Ground States of the Spin-1 Bose-Hubbard Model

Abstract

We prove basic theorems about the ground states of the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model. The results are quite universal and depend only on the coefficient U2 of the spin-dependent interaction. We show that the ground state exhibits saturated ferromagnetism if U2<0, is spin-singlet if U2>0, and exhibits "SU(3)-ferromagnetism" if U2=0, and completely determine the degeneracy in each region.

Rigorous Results for the Ground States of the Spin-2 Bose-Hubbard Model

Hong Wei Yang, Hosho Katsura

We present rigorous and universal results for the ground states of the f=2 spinor Bose-Hubbard model. The model includes three two-body on-site interaction terms, two of which are spin dependent while the other one is spin independent. We prove that, depending only on the coefficients of the two spin-dependent terms, the ground state exhibits maximum or minimum total spin or SU(5) ferromagnetism. Exact ground-state degeneracies and the forms of ground-state wave function are also determined in each case. All these results are valid regardless of dimension, lattice structure, or particle number. Our approach takes advantage of the symmetry of the Hamiltonian and employs mathematical tools including the Perron-Frobenius theorem and the Lie algebra so(5).

Ground-state spin structure of strongly interacting disordered 1D Hubbard model

Eli Eisenberg, Richard Berkovits

Abstract. We study the influence of on-site disorder on the magnetic properties of the ground state of the infinite-U one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model. We find that the ground state is not ferromagnetic. This is analysed in terms of the algebraic structure of the spin dependence of the Hamiltonian. A simple explanation is derived for the 1=N periodicity in the persistent current for this model. The Hubbard model is the simplest model one can study to examine the effects of correlations between electrons in narrow energy bands. The Hamiltonian consists of a nearest neighbour hopping term and an electron–electron repulsion, U, which acts only when two electrons are on the same site. The Hubbard model is also the canonical model for the study of itinerant ferromagnetism. The strong coupling regime is of special importance for the study of ferromagnetism, since a theorem by Nagaoka [1] states that in theU D 1 limit, the ground state (GS) is ferromagnetic given some connectivity property of the lattice (which holds in most cases for d> 1). The model is solvable in one dimension and it was shown [2] that for open boundary conditions (BCs) the GS for finiteU is a singlet, i.e. there can be no ferromagnetism unless one postulates explicitly spin- or velocity-dependent forces. For infinite U, the GS of

Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard Model-- Examples from Models with Degenerate Single-Electron Ground States

Andreas Mielke, Hal Tasaki

Whether spin-independent Coulomb interaction can be the origin of a realistic ferromagnetism in an itinerant electron system has been an open problem for a long time. Here we study a class of Hubbard models on decorated lattices, which have a special property that the corresponding single-electron Schrödinger equation has $N_{\rm d}$-fold degenerate ground states. The degeneracy $N_{\rm d}$ is proportional to the total number of sites $\absΛ$. We prove that the ground states of the models exhibit ferromagnetism when the electron filling factor is not more than and sufficiently close to $ρ_0=N_{\rm d}/(2\absΛ)$, and paramagnetism when the filling factor is sufficiently small. An important feature of the present work is that it provides examples of three dimensional itinerant electron systems which are proved to exhibit ferromagnetism in a finite range of the electron filling factor.

Ground State of the Kondo-Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Takashi Yanagisawa, Yukihiro Shimoi

We investigate the ground state of the Kondo-Hubbard model employing the recently introduced idea of spin-reflection positivity. It is shown exactly that the Kondo-Hubbard model for $J<0$ and $U>|J|/4$ at half filling has a unique ground state which can be ferromagnetic or singlet according to the lattice structure. In particular, for the Kondo lattice with $U>|J|/4$, the ground state is a singlet. We also show a theorem for the Kondo-Hubbard model with the anisotropic antiferromagnetic coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}>0$ and ${J}_{z}\ensuremath{\le}0$ for $U>|{J}_{z}|/4$.

Lieb's Theorem for Bose Hubbard Models

Zhongchao Wei, Chong Ke Zhao

Using a cone-theoretical method, we prove the uniqueness of the ground state for two Bose Hubbard models. The first model is the usual Bose Hubbard model with real hopping coefficients and attractive interactions. The second model is a two-component Bose Hubbard model. Under certain conditions, we show that the ground state in the subspace with particle number $N=2n$($n$ is a positive integer) is unique for both models. For the second model, we show that the ground state has spin along the z-axis $S^{z}=0$. When the hopping coefficients are real, it has zero spin quantum number, i.e., it is a singlet. Our proofs work equally well for any arbitrary finite-size lattice.

New Saturated Ferromagnetism in the Flat-Band Hubbard Model in High Electron Filling

Yuuki Watanabe, Seiji Miyashita

We investigate the magnetization of the ground state of the one-dimensional flat-band Hubbard model as a function of the electron filling, using exact diagonalization techniques. Our calculation shows that the systems with odd n holes added to half-filling bands for a sufficiently large U (the on-site Coulomb repulsion energy) have a saturated ferromagnetic ground state, which is nondegenerate except for the trivial spin degeneracy. Dependences of the critical value of U on the size and on λ (a parameter of the system) are also investigated. For all values of λ, it is found that the ground state is a saturated ferromagnetic state if U is sufficiently large. Moreover, we find that the critical U for the saturated ferromagnetic ground state is almost independent on the system size, at least, for the system near quarter-filling. These facts indicate that even if the system size go to infinity, the ferromagnetic ground state can be exist for a finite U .
