Phase Transitions of Random Binary Magnetic Square Lattice Ising Systems

Abstract

Binary magnetic square lattice Ising system with nearest neighbour interactions were simulated using the Monte Carlo technique. Two types of ions were randomly distributed on the lattice sites, one type interacting ferromagnetic and the other antiferromagnetic. A phase diagram of the ion concentration dependent critical temperature, Tc was deduced. Combined Bethe Peierls approximation and Mean Field theory phase transition results were compared to the results of the present method. An improved accuracy of the approximations of the critical temperatures was observed. The Monte Carlo simulation is thus shown to be a more reliable method for obtaining the physical properties of the random binary two-dimensional Ising system. Monte Carlo simulations in a disordered binary Ising model

Dorilson Silva Cambui, A.S. de Arruda, Maurício Godoy

In this work we study a disordered binary Ising model on the square lattice. The model system consists of two different particles with spin-1/2 and spin-1, which are randomly distributed on the lattice. It has been considered only spin nearest-neighbor exchange interactions with $J>0$. This system can represent a disordered magnetic binary alloy $A_{x}B_{1-x}$, obtained from the high temperature quenching of a liquid mixture. The results were obtained by the use of Monte Carlo simulations for several lattice sizes $L$, temperature $T$ and concentration $x$ of ions $A$ with spin-1/2. We found its critical temperature, through the reduced fourth-order Binder cumulant for the several values of the concentration $x$ of particles (spin-1/2, spin-1), and also the magnetization, the susceptibility and the specific heat as a function of temperature $T$.

Magnetic Properties of a Square Lattice Ising Ferromagnetic System for Different Spins with Monte Carlo Simulation

A. Azdouh, Said Harir, Anouar Elidrysy +3 more

Using the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method combined with the Metropolis algorithm, we explore the magnetic properties of a two-dimensional (2D) spin system with spins 1, 2 and 3. The adapted simulation to the Ising model aims to study the impact of the correction term a of the interaction with second neighbors and the crystal field D on the critical temperature [Formula: see text] of the 2D anisotropic square lattice for different integer values of spins. The obtained results demonstrate that the critical temperature [Formula: see text] is significantly affected by the competing interactions between the anisotropy parameter, second-neighbor interaction and the crystal field. The considered model exhibits a critical phase transition regardless of the spin S value where the critical temperature increases with the value of S. Note that this phase transition occurs under the condition [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the obtained results show that the complex interactions give rise to a variety of phase diagrams, thereby revealing the richness of possible magnetic behaviors in the studied system.

Magnetic Phase Transitions in Systems with Competing Interactions

David Paul Landau

Phase transitions in magnetic systems are studied using a Monte Carlo computer simulation method. The fundamentals of the technique are described and the strengths and limitations of this approach are discussed. Comparisons are made between the Monte Carlo data and exact results for the Ising square lattice. The properties of several different types of anisotropic systems are determined with particular care taken near the critical temperature Tc Competing interactions between neighboring sites has the effect of shifting Tc and may, in some cases, even change the nature of the ordered magnetic state. Critical field boundaries are traced out for several antiferromagnets and we show how competing interactions may give rise to tricritical points. We also present data on systems with impurities and examine the effects of free surfaces on the phase transition. Lastly we show how the transformation from the 2-dim Ising model to its lattice-gas model equivalent allows us to study adsorbed gas monolayers.

Monte Carlo Studies of the Square Lattice Ising System with the Two-Dimensional Dipolar Interaction

Seizo Watarai, Keizô Yamamoto, Akira Nakanishi

Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the square lattice Ising system with both the nearest neighbor and the two-dimensional dipolar interactions in order to investigate the critical property of ferromagnetic phase transitions in this 2-dimensional system. Applying the finite size scaling theory to Monte Carlo data just near the transition point, the critical indices of this dipolar system are calculated and α=0.31±0.04, β =0.20±0.02, γ=1.08±0.20 and ν=0.72±0.10 are obtained. However, in the temperature region considerably far from the transition point, different values of α, β and γ seem to be adequate, which are rather close to those of the rigorous result of the 2-dimensional Ising model.

Phase Diagram of Three-Dimensional Site-Random Ising Model

Koji Hukushima, Yoshihiko Nonomura, Yukiyasu Ozeki +1 more

The three-dimensional site-random Ising model consisting of two types of magnetic ions, A and B, is investigated by means of the exchange Monte Carlo method. The nearest-neighbor interactions are antiferromagnetic (AF) for the B-B pair and ferromagnetic (FM) otherwise. A uniform FM or AF ordering is found to exist in a wide range of concentration c of A ions, in contrast with the bond-random Ising model such as the ± J model. The phase diagram is found to be symmetric on the c – T plane, though the ratio of the FM bonds to AF ones is asymmetric with respect to c =1/2. Spin configurations of degenerate ground states and their cluster structure are also studied. Even in the system with c =0.55, there exists only a unique rigid cluster which includes about 90% of spins and that cluster shows nonvanishing uniform magnetization. These results strongly suggest that the present model has neither a spin glass phase nor an FM-AF mixed phase, though their existence in a quite narrow region around c =1/2 has not been completely excluded yet.

Monte-Carlo simulation of phase transition in 2D and 3D ising model

Rajendra Neupane, Hari Ram Krishna Gauli, Krishna Bahadur Rai +1 more

In this work, Markov Chain-Monte Carlo technique was used to study the phase transition in two and three dimensional Ising Model (IM) in a square and cubic lattice. The study of temperature dependence of average magnetization and specific heat in different magnetic fields has been carried out in the 3x3 and 3x3x3 lattice with periodic boundary. Critical temperature point kBTc / J for 2D and 3D Ising Model has been observed at around 2.2 and 4.3 respectively at zero field. Our work satisfies Onsager’s critical value in 2D IM. The simulation suggests bifurcation in average magnetization below critical temperature Tc. Temperature plays the role of increasing randomness of spins. We found that Ising Model in small lattice size still retains interesting features like spontaneous magnetization and symmetry breaking below Tc at B = 0. At a non-zero field, the likelihood of spins to prefer certain alignment depends on the direction of the external field and magnitude of magnetization depends on magnitude of field ±B. Specific heat Cv, which gives us fluctuation of energy at particular temperature, has been found to attain maximum value at critical regions.
