Wigner function for a driven anharmonic oscillator

Abstract

We consider the quantum model of a driven anharmonic oscillator, in the presence of dissipation, and present an exact analytic solution for the corresponding Wigner function in the steady-state regime. This provides explicit phase-space images of the resulting state of the cavity mode, and allows us to understand how the quantum interference is built up into it. The photon number probability distribution is calculated and analysed as well. We monitor the transition from the semiclassical to extreme quantum regime of operation, and identify qualitative changes, where the conventional characteristics of the model, such as bistability or turning points, become meaningless.

Exact steady-state Wigner function for a nondegenerate parametric oscillator

Karen V. Kheruntsyan, K. G. Petrosyan

We consider the model of a nondegenerate parametric oscillator, in the adiabatic limit of strongly damped pump mode, and find an exact analytic solution for the joint two-mode Wigner function in the steady-state regime. The one-mode Wigner functions for the individual signal and idler modes are derived as well. This gives an explicit and complete phase-space representation of this two-mode nonequilibrium quantum system. Simple examples are given illustrating the phase-space images of optical bistability and the phase diffusion effect.

Quantum-state diffusion model and the driven damped nonlinear oscillator

M. Rigo, G. Alber, Francisca Mota-Furtado +1 more

We consider a driven damped anharmonic oscillator that classically leads to a bistable steady state and to hysteresis. The quantum counterpart for this system has an exact analytical solution in the steady state that does not display any bistability or hysteresis. We use quantum-state diffusion theory to describe this system and to provide a new perspective on the lack of hysteresis in the quantum regime so as to study in detail the quantum to classical transition. The analysis is also relevant to measurements of a single periodically driven electron in a Penning trap where hysteresis has been observed.

Quantum phase transitions in the driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings oscillator: From the dispersive regime to resonance

Th. K. Mavrogordatos

We follow the passage from complex amplitude bistability to phase bistability in the driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings oscillator. Quasi -distribution functions in the steady state are employed, for varying qubit-cavity detuning and drive parameters, in order to track a first-order dissipative quantum phase transition up to the critical point marking a second-order transition and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We demonstrate the photon blockade breakdown in the dispersive regime, and find that the coexistence of cavity states in the regime of quantum bistability is accompanied by pronounced qubit-cavity entanglement. Focusing on the effect of quantum-activated switching for both coupled degrees of freedom, we move from a region of minimal entanglement in the dispersive regime, where we derive analytical perturbative results, to the threshold behaviour of spontaneous dressed-state polarization at resonance.

Full length article Wigner function for a generalized model of a parametric oscillator: phase-space tristability, competition and nonclassical effects

Karen V. Kheruntsyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan, K.G. Petrossian

We present an exact quantum treatment of the generalized model of a degenerate parametric oscillator, in which we allow for self-phase modulation of the signal mode. Using the steady-state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation in the complex P-representation we obtain an exact analytical result for the Wigner quasiprobability distribution function. The obtained Wigner function allows us to give an explicit phase-space description of the nonlinear system under consideration, including the critical transition behavior in the monostable and bistable (with respect to the signal mode intensity versus the pump field intensity) operation regimes and in the threshold region. The competitive effects influenced by the self-phase modulation and the phase-space tristability are analyzed. Nonclassical effects of quadrature squeezing and quantum superposition are discussed as well.

Testing nonclassicality with exact Wigner currents for an anharmonic quantum system

Alex E. Bernardini

Phase-space features of the Wigner flow for an anharmonic quantum system driven by the harmonic oscillator potential modified by the addition of an inverse square (one-dimensional Coulomb-like) contribution are analytically described in terms of Wigner functions and Wigner currents. Reporting about three correlated continuity equations which quantify the flux of quantum information in the phase space, the nonclassicality profile of such an anharmonic system can be consistently obtained in terms of the fluxes of probability, purity, and von Neumann--like entropy. Considering that quantum fluctuations can be identified from distortions over the classical regime, they can be quantified through the above-mentioned information fluxes whenever some classically bounded volume of the phase space is selected. Our results suggest that the Wigner flow approach works as a probe of quantumness and classicality for a large set of anharmonic quantum systems driven by quantum wells.

1 Dissipative Chaos in Quantum Distributions

T. V. Gevorgyan, Suren B. Manvelyan

We discuss some problems of dissipative chaos for open quantum systems in the framework of semiclassical and quantum distributions. For this goal, we propose a driven nonlinear oscillator with time-dependent coefficients, i.e. with time-dependent Kerr-nonlinearity and time-modulated driving field. This model showing both regular and chaotic dynamics in the classical limit is realized in several experimental schemes.Quantum dissipative chaos is analyzed on the base of numerical method of quantum trajectories.Three quantities are studied: the Wigner function of oscillatory mode from the point of view of quantum-assemble theory and both semiclassical Poincaré section and quantum Poincaré section calculated on a single quantum trajectory. The comparatively analysis of these distributions for various operational chaotic regimes of the models is performed, as well as scaling invariance in dissipative chaos and quantum interference effects assisted by chaos are discussed.
