Abstract

We formulate a quantum theory of electron waiting time distributions for charge transport in nanostructures described by non-Markovian generalized master equations. We illustrate our method by calculating the waiting time distribution of electron transport through a dissipative double quantum dot, where memory effects are present due to a strongly coupled heat bath. We consider the influence of non-Markovian dephasing on the distribution of electron waiting times and discuss how spectral properties of the heat bath may be detected through measurements of the electron waiting time.

Waiting-time distribution as a sensitive probe of non-Markovian dephasing dynamics in a double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer

RuiQiang Li, Yi Ding, Yiying Yan +6 more

We investigate electron transport through a double dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer coupled to a heat bath, which provides not only a dephasing source but also non-Markovian memory effects. The distribution of waiting times between subsequent electron transfers is utilized to analyze the unique non-Markovian dephasing dynamics, especially at short times. We show how the coherent oscillations in the weak system-bath coupling regime are washed out in the strong coupling limit, due to the dephasing during the propagation of the electrons through the double dot interferometer. Intriguingly, we find for an intermediate coupling strength that the non-Markovian properties of the system-bath coupling unambiguously give rise to a revival of the coherent oscillations in the waiting time distribution. By analyzing the corresponding moments, we furthermore demonstrate the unique advantages of the higher-order moments in revealing the non-Markovian characteristics.

The influence of charge detection on counting statistics

Alessandro Braggio, Christian Flindt, Tomáš Novotný

We consider the counting statistics of electron transport through a double quantum dot with special emphasis on the dephasing induced by a nearby charge detector. The double dot is embedded in a dissipative enviroment, and the presence of electrons on the double dot is detected with a nearby quantum point contact. Charge transport through the double dot is governed by a non-Markovian generalized master equation. We describe how the cumulants of the current can be obtained for such problems, and investigate the difference between the dephasing mechanisms induced by the quantum point contact and the coupling to the external heat bath. Finally, we consider various open questions of relevance to future research.

Non-Markovian decoherence theory for a double-dot charge qubit

Matisse Wei-Yuan Tu, Wei-Min Zhang

In this paper, we develop a nonperturbation theory for describing decoherence dynamics of electron charges in a double quantum dot gated by electrodes. We extend the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory to fermionic environments and derive an exact master equation for the reduced density matrix of electrons in the double dot for a general spectral density at arbitrary temperature and bias. We then investigate the decoherence dynamics of the double-dot charge qubit with backreaction of the reservoirs being fully taken into account. Time-dependent fluctuations and leakage effects induced from the dot-reservoir coupling are explicitly explored. The charge qubit dynamics from the Markovian to non-Markovian regime is systematically studied under various manipulating conditions. The decay behavior of charge qubit coherence and the corresponding relaxation time ${T}_{1}$ and dephasing time ${T}_{2}$ are analyzed in detail.

Non-equilibrium quantum theory for nanodevices based on the Feynman–Vernon influence functional

Jinshuang Jin, Matisse Wei-Yuan Tu, Wei-Min Zhang +1 more

In this paper, we present a non-equilibrium quantum theory for transient electron dynamics in nanodevices based on the Feynman–Vernon influence functional. Applying the exact master equation for nanodevices we recently developed to the more general case in which all the constituents of a device vary in time in response to time-dependent external voltages, we obtained non-perturbatively the transient quantum transport theory in terms of the reduced density matrix. The theory enables us to study transient quantum transport in nanostructures with back-reaction effects from the contacts, with non-Markovian dissipation and decoherence being fully taken into account. For a simple illustration, we apply the theory to a single-electron transistor subjected to ac bias voltages. The non-Markovian memory structure and the nonlinear response functions describing transient electron transport are obtained.

Master equation approach to transient quantum transport in nanostructures

Pei-Yun Yang, Wei-Min Zhang

In this review article, we present a non-equilibrium quantum transport theory for transient electron dynamics in nanodevices based on exact Master equation derived with the path integral method in the fermion coherent-state representation. Applying the exact Master equation to nanodevices, we also establish the connection of the reduced density matrix and the transient quantum transport current with the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The theory enables us to study transient quantum transport in nanostructures with back-reaction effects from the contacts, with non-Markovian dissipation and decoherence being fully taken into account. In applications, we utilize the theory to specific quantum transport systems, a variety of quantum decoherence and quantum transport phenomena involving the non-Markovian memory effect are investigated in both transient and stationary scenarios at arbitrary initial temperatures of the contacts.

Exact Master Equation and Non-Markovian Decoherence for Quantum Dot Quantum Computing

Ming‐Tsung Lee, Wei-Min Zhang

In this article, we report the recent progress on decoherence dynamics of electrons in quantum dot quantum computing systems using the exact master equation we derived recently based on the Feynman–Vernon influence functional approach. The exact master equation is valid for general nanostructure systems coupled to multi-reservoirs with arbitrary spectral densities, temperatures and biases. We take the double quantum dot charge qubit system as a specific example, and discuss in details the decoherence dynamics of the charge qubit under coherence controls. The decoherence dynamics risen from the entanglement between the system and the environment is mainly non-Markovian. We further discuss the decoherence of the double-dot charge qubit induced by quantum point contact (QPC) measurement where the master equation is re-derived using the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function technique due to the non-linear coupling between the charge qubit and the QPC. The non-Markovian decoherence dynamics in the measurement processes is extensively discussed as well.
