Abstract

The relation between two approaches to the su(2)-algebraic many-fermion model is discussed: (1) the BCS-Bogoliubov approach in terms of the use of the quasiparticles representing all the degrees of freedom except those related to the Cooper-pairs and (2) the conventional algebraic approach in terms of the use of the minimum weight states, from which the Cooper-pairs are excluded. In order to arrive at the goal, the idea of the quasiparticles is brought up in the conservation of the fermion number. Under the c-number replacement for the three su(2)-generators, the quasiparticles suggested in this paper are reduced to those in the BCS-Bogoliubov approach. It is also shown that the two approaches are equivalent through the c-number replacement. Further, a certain modification of the BCS-Bogoliubov approach is discussed.

A Role of the Quasiparticle in the Conservation of the Fermion Number: -- An Example Illustrative of the Deformation of the Cooper Pair --

Y. Tsue, Constança Providência, João da Providência +1 more

The role of the “quasiparticle" introduced in the previous paper by the present authors is discussed. It serves as a guide for the deformation of the Cooper-pair in the BCS-Bogoliubov approach. As an illustrative example, a certain case is treated. This case produces the su(1,1)-like behavior in the su(2)-algebraic many-fermion system.

Bogoliubov coupled-cluster theory for su(2) Hamiltonians

Swarnamoy Ghosh, Thomas M. Henderson, Gustavo E. Scuseria

Coupled-cluster theory is the method of choice for weakly correlated systems, but in strongly correlated systems where the mean-field reference is qualitatively poor, it can break down badly. These failures can be ameliorated by using symmetry-broken mean-field references. For systems that spontaneously break spin symmetry, we might favor an unrestricted reference. In systems that instead break number symmetry, we turn to Bogoliubov coupled cluster theory. In this work, we apply Bogoliubov coupled-cluster to Hamiltonians with an underlying su(2) algebra to study the pairing Hamiltonian and the spin XXZ and J1-J2 models by exploiting the correspondence between fermionic-pair operators and spin-1/2 operators. For the pairing problem, the reference is the usual Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) quasiparticle vacuum, while for spin systems we use the analogous spin-BCS reference, which breaks Sz symmetry and provides a flexible starting point for strongly correlated regimes. Correlation is incorporated through a hierarchy of coupled-cluster approximations. Beyond energies, we compute the response density matrices for the evaluation of spin--spin correlation functions for the XXZ and J1-J2 Heisenberg models, and the pairing parameter and particle-number variance for the pairing Hamiltonian. We also derive the corresponding relaxed density matrices, including the effects of orbital relaxation. Benchmark calculations for the half-filled pairing Hamiltonian and spin models demonstrate that Bogoliubov coupled cluster provides a systematically improvable wave-function-based approach for su(2) Hamiltonians, including geometrically frustrated spin systems requiring complex and noncollinear BCS references.

Background of the su(2)-Algebraic Many-Fermion Models in the Boson Realization

Y. Tsue, Constança Providência, João da Providência +1 more

The su(2)-algebraic many-fermion model is formulated so as to be able to get the unified understanding of the structures of three simple models: the single-level pairing, the isoscalar proton-neutron pairing and the two-level Lipkin model. The basic idea is to introduce an auxiliary su(2)-algebra, any generator of which commutes with any generator of the starting su(2)-algebra. With the aid of this algebra, the minimum weight states are completely determined in simple form. Further, concerning the two algebras, boson realization is presented. Through this formulation, the behavior of the total fermion in the Lipkin model is notably different from that in the other two models. As the supplementary problem, the boson-fermion realization and the Lipkin model in the isovector pairing model are investigated.

A New Boson Realization of the Two-Level Pairing Model in a Many-Fermion System and Its Classical Counterpart: -- The Role of the su(2) su(1,1)-Coherent State in the Schwinger Boson Representation for the su(2) su(2)-Algebra --

Constança Providência, João da Providência, Y. Tsue +1 more

A new method for describing the two-level pairing model in a many-fermion system is presented. The basic idea comes from the Schwinger boson representation for the su(2) ⊗ su(2)-algebra, in which four kinds of boson operators govern the dynamics. It is well known that in the original fermion space, it is almost impossible to introduce any trial state for the variation except the BCS state in the framework of the mean field approximation. However, in the Schwinger boson representation, various trial states can be defined on the condition that the mean field approximation is useful. In these states, the su(2) ⊗ su(1,1)-coherent state is mainly discussed in this paper.

BCS Ground State and XXZ Antiferromagnetic Model as SU(2), SU(1,1) Coherent States: An Algebraic Diagonalization Method

Xie, Bing-Hao, Zhang +3 more

An algebraic diagonalization method is proposed. As two examples, the Hamiltonians of BCS ground stateunder mean-field approximation and XXZ antiferromagnetic model in linear spin-wave frame have been diagonalized byusing SU(2), SU(1,1) Lie algebraic method, respectively. Meanwhile, the eigenstates of the above two models are revealedto be SU(2), SU(1,1) coherent states, respectively. The relation between the usual Bogoliubov Valatin transformationand the algebraic method in a special case is also discussed.

New Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type theory at finite temperature with particle-number conservation

Hitoshi Nakada, K. Tanabe

We formulate a new Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type theory at finite temperature, by deriving a set of variational equations of the free energy after the particle-number projection. With its broad applicability, this theory can be a useful tool for investigating the pairing phase transition in finite systems with the particle-number conservation. This theory provides effects of the symmetry-restoring fluctuation (SRF) for the pairing phenomena in finite fermionic systems, distinctively from those of additional quantum fluctuations. It is shown by numerical calculations that the phase transition is compatible with the conservation in this theory, and that the SRF shifts up the critical temperature (${T}^{\mathrm{cr}}$). This shift of ${T}^{\mathrm{cr}}$ occurs due to reduction of degrees-of-freedom in canonical ensembles, and decreases only slowly as the particle-number increases (or as the level spacing narrows), in contrast to the conventional BCS theory.
