Abstract

We report the generation of pure single‐photon state in the process of spontaneous parametric down‐conversion with extended phase‐matching condition. The measured joint spectral distribution of the photon pairs shows a high purity of the state we prepared. A visibility of 89.4± 0.5% was achieved without any spectral filtering in a nonclassical Hong‐Ou‐Mandel interference between pure heralded single photons and weak coherent photons.

Heralded Generation of Ultrafast Single Photons in Pure Quantum States

Peter J. Mosley, Jeff S. Lundeen, Brian J. Smith +4 more

We present an experimental demonstration of heralded single photons prepared in pure quantum states from a parametric down-conversion source. It is shown that, through controlling the modal structure of the photon pair emission, one can generate pairs in factorable states and thence eliminate the need for spectral filters in multiple-source interference schemes. Indistinguishable heralded photons were generated in two independent spectrally engineered sources and Hong-Ou-Mandel interference observed between them without spectral filters. The measured visibility of 94.4% sets a minimum bound on the mean photon purity.

We measure 90% visibility in Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independent heralded single photons from pulsed spontaneous parametric downconversion with a Gaussian spectral phase-matching profile, and study its dependence on the pump spectral properties.

Nonclassical interference between independent intrinsically pure single photons at telecommunication wavelength

Rui‐Bo Jin, Kentaro Wakui, Ryōsuke Shimizu +7 more

We demonstrate a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independent, intrinsically pure, heralded single photons from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) at telecommunication wavelength. A visibility of $85.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8.3%$ was achieved without using any bandpass filter. Thanks to the group-velocity-matched SPDC and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), the fourfold coincidence counts are one order higher than that in the previous experiments. The combination of bright single-photon sources and SNSPDs is a crucial step for future practical quantum infocommunication systems at telecommunication wavelength.

Nonclassical interferences with separate fibre sources of intrinsically time bandwidth limited photon pairs

M. Halder, Jérémie Fulconis, B. R. Cemlyn +4 more

Single photons are at the heart of optical quantum technologies such as quantum cryptography, quantum computing and quantum metrology. In this paper we report on the creation of photon pairs via four-wave-mixing (FWM) in birefringent photonic crystal fibres (PCF). It has recently been suggested that for thoroughly engineering the phase matching condition of a birefringent PCF, photon pairs can by created in an intrinsically pure state and narrow band. This can be achieved for cross-polarized phase matching, where two pump photons in the slow axis are converted into a pair of photons, polarized in the orthogonal fast axis. The aim is to produce such intrinsically pure and narrow-band photons and hence to achieve high non-classical interference visibility without any requirement for spectral filtering. In order to experimentally test the purity of our heralded single photons we performed a Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment using heralded signal photons generated in separate PCF sources.

High-visibility nonclassical interference between intrinsically pure heralded single photons and photons from a weak coherent field

Rui‐Bo Jin, Jun Zhang, Ryōsuke Shimizu +4 more

We present an experiment of nonclassical interference between an intrinsically pure heralded single-photon state and a weak coherent state. Our experiment demonstrates that, without the use of bandpass filters, spectrally pure single photons can have high-visibility ($89.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5%$) interference with photons from a weak coherent field. Our scheme lays the groundwork for future experiments requiring quantum interference between photons in nonclassical states and those in coherent states.

, with a Gaussian phase-matching function and a transform-limited Gaussian pump, to achieve near-unity spectral purity in heralded single photons at telecommunication wavelength. Theory shows that these phase-matching and pump conditions are sufficient to ensure that a biphoton state with a circularly symmetric joint spectral intensity profile is transform limited and factorable. We verify the heralded-state spectral purity in a four-fold coincidence measurement by performing Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independently generated heralded photons. With a mild spectral filter we obtain an interference visibility of 98.4±1.1% which corresponds to a heralded-state purity of 99.2%. Our heralded photon source is potentially an essential resource for measurement-based quantum information processing and quantum network applications.
