Electromagnetically-induced-transparency–like phenomenon with two atomic ensembles in a cavity

Abstract

We study the spectra of collective low excitations of two atomic ensembles which couple with a single-mode cavity field. When the left ensemble is driven with an external optical field, its corresponding response spectrum to the incident optical light shows an electromagnetically-induced-transparency--like (EIT-like) phenomenon when the layers are arranged in the sequence of node antinode but not in the sequence of antinode node. In the case of antinode-antinode sequence, the response spectrum shows an EIT-like phenomenon with two transparent windows. We also investigate the fluctuation spectra of the atomic collective excitation modes and show similar EIT-like phenomena.

Electromagnetically-induced-transparency–like phenomenon with resonant meta-atoms in a cavity

Yueyun Hu, Wenxing Liu, Yong Sun +6 more

We experimentally investigate a cavity in which two resonant meta-atoms are embedded. Its corresponding response spectrum to an incident microwave shows an electromagnetically-induced-transparency--like (EIT-like) phenomenon when the meta-atoms are arranged in the sequence node-antinode but not in the sequence antinode-node. We carry out in situ measurements of the cavity field to bring physical insight into this asymmetric response, and use the transfer matrix method joined with coupled-mode theory to give a quantitative analysis. Finally, we demonstrate the unidirectional EIT-like behavior in a two-port design. Our results may benefit novel nonreciprocal devices in the future by exploring the nonlinearity of the meta-atoms with this asymmetric arrangement.

Vacuum induced transparency and slow light phenomena in a two-level atomic ensemble controlled by a cavity

Yujie Guo, Wenjie Nie

We study the optical properties of a two-level atomic ensemble controlled by a high-finesse cavity. Even though the cavity is initially in the vacuum state in the absence of external driving, the probe response of the atomic ensemble can be dramatically modified. When the collectively enhanced atom–cavity coupling is strong enough and the cavity decay rate is much smaller than the atomic damping rate, an electromagnetically induced transparency-like coherent phenomenon emerges with a dip absorption for the response of the two-level atoms in the cavity without driving, and thus is called vacuum induced transparency. We also show the slow light with very low group velocity in such an atomic ensemble.

Vibration induced transparency and absorption with two ion ensembles in a linear trap

Wenjun Shao, Jian Li

We study the spectra of collective low excitations of two atomic ion ensembles which are confined in a liner trap by addressing lases. When the left ensemble is driven by an external optical field, its corresponding response spectrum to the incident optical light shows a vibration-induced transparency phenomenon when the detuning of the laser addressing the ion is tuned to the first red sideband. In the case of the detuning tuned to the first blue sideband, the response spectrum shows a conversion from the absorption peak to the transparency window. Furthermore, we investigate the fluctuation spectra of the collective excitation modes of ion ensemble and show the similar phenomena.

Physical interpretation for the correlation spectra of electromagnetically-induced-transparency resonances

D. Felinto, Luciano Soares da Cruz, Rafael Alves De Oliveira +5 more

The phenomenon called Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) may induce different types of correlation between two optical fields interacting with an ensemble of atoms. It is presently well known, for example, that in the vicinity of an EIT resonance the dominant correlations at low powers turn into anti-correlations as power increases. Such correlation spectra present striking power-broadening-independent features, with the best condition for measuring the characteristic linewidth occurring at the highest powers. In the present work we investigate the physical mechanisms responsible for this set of observations. Our approach is first to reproduce these effects in a better controlled experimental setup: a cold atomic ensemble, obtained from a magneto-optical trap. The results from this conceptually simpler system were then compared to a correspondingly simpler theory, which clearly relates the observed features to the interplay between two key aspects of EIT: the transparency itself and the steep normal dispersion near two-photon resonance.

Optomechanical electromagnetically induced transparency in inverted atomic configurations: a comparative view

A. Asghari Nejad, Hassan Randjbar Askari, Hamid Reza Baghshahi

Abstract We study electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which is affected by cavity optomechanics in different atomic configurations ( V and Λ ). The cavity mode is depicted as a probe field, and a classical driving field is applied to the atomic medium as the control laser in each system. Interaction between the cavity mode, atomic media and the oscillating mirror of the cavity can change the susceptibility of the atomic ensemble. Equations of motion demonstrate a system of nonlinear equations for each system. Nonlinearity of equations is a result of interaction between the cavity mode and atomic transitions. The equations are solved via a perturbation method. The results show two different aspects of atom-assisted optomechanics in V -type system: a common transparency window and an amplifying process in a transparency window that does not occur in the Λ configuration, notable as a considerable difference between the proposed systems. It is shown that classical field detuning leads to different changes in the susceptibility of both systems; other values of cavity detuning, except in the resonant case, can guarantee the occurrence of EIT in the system. For the initial value of the cavity field, a negative region appears in absorption spectrum of the V -type atomic ensemble. Meanwhile, the Λ configuration does not show a such process. According to our results, in the appearance of the transparency window, the position of movable mirror changes significantly.
