditionally formulated for continuum polarons, including canonical transformations and self-consistent Wigner-Brillouin-type approximations. For lattice polarons, these methods exhibit qualitative features absent in the continuum case, such as a nontrivial connection between weak- and strong-coupling limits. We show that an improved Wigner-Brillouin scheme yields a momentum-dependent polaron self-energy free of resonances and in good agreement with numerically exact results. All methods are applied to the Holstein model on a tight-binding lattice and are benchmarked against numerically exact calculations, including diagrammatic Monte Carlo (both our calculations and preceding works) and exact diagonalization results. Furthermore, the analytical approaches are extended to polarons with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling, providing a stringent test of their applicability in systems with nontrivial band structure. Our results demonstrate that the modified Feynman variational method yields ground-state energies and dispersions with accuracy comparable to, and in many cases exceeding, that of other established analytical approaches. The developed framework offers a versatile and reliable analytical description of lattice polarons beyond the continuum approximation.

An extensive calculation of the properties of a one-dimensional polaron

Chen Qinghu, Wang Kelin, Wan Shaolong

A refined approach where the wave function is gradually improved is developed in the one-dimensional (1D) large-Frohlich-polaron problem. The results for the ground-state energy, the effective mass, and the average number of virtual phonons are obtained for a wide range of the coupling constant It, and are in agreement with those of the Feynman path-integral formalism. In addition, in the weak-coupling limit, the expansions of these observables in powers of the coupling constant are exactly calculated up to the alpha 3 -term. They are E=- alpha -0.06066 alpha 2 -0.00844 alpha 3 , m*=1+0.5 alpha +0.19194 alpha 2 +0.06912 alpha 3 , and N=0.5 alpha +0.12132 alpha 2 +0.029540 alpha 3 , which agree with the known results of the fourth-order perturbation theory.
