Abstract

The dynamics of a state of interest coupled to a non-Markovian environment is studied by concatenating the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation and the Feshbach projection-operator partitioning technique. An exact one-dimensional stochastic master equation is derived as a general tool for controlling an arbitrary component of the system. We show that the exact one-dimensional stochastic master equation can be efficiently solved beyond the widely adapted second-order master equations. The generality and applicability of this hybrid approach is justified and exemplified by several coherence control problems concerning quantum state protection against leakage and decoherence.

Stochastic Feshbach Projection for the Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems

Valentin Link, Walter T. Strunz

We present a stochastic projection formalism for the description of quantum dynamics in bosonic or spin environments. The Schrödinger equation in the coherent state representation with respect to the environmental degrees of freedom can be reformulated by employing the Feshbach partitioning technique for open quantum systems based on the introduction of suitable non-Hermitian projection operators. In this picture the reduced state of the system can be obtained as a stochastic average over pure state trajectories, for any temperature of the bath. The corresponding non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations include a memory integral over the past states. In the case of harmonic environments and linear coupling the approach gives a new form of the established non-Markovian quantum state diffusion stochastic Schrödinger equation without functional derivatives. Utilizing spin coherent states, the evolution equation for spin environments resembles the bosonic case with, however, a non-Gaussian average for the reduced density operator.

Projection Operator Stochastic Equations for Non-Markovian Quantum Systems Under Continuous Measurement-Based Feedback

H. I. Nurdin

Quantum Markov models have been successfully used to accurately model various physical quantum systems in fields such as quantum optics, optomechanics and superconducting circuits and they provide the basis for (measurement-based) quantum feedback control. However, the quantum Markov assumption is a strong one and it is not expected to hold for general quantum systems of interest. The projection operator approach is one approach that has been developed to model non-Markovian quantum systems by considering its embedding in a larger Markovian quantum system, but mainly in the context of quantum master equations for the dynamics of the unmonitored reduced quantum state of a quantum system. This approach was recently adapted for continuously measured non-Markovian quantum systems, which enables open-loop control but did not yet consider the presence of feedback of the stochastic measurement record, deriving non-Markovian SDEs for the evolution of the projected state of the Markovian embedding. This paper generalizes these stochastic equations to the setting of stochastic feedback based on the continuous-measurement record and shows that the equations take the same form but that previously deterministic terms become stochastic ones which depend on the measurement record, as would be intuitively expected. The stochastic equations are obtained for a generalized class of measurements that includes continuous (possibly adaptive) homodyne and photon counting measurements.

Master Equation and Control of an Open Quantum System with Leakage

Lian-Ao Wu, Gershon Kurizki, Paul W. Brumer

Given a multilevel system coupled to a bath, we use a Feshbach P, Q partitioning technique to derive an exact trace-nonpreserving master equation for a subspace S_{i} of the system. The resultant equation properly treats the leakage effect from S_{i} into the remainder of the system space. Focusing on a second-order approximation, we show that a one-dimensional master equation is sufficient to study problems of quantum state storage and is a good approximation, or exact, for several analytical models. It allows a natural definition of a leakage function and its control and provides a general approach to study and control decoherence and leakage. Numerical calculations on an harmonic oscillator coupled to a room temperature harmonic bath show that the leakage can be suppressed by the pulse control technique without requiring ideal pulses.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Qubit Systems: Quantum-State Diffusion Equations Versus Master Equations

Yusui Chen, Ting Yu

In this review we discuss recent progress in the theory of open quantum systems based on non-MarkovianNon-Markovian quantum state diffusionQuantum state diffusion equation and master equationsMaster equation. In particular, we show that an exact master equation for an open quantum system consisting of a few qubits can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation. The exact master equation arises naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit systems collectively interacting with a colored noise. We illustrate our general theoretical formalism by the explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This exact qubit master equation accurately characterizes the time evolution of the qubit system in various parameter domains, and paves the way for investigation of the memory effect of an open quantum system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.

Markovian Embeddings of Non-Markovian Quantum Systems: Coupled Stochastic and Quantum Master Equations for Non-Markovian Quantum Systems

Hendra I. Nurdin

Quantum Markov models are employed ubiqui-tously in quantum physics and in quantum information theory due to their relative simplicity and analytical tractability. In particular, these models are known to give accurate approxi-mations for a wide range of quantum optical and meso scopic systems. However, in general, the validity of the Markov approximation entails assumptions regarding properties of the system of interest and its environment, which may not be satisfied or accurate in arbitrary physical systems. Therefore, developing useful modelling tools for general non-Markovian quantum systems for which the Markov approximation is inappropriate or deficient is an undertaking of significant importance. This work considers non-Markovian principal quantum systems that can be embedded in a larger Markovian quantum system with one or more compound baths consisting of an auxiliary quantum system and a quantum white noise field, and derives a set of coupled stochastic and quantum master equations for embedded non-Markovian quantum systems. The case of a purely Hamiltonian coupling between the principal and auxiliary systems as a closed system without coupling to white noises is included as a special case. The results are expected to be of interest for (open-loop and feedback) control of continuous-time non-Markovian systems and studying reduced models for numerical simulation of such systems. They may also shed more light on the general structure of continuous-time non-Markovian quantum systems.

Fermionic stochastic Schrödinger equation and master equation: An open-system model

Xinyu Zhao, Wufu Shi, Lian-Ao Wu +1 more

This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermionic bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schr\"odinger equation (SSE), called the fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced density operator for the open system can be recovered from the stochastic average of the solutions to the QSD equation over the Grassmann-type noise. By employing the exact fermionic QSD equation, we can derive the corresponding exact master equation. The power of our approach is illustrated by the applications of our stochastic approach to several models of interest including the one-qubit dissipative model, the coupled two-qubit dissipative model, the quantum Brownian motion model, and the $N$-fermion model coupled to a fermionic bath. Different effects caused by the fermionic and bosonic baths on the dynamics of open systems are also discussed.
