The role of damping for the driven anharmonic quantum oscillator

Abstract

For the model of a linearly driven quantum anharmonic oscillator, the role of damping is investigated. We compare the position of the stable points in phase space obtained from a classical analysis to the result of a quantum mechanical analysis. The solution of the full master equation shows that the stable points behave qualitatively similar to the classical solution but with small modifications. Both the quantum effects and additional effects of temperature can be described by renormalizing the damping.

Semiclassical analysis of the metastable driven and damped quantized anharmonic oscillator

Bjarne Vestergaard, Juha Javanainen

Recent numerical work has demonstrated how one of the bistable states of a driven, damped, anharmonic classical oscillator is metastable in the corresponding quantum oscillator [D. Enzer and G. Gabrielse, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 1211 (1997)]. Based on an analysis of the classical oscillator, we present a simple analytical treatment of the quantum oscillator. Calculated fluctuations in the quantum observables and the estimated decay rate of the metastable state are in an excellent agreement with the numerical results of Enzer and Gabrielse.

Quantum-state diffusion model and the driven damped nonlinear oscillator

M. Rigo, G. Alber, Francisca Mota-Furtado +1 more

We consider a driven damped anharmonic oscillator that classically leads to a bistable steady state and to hysteresis. The quantum counterpart for this system has an exact analytical solution in the steady state that does not display any bistability or hysteresis. We use quantum-state diffusion theory to describe this system and to provide a new perspective on the lack of hysteresis in the quantum regime so as to study in detail the quantum to classical transition. The analysis is also relevant to measurements of a single periodically driven electron in a Penning trap where hysteresis has been observed.

Study of Certain Aspects of Anharmonic, Time-Dependent and Damped Harmonic Oscillator Systems

Subir Kumar Bose, U. B. Dubey, N. Varma

The present review is devoted to the study of certain aspects of anharmonic, time-dependent and damped oscillator(s) system using different theoretical techniques. A theoretical understanding of these systems is important for application in many problems in physics, mechanics and other fields. We discuss in detail the difficulties in the theoretical analysis of the problem. In particular we discuss here the regular, well-behaved perturbative solution, the large quantum number behaviour of anharmonic oscillator(s) using the technique of coherent states, exact solution of quantum anharmonic oscillators, the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a charged particle executing damped anharmonic oscillator motion using Krylov-Bogoliubov approximation method, use of invariants to obtain solution and coherent states of time-dependent oscillator(s), the derivation of perturbative frequencies of a damped coupled anharmonic oscillators system using suitable canonical transformation in the framework of Hamilton-Jacobi formalism and the quantisation and construction of coherent states of a damped oscillator using time-dependent operators.

Wigner function for a driven anharmonic oscillator

Karen V. Kheruntsyan

We consider the quantum model of a driven anharmonic oscillator, in the presence of dissipation, and present an exact analytic solution for the corresponding Wigner function in the steady-state regime. This provides explicit phase-space images of the resulting state of the cavity mode, and allows us to understand how the quantum interference is built up into it. The photon number probability distribution is calculated and analysed as well. We monitor the transition from the semiclassical to extreme quantum regime of operation, and identify qualitative changes, where the conventional characteristics of the model, such as bistability or turning points, become meaningless.

Quantum dissipative dynamics of driven Duffing oscillator near attractors

Wei Feng, Lingzhen Guo

We investigate the quantum dissipative dynamics near the stable states (attractors) of a driven Duffing oscillator. A refined perturbation theory that can treat two perturbative parameters with different orders is developed to calculate the quantum properties of the Duffing oscillator near the attractors. We obtain the perturbative analytical results that go beyond the standard linearization approach for the renormalized level spacings, the orbital displacements, and the effective temperature near the classical attractor. Furthermore, we demonstrate that strong damping induces additional slight renormalization of level spacings and the Bose distribution together with dephasing. Our work provides new insights into the quantum dynamics of the driven Duffing oscillator and offers a theoretical framework that can be applied to related quantum systems near their stable states.

Dissipative Quantum and Classical Liouville Mechanics of the Anharmonic Oscillator

Gerard J Milburn, Catherine A. Holmes

We present a solution for the dynamics of an anharmonic oscillator coupled to a zero-temperature heat bath. Comparison of observable properties in a classical and quantum description uses true joint phase-space probability densities. The time evolution of the density in the quantum case is rapidly "reduced" to that given in the classical description. The rate of reduction is proportional to the product of the damping rate and the oscillator's initial energy. Quite rapidly, typical quantum recurrence effects are destroyed and the classical "whorl" structure restored. We point out the close similarity with rapid destruction of quantum coherence through dissipation.
