Abstract

We demonstrate a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independent, intrinsically pure, heralded single photons from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) at telecommunication wavelength. A visibility of $85.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8.3%$ was achieved without using any bandpass filter. Thanks to the group-velocity-matched SPDC and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), the fourfold coincidence counts are one order higher than that in the previous experiments. The combination of bright single-photon sources and SNSPDs is a crucial step for future practical quantum infocommunication systems at telecommunication wavelength.

Nonclassical two-photon interference between independent telecommunication light pulses converted by difference-frequency generation

Rikizo Ikuta, Toshiki Kobayashi, Hiroshi Kato +9 more

We experimentally demonstrated the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between two photons after visible-to-telecommunication wavelength conversion. In the experiment, we prepared a heralded single photon by using spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) and the other photon from a weak laser source at 780 nm. We converted the wavelength of both photons to the telecommunication wavelength of 1522 nm by using difference-frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate, and then observed the HOM interference between the photons. The observed visibility is $0.76\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12$ which clearly shows the nonclassical interference of the two photons. The high-visibility interference is an important step for fiber-based quantum communications of photons generated from visible-photon emitters.

Intrinsic pure single-photon source and its nonclassical interference with weak coherent photons

Rui‐Bo Jin, Jun Zhang, Ryōsuke Shimizu +6 more

We report the generation of pure single‐photon state in the process of spontaneous parametric down‐conversion with extended phase‐matching condition. The measured joint spectral distribution of the photon pairs shows a high purity of the state we prepared. A visibility of 89.4± 0.5% was achieved without any spectral filtering in a nonclassical Hong‐Ou‐Mandel interference between pure heralded single photons and weak coherent photons.

Two-photon quantum interference in the 1.5 μm telecommunication band

Seok-Beom Cho, Tae-Gon Noh

We report on two-photon quantum interference experiments in the standard telecommunication band. Two identical photons in the 1.5 mm wavelength band were generated in spatially separated modes by a type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion process, and injected into a fiber-optic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. Two-photon interference patterns of dip and spatial beating in the coincidence counting rate were observed by varying the difference in optical path lengths. The visibilities obtained in the net coincidences were close to the theoretical value of 100%. The raw visibilities were also well above the classical limit.

Ultra-fast Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry via temporal filtering

Yoshiaki Tsujimoto, Kentaro Wakui, Mikio Fujiwara +2 more

Heralded single photons (HSPs) generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are useful resource to achieve various photonic quantum information processing. Given a large-scale experiment which needs multiple HSPs, increasing the generation rate with suppressing higher-order pair creation is desirable. One of the promising ways is to use a pump laser with a GHz-order repetition rate. In such a high repetition rate regime, however, single-photon detectors can only partially identify the pulses. Hence, we develop a simple model to consider that effect on the spectral purity, and experimentally demonstrate a high-visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independent HSPs generated by SPDC with 3.2 GHz-repetition-rate mode-locked pump pulses. The observed visibility of 0.88(3) is in good agreement with our theoretical model.

Quantum interference between autonomous single-photon sources from Doppler-broadened atomic ensembles

Taek Jeong, Yoon-Seok Lee, Jiho Park +2 more

To realize a quantum network based on quantum entanglement swapping, bright and completely autonomous sources are essentially required. Here, we experimentally demonstrate Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) quantum interference between two independent bright photon pairs generated via the spontaneous four-wave mixing in Doppler-broadened ladder-type 87Rb atoms. Bright autonomous heralded single photons are operated in a continuous-wave (CW) mode with no synchronization or supplemental filters. The four-fold photon coincidence counts per hour correspond to 5000 events for a temporal range of 10 ns, one order higher than those of previously reported for autonomous single photons. We observe an HOM dip with 83% visibility with the two autonomous heralded single photons for an effective measurement time of 900 s. The achievement of the HOM interference between the two bright autonomous photon-pair sources has made an important step towards a practical scalable quantum network.
