Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard Model-- Examples from Models with Degenerate Single-Electron Ground States

Abstract

Whether spin-independent Coulomb interaction can be the origin of a realistic ferromagnetism in an itinerant electron system has been an open problem for a long time. Here we study a class of Hubbard models on decorated lattices, which have a special property that the corresponding single-electron Schrödinger equation has $N_{\rm d}$-fold degenerate ground states. The degeneracy $N_{\rm d}$ is proportional to the total number of sites $\absΛ$. We prove that the ground states of the models exhibit ferromagnetism when the electron filling factor is not more than and sufficiently close to $ρ_0=N_{\rm d}/(2\absΛ)$, and paramagnetism when the filling factor is sufficiently small. An important feature of the present work is that it provides examples of three dimensional itinerant electron systems which are proved to exhibit ferromagnetism in a finite range of the electron filling factor.

Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard models with degenerate single-electron ground states

Hal Tasaki

We study a class of Hubbard models in which the corresponding single-electron ground states have bulk degeneracy. We prove that the ground states of the models exhibit ferromagnetism when the electron filling factor is not more than and sufficiently close to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{0}$=\ensuremath{\Vert}V\ensuremath{\Vert}/2\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Vert} (where \ensuremath{\Vert}V\ensuremath{\Vert} is the dimension of degeneracy and \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Vert} is the number of sites), and exhibit paramagnetism when the filling factor is sufficiently small. This is the first time that a three-dimensional itinerant-electron system is proved to exhibit ferromagnetism in a finite range of the electron filling factor.

Nonperturbative Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard Model for Quarter-Filling with One Extra Electron

Akinori Tanaka, Toshihiro Idogaki

We present a Hubbard model with a special hopping matrix, which has highly degenerate single-electron energy eigenstates but has different properties than the flat-band Hubbard model. Our model has a paramagnetic ground state when the electron filling factor is less than or equal to quarter-filling. In the case of quarter-filling with one extra electron, the present model exhibits saturated ferromagnetism in the ground states for a sufficiently large value of on-site Coulomb interaction but does not for a small one.

Ferromagnetism in an itinerant electron system: Hubbard model on complete graph

D. F. Wang

In this work, the ground states of the Hubbard model on complete graph are studied, for a finite lattice size $L$ and arbitrary on-site energy $U$. We construct explicitly the ground states of the system when the number of the electrons $N_e \ge L+1$. In particular, for $N_e=L+1$, the ground state is ferromagnetic with total spin $s_g=(N_e-2)/2$.

Metallic ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model on three coupled chains

Akinori Tanaka, Toshihiro Idogaki

We study the Hubbard model on three coupled chains which has the saturated ferromagnetic ground states in a finite range of the electron filling factor . In the case that both the single-electron band gap between the highest and lower two bands and the on-site Coulomb interaction are infinitely large, we will rigorously show that the present model exhibits ferromagnetism for 0 < <(1/3), where 0 0 (1/6) depending on the band structure. We will also give numerical results, which indicate that, even in the case that the band gap and the Coulomb interaction are not so large, the present ferromagnetism will survive for suitable electron filling factors.

A Model of Itinerant Ferromagnetism in Two- and Three- Dimensional Multi-orbital Systems

Yi Li, Élliott H. Lieb, Congjun Wu

We study itinerant ferromagnetism in multi-orbital Hubbard models in certain two-dimensional square and three-dimensional cubic lattices. In the strong coupling limit where doubly occupied orbitals are not allowed we prove that the fully spin-polarized states are the unique ground states, apart from the trivial spin degeneracies, for any generic filling factor 0 < n < 2 (0 < n < 3) in two (three) dimensions. Possible applications to p-orbital bands with ultra-cold fermions in optical lattices are discussed.

Ferromagnetism in d-Dimensional SU(n) Hubbard Models with Nearly Flat Bands

Kensuke Tamura, Hosho Katsura

Abstract We present rigorous results for the SU(n) Fermi–Hubbard models with finite-range hopping in d ( $$\ge 2$$ ≥ 2 ) dimensions. The models are defined on a class of decorated lattices. We first study the models with flat bands at the bottom of the single-particle spectrum and prove that the ground states exhibit SU(n) ferromagnetism when the number of particles is equal to the number of unit cells. We then perturb the models by adding particular hopping terms and make the bottom bands dispersive. Under the same filling condition, it is proved that the ground states remain SU(n) ferromagnetic when the bottom bands are sufficiently flat and the Coulomb repulsion is sufficiently large.
