A Laplace transform approach to the quantum harmonic oscillator

Abstract

The one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator problem is examined via the Laplace transform method. The stationary states are determined by requiring definite parity and good behaviour of the eigenfunction at the origin and at infinity.

Revisiting the quantum harmonic oscillator via unilateral Fourier transforms

Pedro H F Nogueira, Antonio S de Castro

Abstract The literature on the exponential Fourier approach to the one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator problem is revised and criticized. It is shown that the solution of this problem has been built on faulty premises. The problem is revisited via the Fourier sine and cosine transform method and the stationary states are properly determined by requiring definite parity and square-integrable eigenfunctions.

Bound state solutions of the one-dimensional Schrdinger equation for the harmonic oscillator via the Laplace transform

Zidong Chen

AbstrcatThe second-order one-dimensional Schrdinger differential equation for the harmonic oscillator is reduced to a first-order differential equation by means of the Laplace transform, and then, its solutions are obtained by means of directly making use of an integral. The energy spectrum is derived from the condition that the wave functions must be single-valued.The required eigenfunctions are obtained by applying the expansions of series and inverse Laplace transform.

More on the quantum harmonic oscillator via unilateral Fourier transform

Douglas Willian Vieira, Antonio S. de Castro

The stationary states of the quantum harmonic oscillator are properly determined by means of the unilateral Fourier transform without having to recourse to the properties of the confluent hypergeometric functions. This simpler procedure is reminiscent of the algebraic method based on the ladder operators and depends on the value of just one tabulated definite integral related to the ground state.

Quantum harmonic oscillator revisited: A Fourier transform approach

Sergey A. Ponomarenko

I present a Fourier transform approach to the problem of finding the stationary states of a quantum harmonic oscillator. The simplicity of the method may make it a desirable substitute for the rather cumbersome polynomial approach to the problem which is commonly used in the standard graduate quantum mechanics textbooks.

Revisiting the Laplace transform in quantum mechanics: correcting a flawed approach for the stationary Schrödinger equation

Luis M Báez, Andrés Santos

Abstract The Laplace transform is a valuable tool in physics, particularly in solving differential equations with initial or boundary conditions. A 2014 study by Tsaur and Wang (2014 Eur. J. Phys. 35 015006) introduced a Laplace-transform-based method to solve the stationary Schrödinger equation for various potentials. However, their approach contains critical methodological flaws: the authors disregard essential boundary conditions and apply the residue theorem incorrectly in the inverse transformation process. These errors ultimately cancel out, leading to correct results despite a flawed derivation. In this paper, we revisit the use of the Laplace transform for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation, clarifying correct practices in handling boundary conditions and singularities. This analysis offers a sound and consistent framework for the application of Laplace transforms in stationary quantum mechanics, underscoring their educational utility in quantum mechanics coursework.

Exact solutions of N -dimensional harmonic oscillator via Laplace transformation

Chen Gang

The N -dimensional Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator is reduced to a first-order differential equation in terms of the Laplace transformation and the exact bound state solutions are derived. It is shown that this method of solving Schrödinger equation may serve as a substitute for the standard functional, analytical approach also in lower dimensions.
